ARC Raiders is at its best when a scavenging run turns into a hard choice: leave with what you have, or risk it all for one more objective. Its mix of hostile machines, unpredictable rival Raiders, and a vivid post-apocalyptic world makes for tense, memorable encounters. But the same extraction stakes can make losses sting, and solo queue does not mean an offline campaign. The Frozen Trail 2.0 update, live October 8, 2026, adds a substantial map, gear, and progression refresh—alongside known bugs Embark says are still being addressed.
What kind of game is ARC Raiders?
ARC Raiders is an online multiplayer extraction adventure from Embark Studios. Raiders leave the underground settlement of Speranza to search a machine-threatened future Earth for resources, loot, and quest objectives, then try to make it back out. You can craft and repair equipment between runs; once topside, every additional detour can improve your haul or put it at risk. Embark’s official site describes the premise and links to the game’s platforms.
The danger comes from both the ARC machines and other players. Combat and noise can draw attention, while a rival Raider may decide to fight—or try to take what you leave behind. This creates the game’s defining uncertainty: a run can become a fight against machines, an uneasy encounter with another player, or both. PC Gamer’s October 2025 review praised that balance, describing ARC Raiders as comparatively accessible for players intimidated by Escape from Tarkov’s learning curve and noting that its machines can be as threatening as human opponents. That is the reviewer’s judgment, not a guarantee that every player will find the genre easy.
How a run works—and why extraction matters
- Prepare in Speranza. Choose equipment, repair or craft what you need, and select a quest or scavenging goal.
- Search topside. Gather resources and loot while navigating ARC enemies, map conditions, and other Raiders.
- Decide whether to stay. More time can mean more loot or progress, but it also means more chances to be caught by a machine or another player.
- Reach extraction. Getting out secures the run’s payoff; failing to extract puts what you carried at risk.
That loop rewards alertness and judgment more than simply winning every fight. An early extraction can be the sensible choice if your bag is valuable or your resources are running low; staying makes sense when the potential reward is worth the added exposure. There is no universally correct risk threshold: it depends on what you brought, what you have found, and how much uncertainty you enjoy.

Can you play ARC Raiders solo?
Yes. You can queue solo or play in a party of up to three, according to the official site and the PlayStation listing. Solo means going in without your own squad; it does not turn the game into a single-player campaign. PlayStation identifies it as multiplayer-only, and the game remains online.
- Solo: You rely on your own awareness and decisions, without teammates to help in a fight or share the workload.
- Duo or trio: A party can coordinate and communicate, but it still faces the same machine and player threats.
If you want a quiet, offline campaign or PvE-only experience, ARC Raiders is not established as that kind of game. Embark supports social play across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, according to its official site. The current official information cited here does not establish a permanent PvE-only matchmaking mode.

What Frozen Trail 2.0 adds
Embark says Frozen Trail went live on October 8, 2026, and calls it the largest update since launch. Its additions affect the places players explore, how they move and fight, and how they progress:
- New environment and conditions: Pendola Pass, plus the Frigate and Redirection map conditions.
- New threats and weapons: Bully, Skulker, and Hydra enemies; Bantam and Stiletto weapons; and amplified weapons.
- Traversal and utility: a Grappling Hook, cameras, Tether Launcher, and Yank Grenade.
- Progression and home base: a revamped skill tree, an Outpost and Research Bench, craftable furniture, and 22 new quests.
- Pass system: a new Frozen Trail Reward Pass with free and premium tracks. Earlier Raider Decks move into a Legacy Pass.
The Frozen Trail 2.0 patch notes say players can choose which pass to progress, but only one pass can be active at a time. In those notes, the ARC Raiders Team explained the skill-tree redesign: “We’ve heard the comments (and seen in the data) that the Skill Tree was not living up to its role in offering sufficiently interesting ways of building your character to better define and refine your playstyle.”

The new traversal tools are promising, but not friction-free
In a three-hour hands-on with Frozen Trail on October 7, 2026, PC Gamer found the Grappling Hook exciting and capable of expanding movement, but also reported awkward rope interactions and some trial and error. The preview did not thoroughly test the Tether Launcher or Yank Grenade, so it does not establish how those tools perform across the update.
Known issues are part of the launch picture
Embark’s day-one patch notes list issues including invisible weapon meshes, an option to repair the Tether Launcher, occasional invisible lobbies, Hydra detection through walls in one area, and other quest, Outpost, audio, UI, and map bugs. The notes say some fixes are in progress. Treat Frozen Trail as a live update that is still being tuned, rather than assuming every new feature is already working smoothly.

Does ARC Raiders suit you?
- It may suit you if you enjoy tense scavenging, readable third-person action, dangerous PvE enemies, and the uncertainty of meeting other players. The possibility of an uneasy truce or a sudden fight gives ordinary resource runs room to become stories.
- It may frustrate you if you want a low-pressure solo campaign, dislike losing the value of a risky run, or prefer opponents and outcomes that are fully predictable.
- Its accessibility is relative. PC Gamer’s October 2025 review considered it easier to approach than Escape from Tarkov, but it remains an extraction game built around risk, online opponents, and the possibility that a run goes badly.
The game’s launch drew a large audience, but historical and live numbers should not be conflated. Nexon reported 4 million copies sold and more than 700,000 concurrent players across all platforms in its Q3 2025 earnings letter; those are post-launch results for that reporting period, not current 2026 player counts. Steam’s snapshot accessed October 8, 2026 showed 81% positive from 200,372 English user reviews overall, and 60% positive from 3,073 recent reviews. Those are changeable user-review signals, not critic scores or a cross-platform player count.

Steam describes online PvP, online co-op, cross-platform multiplayer, and in-game chat. Its listing also discloses kernel-level anti-cheat. That disclosure does not, by itself, establish a particular security outcome.
Is ARC Raiders free to play right now?
Embark’s October 8, 2026 announcement stated that free play runs October 8–12, 2026, and that the game was 50% off on all platforms at announcement time. Those are dated, temporary offers, not an ongoing free-to-play model or a guaranteed current price. The announcement also noted a €0.25 fee exception for PS5 in Germany during the free-play period. Check the relevant store for the current end time and local price before deciding to buy.
For PS5 players planning to use voice chat, PlayStation’s ARC Raiders page features the PULSE Elite wireless headset. A headset is optional, not a requirement, and that listing is not a recommendation for other platforms.
