Some Baldur’s Gate 3 players found companion romances too quick to start, and Larian acknowledged a launch-era bug that made certain approval thresholds too low. That explains some premature advances—especially Gale’s—but it does not prove that every complaint about the game’s flirtatious tone came from a bug. “Overly horny” is a subjective judgment, and the available coverage does not establish how many players shared it.
What players were reacting to
The phrase “overly horny” can describe different things: companions seeming to flirt too soon, the amount or framing of flirtatious content, or the fact that romance is broadly available. Those are related reactions, but they are not the same claim. One Reddit complaint quoted in GameSpot called the romance “SO obnoxious”; it is an example of a player’s view, not evidence of a majority opinion.
GameSpot’s September 5, 2023 report framed the complaint as characters seeming eager to “jump your bones.” The report cited an individual Reddit post, not a representative survey or a count of players who experienced unwanted advances. There is no supported statistic here for how common the reaction was.
What Larian said about the early advances
In a launch-era interview, Larian game director Swen Vincke said approval thresholds were too low when Baldur’s Gate 3 shipped, causing some romance advances to arrive earlier than intended. GameSpot reported that he singled out Gale as especially affected and said some fixes had already landed while others were still underway at the time.

That statement is a historical explanation of launch behavior, not confirmation of how every romance route behaves in the current build. It also addresses timing—not whether players might still find the broader romance tone too forward.
What the developers intended romance to feel like
Asked in a 2023 Gamepressure interview why the setting felt horny, Vincke said: “We wanted to do romance for the companions, but it wasn’t intended to be horny, it was intended to be mature.” He added that the breadth of player interest in the characters and romance options exceeded expectations.

Lead writer Adam Smith described relationship arcs with different starting points: “sometimes romance begins as a fling and then develops into something much stronger and much more powerful,” while other relationships start “very tentative” and grow. That describes the intended variety; it does not mean every player will experience the pacing or tone the same way.

No. The low-threshold bug helps explain why some players encountered advances earlier than intended at launch. It cannot settle a broader disagreement about how frequently flirtation appears, how clearly dialogue choices signal romantic intent, or how readily players can decline romance. The cited coverage documents the bug and developer intent, but does not systematically measure those aspects across routes or establish which complaints remain applicable today.
