ARC Raiders is an extraction shooter with a wider on-ramp than its punishing reputation might suggest: you can explore, scavenge, craft, and fight machines, and you can queue solo or with friends. But it is not a safe PvE adventure. Other Raiders share the world, and a quiet run can become a player-versus-player fight—especially when you try to extract.
What kind of game is ARC Raiders?
ARC Raiders is a multiplayer PvPvE extraction adventure. In the underground hub, players prepare, craft, or repair gear; topside, they scavenge resources, face mechanized ARC enemies, and decide whether to risk staying longer for more loot or leave with what they have. Extraction is the point at which a successful run becomes a successful return. The official site describes it as “a multiplayer extraction adventure, set in a lethal future earth, ravaged by a mysterious mechanized threat known as ARC.”

That loop puts two kinds of danger in the same match. ARC machines are a central combat threat, while other Raiders can disrupt a route, compete for resources, or attack before an extraction. PvP is not an optional edge case: Embark says the game evolved “from being co-op-only into the PvPvE Extraction Adventure game it is today,” in an Xbox Wire developer feature published September 22, 2025. The studio has described the tension and risk created by PvP as part of the game’s balance.
Is ARC Raiders approachable for newcomers?
It may be more forgiving than some extraction shooters, but approachable does not mean consequence-free. PC Gamer’s review describes progression as forgiving and notes that some solo matches can be peaceful, while also warning that extraction points are dangerous. Those are reviewer observations, not a promise about what any given match will be like.

The defining decision is whether to keep searching or leave. More time topside can mean more useful loot, but also more exposure to machines and other players. That risk makes the game more welcoming to players who want exploration and scavenging alongside combat than to players seeking a no-pressure collecting game. A run can be productive without turning into a firefight, but the possibility of one is part of the premise.
Can you play solo, and can you play with friends?
Yes. Steam lists solo play and parties of up to three. Solo is a way to enter the game without a party; it does not make the world PvE-only or remove uncertainty about other Raiders. The game’s official site lists PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms and cross-platform social play. That supports playing socially across platforms, but the cited information does not establish every matchmaking setting or promise cross-progression.
Who is ARC Raiders best suited to?

The useful comparison is not simply whether ARC Raiders is easier or harder. Consider what you want the genre’s tension to come from:

- Loss and progression: PC Gamer characterizes progression as forgiving, which may lower the barrier for newcomers. That does not remove the tension of risking a run’s loot.
- Solo play: Solo entry is supported, but the available evidence does not establish that solo players are protected from squads or placed in guaranteed PvE matches.
- Atmosphere and sound: Critic excerpts collected by Metacritic praise the atmosphere and PvE elements. The same reception is not uniformly positive: concerns include AI voice, weapon balance, and longevity.
- Ongoing support: This is a live-service game, so maps, balance, anti-cheat measures, and the quality of updates can affect its appeal over time. An announced update or event date is not evidence by itself of how well the game will be supported long term.
What do player reviews and launch figures say?
Steam’s English-language review snapshot, accessed October 4, 2026, showed 81% Very Positive from 199,991 reviews overall and 53% Mixed from 2,548 recent reviews. These are changing storefront figures, not permanent scores. The contrast suggests that the reception at that access point was more favorable across the full review history than in the recent sample; it does not explain why individual players changed their ratings.

Nexon’s Q3 2025 earnings letter reported 4 million copies sold and more than 700,000 concurrent players across platforms during the launch period. Those are historical launch-period figures, not a measure of current activity. On the ongoing challenge of keeping matches fair, executive producer Aleksander Grøndal told GamesRadar, “Video game cheating is a multi-billion dollar industry, and it will never fully go away.” GamesRadar also reported Embark’s claim that queue teaming by known offenders fell 85% within five days after they were separated in matchmaking. That percentage is a developer-reported result, not an independent measurement or a guarantee that cheating has been eliminated.

ARC Raiders makes the extraction formula easier to approach for some players by combining exploration, machine combat, crafting, and solo play with progression PC Gamer describes as forgiving. Its appeal depends on accepting the catch: another Raider can turn a routine scavenging trip or an extraction attempt into a fight. If that uncertainty is the exciting part of an extraction shooter, the blend has a clear case. If you want predictable matches or a guaranteed PvE-only experience, this is not the game’s promise.

The game is live-service, and its value can change with updates and events. The official site listed Frozen Trail for October 8, 2026, alongside a free trial running October 8–12, 2026; GamesRadar also reported on the trial. Those dates are imminent as of October 7, 2026, so check the official site for current availability before making plans.
