You can build a Steam review dashboard by collecting an app’s public reviews through Steam’s documented review interfaces, paging through results with a cursor, and calculating views from the returned review fields. The key design rule is to show the active filters and date range beside every count: the figures describe the selected review population, not necessarily every review for the app.
Choose a Steam review interface
Steam documents two ways to retrieve an app’s user reviews: the legacy GET store.steampowered.com/appreviews/<appid>?json=1 endpoint and the newer IUserReviewsService.GetAppReviews method, which Steamworks says replaces the legacy endpoint. The legacy endpoint is useful for a simple implementation; the service is the documented successor.
Both interfaces return review data in pages. The response can include a query summary, a cursor for the next page, and individual review records. The newer service does not require a key, but calls without a key associated with the app share a lower rate limit and may receive HTTP 429 responses. Anonymous responses may also be cached for up to 10 minutes. Plan for those conditions rather than treating each request as guaranteed to return fresh data immediately. Steamworks: User Reviews
Decide what reviews the dashboard includes
Before collecting data, define the review population your dashboard is intended to describe. Steam’s documented parameters let you choose a review filter (recent, updated, or all), language, review type, purchase type, and page size. The service reference also documents filters for playtime bounds, Steam Deck use, and hardware or operating-system characteristics.

On the legacy endpoint, off-topic activity is excluded by default. The parameter filter_offtopic_activity=0 includes it. If your dashboard makes this option available, display its setting with the results; changing it changes which reviews are represented. Steamworks: User Reviews
- Show the selected language, review filter, purchase type, and date range near the displayed totals.
- Make any playtime, device, operating-system, or off-topic setting visible when it is used.
- Do not present a filtered count as an unqualified total for the app.
Fetch reviews with cursor pagination
Request a page, retain the cursor returned by Steam, and use it to request the next page. Steam advises using recent or updated when paging until the response list is empty. The helpfulness-oriented all mode uses sliding windows and always returns results, so it is not the documented choice for reaching an empty terminal page. recentorupdatedfor a traversal intended to end at an empty page. - Request the first page. Use the legacy appreviews endpoint or
IUserReviewsService.GetAppReviews. Save the query summary if present, along with the returned review records and cursor. - Request subsequent pages. Pass the returned cursor as the next-page cursor, URL-encoding it where required. Continue using the same query settings.
- Stop when the response contains no reviews. Do not use the sliding-window behavior of
allas an empty-page completion signal. - Handle throttling and freshness. If a request receives HTTP 429, avoid assuming the data is complete; retry according to your collection schedule. For anonymous service calls, account for the documented possibility of caching for up to 10 minutes.
Keep the query settings associated with the collected pages. Otherwise, a later dashboard view may combine records gathered under different filters or make it impossible to explain why a total changed.
Build dashboard metrics from the returned data
The query summary can include a review score and description, plus positive, negative, and total review counts. Individual records can include recommendation sentiment, review text, creation and update timestamps, helpful and funny votes, comment count, purchase or free-copy indicators, Early Access status, Steam Deck use, developer response, and author playtime. The service reference additionally documents refunded status and hardware or operating-system characteristics.

These fields support several practical views. They are dashboard design options, not layouts prescribed by Steam.
- Sentiment and volume: Show positive and negative review counts alongside the total and review score supplied in the query summary. Trend review records by creation date; use update timestamps for a separate view of edited reviews.
- Review trends over time: Group collected records into a chosen time interval and display the date window and query filters. A trend is only comparable when the underlying filters and collection scope are consistent.
- Language and purchase type: Break down returned reviews by language and purchase or free-copy indicators. Make clear whether the query itself was limited to a particular language or purchase type.
- Helpfulness: Summarize helpful and funny votes or comment counts to identify reviews attracting reader interaction. These engagement fields are distinct from whether the review is positive.
- Cohorts and context: Compare reviews by Early Access status, Steam Deck usage, playtime, or documented hardware and operating-system fields when those dimensions are relevant.
- Developer response activity: Track whether a review has a developer response and, where useful, examine response records alongside review dates.
Keep counts and comparisons interpretable
Steam’s query parameters change which reviews are returned, and the summary counts belong to the query being made. A language restriction, date window, purchase filter, or off-topic setting can therefore produce totals that differ from a less restricted query. Put the selected range and filters next to each total, and avoid comparing two slices as though their populations were identical when their settings differ.

Counts such as total_positive, total_negative, and total_reviews are app-specific, dynamic query results—not fixed general statistics. If the dashboard displays the API’s summary, identify the query context and when the data was collected so readers can distinguish a current result from a historical snapshot.
Account for limits beyond the API schema
Public access to review data does not by itself establish what storage, retention, or redistribution of review text and author-related fields is permitted. The Steamworks API documentation describes the interfaces and fields; it does not settle those separate obligations. Check the applicable Steam terms and privacy requirements before deciding how the dashboard stores or republishes those fields.
