Usually, no. Arcane does not act as a universal multiplier for fire damage in Elden Ring. Arcane raises attack power or status buildup only when the specific weapon, affinity, skill, or casting tool gives Arcane a scaling role. A Fire-affinity weapon generally points you toward Strength, Flame Art points toward Faith, and a fire incantation uses the seal’s Incantation Scaling.
The reliable answer is therefore weapon- or spell-specific: open the equipment screen, identify the damage source, and read its displayed scaling instead of assuming that the word “fire” determines the governing attribute.

The short answer: Arcane is not a general fire-damage stat
Arcane is an attribute with several distinct effects, not an elemental-damage switch. It can increase a weapon’s attack power when that weapon has Arcane scaling, and it commonly supports Blood, Poison, and Occult affinities. It also contributes to status buildup where the relevant weapon or tool grants Arcane scaling.
That does not mean every attack that displays fire damage receives an Arcane bonus. Fire damage can come from a Fire-affinity weapon, a Flame Art weapon, a weapon skill, an incantation, or a buff. Those sources use different scaling rules. The visible element is only one part of the calculation.

How Elden Ring determines weapon damage
A weapon’s attribute letters are a quick guide to its scaling, but they are not precise formulas. The actual contribution depends on the weapon, its affinity, the upgrade level, and the exact scaling values behind the displayed grades. Two weapons with the same letter can therefore gain different amounts from the same attribute.
For a normal weapon hit, inspect the attack-power rows on the equipment screen. Physical, fire, lightning, magic, sacred, and other damage components can each be affected by different scaling. If Arcane is absent from the weapon’s attribute-scaling section, investing in Arcane does not create a hidden fire bonus. If Arcane is listed, it can contribute to the weapon’s attack power according to that weapon’s own value.
What the scaling letters tell you
- The letter is comparative, not a percentage. A higher grade usually indicates stronger scaling, but the grade does not disclose the exact coefficient.
- Scaling is affinity-dependent. Applying an Ash of War can change which attributes govern the weapon and how much physical or elemental damage it deals.
- Upgrade level matters. A weapon’s scaling can improve as it is upgraded, so compare weapons at the upgrade levels you actually intend to use.
- Elemental appearance is not enough. A fire animation or fire damage row does not identify the governing attribute by itself.
Fire affinity versus Flame Art
Fire and Flame Art are separate affinities. Treating them as interchangeable is the most common reason players expect Arcane to increase their fire damage.

A Fire-affinity infusion is generally the Strength-oriented choice among these examples. Flame Art is the Faith-oriented alternative. Arcane is associated with Occult, Blood, and Poison rather than being a universal requirement for either fire affinity.
Why the distinction matters for builds
Suppose two characters use the same sword: one invests heavily in Strength and the other in Faith. A Fire infusion can favor the Strength character, while Flame Art can favor the Faith character. Moving points into Arcane will not automatically outperform either setup unless the weapon has meaningful Arcane scaling or the build is using an Arcane-oriented affinity.
The correct comparison is the weapon’s total attack power at the intended attributes, not the name of the element. Change the affinity, enter the attributes you plan to use, and compare the displayed physical and elemental totals.

Does Arcane help a fire incantation?
Fire incantations are cast through a sacred seal. Their effectiveness is governed by the seal’s Incantation Scaling and by the particular incantation’s rules, not by a blanket “fire uses Arcane” principle.

To evaluate a fire incantation, identify the seal in your casting hand and read its Incantation Scaling at your current attributes. A seal may scale from Faith alone or from a hybrid of Faith and another attribute. The hybrid scaling does not mean every spell component uses every listed attribute in the same way.
The Faith-only caveat for healing and weapon buffs
For healing and weapon-buff incantations, only the Faith portion of a hybrid seal’s scaling counts. In practical terms, an Arcane-scaling portion of a hybrid seal should not be treated as a direct increase to the fire damage supplied by a weapon-buff incantation. Check the seal and the incantation category before spending levels for this purpose.
This is why a seal that looks attractive for an Arcane build may not be the best choice for a fire weapon buff. The displayed seal scaling and the spell’s type must agree with the result you want.
Weapon skills can follow their own rules
A weapon skill is not necessarily calculated like a normal light or heavy attack. Skills can use their own scaling behavior, and the relevant attribute may depend on the skill, the weapon, and the affinity. A skill that produces flames can therefore behave differently from the weapon’s ordinary fire damage.
When testing a skill, separate three questions:
- What affinity is currently applied to the weapon?
- What attributes does the skill specify or appear to use according to its mechanics?
- Is the damage coming from the weapon hit, the skill’s projectile or effect, or both?
Do not infer the answer solely from the visual effect. Read the weapon’s current scaling, then treat the skill as a separate damage source when the game or a trusted mechanics reference identifies separate behavior.
How to check your own weapon or spell
Use this procedure before respecing or changing an infusion:
- Open the equipment screen. Select the weapon and expand its detailed attack-power and attribute-scaling information.
- Record the affinity. Note whether the weapon is set to Fire, Flame Art, Occult, Blood, Poison, or another option.
- Look for Arcane scaling. If Arcane is not listed, do not expect Arcane investment to add weapon attack power. If it is listed, its contribution is weapon-specific.
- Compare the relevant attribute. For Fire, compare Strength; for Flame Art, compare Faith; for an Arcane-oriented affinity, compare Arcane. Use the actual totals shown at your target attributes.
- Identify the damage source. A normal hit, a skill, an incantation, and a weapon buff can use different calculations.
- For incantations, inspect the seal. Check the seal’s Incantation Scaling and remember the Faith-only rule for healing and weapon-buff incantations.
- Compare in the mode you play. PvE and PvP can produce different results, so do not treat a PvP observation as a universal PvE formula.
Patch history and why old Arcane advice can mislead
Patch notes explain why older forum posts sometimes conflict with current equipment-screen behavior.
Version 1.03
Bandai Namco’s Version 1.03 notes documented a fix for a bug that caused Arcane to scale incorrectly for some weapons. That is evidence of a historical bug, not evidence that Arcane generally boosts fire damage. A post written around that bug should not be used as a universal rule for modern builds.
Version 1.09
The official Version 1.09 notes, published in March 2023, said that attribute scaling was increased for weapons infused with Magic, Fire, Flame Art, Lightning, and Sacred affinities. The change applies through the affected infusion and weapon, so it does not turn Arcane into a general fire attribute. Check the current weapon’s displayed values rather than applying the patch note as a fixed percentage to every weapon.
Version 1.07 and PvP
Version 1.07 established separate PvP damage scaling. A build that appears stronger or weaker in an invasion or duel may therefore not behave identically against enemies in PvE. Keep PvP comparisons separate from general advice about weapon and spell scaling.
Version 1.16.1
A later official update, Version 1.16.1, addressed cases in which incorrect affinities or status ailments were applied to some weapons. That fix concerns affinity or status application; it does not establish a new rule that Arcane increases fire damage.

They are different affinities with different usual attribute associations. Compare Strength-oriented Fire against Faith-oriented Flame Art for your actual build.
“My hybrid seal lists Arcane, so every buff gets Arcane scaling”
For healing and weapon-buff incantations, only the Faith portion of hybrid-seal scaling counts. Do not assume the Arcane portion raises a buff’s fire damage.
“The skill animation proves the scaling”
Visual effects do not disclose the full formula. Check the skill’s behavior and test the weapon or spell in the relevant mode.
“A letter grade is an exact damage multiplier”
Grades are broad indicators. Exact scaling varies by weapon and upgrade level, so use displayed attack power for the final comparison.
Choosing between Strength, Faith, and Arcane

If two options are close, choose the one that also supports your secondary goals: status buildup, physical damage, stamina costs, spell access, or the attributes required by your preferred weapon. There is no universal “fire build” attribute independent of the source of the damage.

- Arcane is not a universal fire-damage stat.
- Arcane contributes when the specific weapon, affinity, skill, or tool gives it a scaling role.
- Fire affinity is associated with Strength, while Flame Art is associated with Faith.
- Fire incantations use the casting seal’s Incantation Scaling.
- Healing and weapon-buff incantations use only the Faith portion of a hybrid seal’s scaling.
- Patch history includes Arcane bug fixes, affinity-scaling adjustments, separate PvP scaling, and later affinity/status corrections; none changes the basic rule that you must inspect the individual weapon or spell.
For a particular build, the most defensible method is to compare the weapon’s displayed attack power and scaling at your intended attributes, then evaluate the exact skill, incantation, or buff in the mode where you will use it. No general Arcane-to-fire conversion exists.
