AI-generated game mods are not automatically dangerous, but AI authorship is not a safety check. Judge the specific file and release: use the official project page, review its scan status and recent history, confirm its requirements and game version, and stop if it asks for credentials or behaves in an unexplained way. Platform screening can reduce risk, but no badge guarantees a file is harmless.
Can an AI-made mod contain a virus?
Yes. A mod made with AI tools can contain malicious code, just as a human-made mod can. There is no reliable comparative statistic showing that AI-generated mods are more or less likely to contain malware than human-made ones, so the label alone cannot establish safety.
Separate four questions when assessing a mod: whether the file is malicious, whether it works with your game and dependencies, whether AI use is disclosed, and whether the creator has rights to the content. A mod can pass one check and fail another.
How to check a mod before installing it
-
Start at the official project page
Find the mod on the platform’s official project page rather than an unfamiliar mirror or re-upload. Check that the description explains what the mod changes, which files it provides, how to install it, and any caveats or requirements. Nexus Mods’ submission rules require files to work as described and caveats and requirements to be presented; CurseForge’s guidelines likewise call for descriptions of functional changes and compliance with the game developer’s EULA and terms. Read the current scan status, not just the platform name
Nexus Mods says uploaded content goes through multiple security checks and a virus scan before release. Its indicators distinguish files that passed internal checks and a VirusTotal scan (green), passed internal checks but could not be scanned by VirusTotal (blue), and files that have not been scanned (white, often older files). A pending scan is not a completed result. A failed or flagged scan calls for review; Nexus notes that a flag does not automatically mean a file is malicious and that false positives occur. Consider the badge alongside downloads, endorsements, and the author’s and project’s history. Nexus Mods file virus scanning.
-
Check the author and release history
Look for a credible history of updates and support, and read recent comments or reports for signs of unexplained changes or problems. A large download count or endorsement total is only context, not proof that the particular release is safe. Nexus Mods itself recommends weighing scan status with indicators such as downloads, endorsements, and account or project history. Nexus Mods file virus scanning.

Confirm the game version and dependencies
Match the mod’s stated target version to the game you actually run, and verify required mods, loaders, and installation steps. A clean file can still cause crashes, conflicts, or save problems if it targets another version or depends on incompatible components. Platform descriptions can help you check requirements, but there is no universal compatibility guarantee.
-
Inspect what the download asks you to do
Pause if the mod unexpectedly includes an executable, requests game or account credentials, requires disabling antivirus, or wants network access with no clear reason. Nexus Mods restricts executables that communicate with the internet unless that behavior is crucial to the mod or utility. Its scanning guidance also explains that self-extracting files may be blocked, nested archives can hinder scanning, and password-protected archives cannot be scanned before release. Do not bypass a warning just to proceed. Nexus Mods submission rules; Nexus Mods file virus scanning.

What scan badges and moderation can—and cannot—tell you
Screening is useful, but it is not a promise of zero risk. CurseForge describes automated checks and manual review, while noting that whitelisted projects skip manual review for some releases even though automated technical checks still run. Its eligibility criteria include five clean recent file clusters, at least one file updated within 90 days, and more than 1,000 total downloads. Those criteria describe CurseForge’s whitelisting process, not a guarantee that a project or every future file is harmless. CurseForge whitelisting.
CurseForge also documented a malware incident in June 2023 in which malicious accounts uploaded malware, demonstrating that moderation systems can miss harmful uploads. The incident page provides detection and remediation guidance, but its project-specific counts are not estimates of how often mods are malicious. CurseForge malware incident.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.AI disclosure and rights are separate from malware safety
A scan cannot tell you whether a mod’s assets were made with AI, whether the creator had permission to use source material, or whether the mod meets a platform’s disclosure rules. Nexus Mods’ April 27, 2023 post said AI-generated mod content was not against its rules at that time, while noting that content could be removed after a credible complaint from an affected creator or rights holder. That was a dated statement, not a universal or current policy for every platform. Nexus Mods’ current guidelines describe separate AI-Generated Content, AI Media, and AI Assisted tags.
