Use both, in sequence. Start with critic reviews for a structured assessment of a game’s design, writing, performance and overall execution. Then read recent player reviews to check the shipped build, bugs, value, accessibility, community and platform-specific fit. If the scores disagree, investigate the reasons instead of averaging the numbers.
What each type of score actually measures
A score is not a universal measurement of a game’s quality. It is a compressed answer to a particular question, produced by a particular group of people, on a particular platform and date.

Critic scores
A critic aggregate such as Metacritic’s Metascore combines ratings from selected professional publications. Critics usually assess the game as a complete creative work: systems, level design, pacing, writing, art direction, sound, controls and technical performance. Their reviews often explain how those parts interact and whether the game achieves its stated aims.

That consistency has limits. A critic’s review is normally based on a review copy, a limited time window and one platform or configuration. A launch-day build may differ from the version that was reviewed, and a critic’s priorities may not match yours. A reviewer who values innovation may be less concerned about a game’s grind; another who focuses on narrative may give less space to accessibility or long-term multiplayer health.
Player reviews
Player scores summarize recommendations from people who bought or played the game under a store or aggregator’s rules. The written comments reveal lived experience: crashes, frame-rate problems, matchmaking, queue times, monetization, controller support, accessibility options, value for money and whether the community is welcoming.
Players also expose niche strengths that a general critic may overlook. A specialist audience can identify how well a simulation models a hobby, whether a strategy game supports unusual play styles or whether an online title remains enjoyable after dozens of hours. Those observations are highly relevant when you share the reviewer’s platform, genre interests or tolerance for repetition.

The trade-off is noise. User pools are self-selected, scores can become polarized, and short-term events can dominate the rating. A price change, controversial update, server outage or organized review campaign may push the average up or down without describing the game’s normal state.

Critics versus players at a glance
| Question | Critic evidence | Player evidence |
|---|---|---|
| When is it available? | Often before release or immediately at launch | Mostly after purchase and play, with volume building over time |
| Who contributes? | A selected set of professional outlets | A much larger, self-selected pool on a store or aggregator |
| What is emphasized? | Design, writing, presentation, structure and overall execution | Technical condition, value, practical fit, community and long-term use |
| What can distort the result? | Review deadlines, access conditions, editorial taste and platform differences | Selection bias, brigading, review bombing, temporary events and polarized expectations |
| Best use for a buyer | Establish whether the underlying game is well made and suits your interests | Verify the current experience on your platform and in your intended audience |
Which score matters at each point in a game’s life
| Buying stage | Give more weight to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Before release | Critics | How many outlets contributed, whether they reviewed the same edition, and the recurring strengths and weaknesses in full reviews |
| Launch day | A combination | Critic analysis for broad quality; current player comments for crashes, performance, monetization, accessibility and whether the shipped build matches expectations |
| Weeks or months later | Recent players | Patch history, server health, matchmaking, active community, value after updates and the date attached to each complaint |
| After a major expansion or overhaul | Recent evidence from both groups | Whether the update changes the systems, performance or business model described in older reviews |
Before release, player evidence is absent or too small to establish a pattern, so critics carry more of the initial burden. At launch, combine the two streams: critics explain the design while players report the condition of the build people can actually buy. Later, current player comments become more informative about patches, servers and community conditions, while the critic reviews remain useful context for the game’s intended design.
Why critics and players can rate the same game very differently
Different goals and tastes
A critic may praise a demanding combat system, sparse storytelling or a ten-hour campaign. Players seeking a relaxed game, a long role-playing adventure or a cooperative experience may react negatively even when the review is positive. Conversely, a game with familiar mechanics can earn modest critic scores while a dedicated community values its depth and replayability.
Platform, edition and hardware
Performance is not a single property of a title. The console version, PC build and handheld edition can have different frame rates, loading times, control options and bugs. Deluxe editions may include content or pricing that changes the value calculation. When scores diverge, confirm that both reviewers discuss the same platform and edition.
Review date and patches
Online games and live-service products can change substantially after launch. A critic’s early review may describe an attractive design before server congestion appears. A player review written during an outage may accurately describe that week while saying little about the game after a fix. Treat the date as part of the evidence, not as decoration.

Small samples and unusual events
A handful of early reviews can swing an average dramatically. A score built from thousands of comments is more stable, but it can still reflect a temporary event. Read the newest and oldest entries separately to see whether the same issue persists.
Review bombing and coordinated activity
Organized campaigns can overwhelm an otherwise ordinary rating. An arXiv study of more than 50,000 Metacritic PC user-score aggregations reported 0.88 validation accuracy for a classifier distinguishing review bombing from ordinary low ratings. That result supports checking for manipulation signals; it does not prove that every low score is artificial or that a high score is reliable.
What larger studies suggest about the two signals
Evidence does not establish that one group is universally more accurate for every buyer. It does show that the signals behave differently.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- A 2025 Journal of Business Research study covering 1,642 video games found nonlinear relationships between review valence and sales. The sales effect of increasing user-review valence diminished at high levels, while the effect of increasing critic-review valence grew. In practical terms, moving from mediocre to good user sentiment may matter more than moving from very good to exceptional, whereas stronger critic sentiment continued to show a larger association at the high end.
- A 2023 ScienceDirect platform-level analysis covering 2002–2022 found that critic and ordinary-gamer assessments can diverge, with the pattern differing by platform. A score transfer from one platform to another is therefore not a safe assumption.
- The 2025 sales paper notes that both user and critic reviews are key factors in video-game success while their relative importance remains unclear. Sales impact is not the same as usefulness for an individual purchase decision.
These findings argue for triangulation. A high critic score can indicate strong execution without guaranteeing a smooth launch. A positive player score can confirm a healthy community without proving that the game’s design is ambitious or coherent.

A step-by-step method for making a buying decision
- Define your non-negotiables. Write down the platform, preferred genre, solo or multiplayer requirement, accessibility needs, budget, tolerance for bugs and the amount of time you expect to play. This prevents a general score from overruling a requirement that is essential to you.
- Establish the critic baseline. Look at the aggregate only as a starting point. Check the number of contributing outlets and read several full reviews, including one that praises the game and one that identifies substantial weaknesses.
- Extract recurring reasons. Note repeated comments about controls, pacing, writing, difficulty, progression, graphics, sound and performance. A cluster of specific observations is more useful than a one-point difference between averages.
- Check current player evidence. Sort or filter for recent reviews, then read both positive and negative examples. Look for concrete reports about crashes, frame rates, queues, matchmaking, save files, controller support, accessibility and monetization.
- Match the evidence to your platform. Give priority to comments from the same operating system, console family, storefront and edition you will use. Do not treat a problem reported only on another platform as proof that your version has it.
- Investigate sharp disagreement. Compare review dates, patch versions, sample size, region, edition and recurring reasons. Decide whether the gap reflects taste, technical trouble, a changed game, audience mismatch or coordinated activity.
- Make a conditional choice. Buy now when the strengths match your priorities and the current problems are acceptable. Wait for a patch, sale or more player evidence when the main concern is unresolved technical condition or uncertain value.
How to read an aggregate without being misled
Do not treat a decimal as precision
An 8.1 and an 8.3 do not represent a meaningful universal difference. Publications use different scales and standards, and an aggregate compresses detailed judgments into one figure. Use score bands to find candidates, then read the reasoning.
Separate average sentiment from distribution
Two games can share the same average while one has broad agreement and the other has sharply divided opinions. Look for the spread between enthusiastic and negative reviews. Polarization may indicate a demanding design, a narrow audience, a technical split between platforms or an unresolved controversy.
Prefer specific, dated comments
“Runs badly” is less actionable than a dated report identifying a graphics card, console model, patch and reproducible symptom. Likewise, “not worth it” becomes useful only when the writer explains the price, playtime, missing features or monetization that shaped the judgment.

Questions to ask when the scores disagree
- Are the critic and player scores for the same platform, edition and region?
- Were the critic reviews written before a significant patch or server change?
- How large is each sample, and did the player score move suddenly?
- Do written reviews repeat one concrete problem or merely express opposing tastes?
- Are players evaluating the current game, an early-access build or a temporary event?
- Does the disagreement concern quality, value, technical stability or audience fit?
- Would the issue matter to your own priorities, hardware and play style?
Answering those questions turns a confusing gap into a decision. For example, high critic scores and low recent player scores may describe a well-designed game with an unstable launch. Low critic scores and positive players may describe a specialized or repetitive game that its target community finds compelling. Neither pattern automatically identifies a bad purchase.

Bottom line for different buyers
If you are buying before launch
Use critic coverage as your main evidence, but avoid treating an aggregate as a guarantee. Confirm that reviewers describe the mechanics and priorities you care about, and remember that launch performance and online population are not fully observable beforehand.
If you are buying at launch
Read critics for the game’s structure and players for the first real account of the shipped build. Give technical reports, accessibility findings and monetization details priority over small differences in headline scores.
If you are buying months later
Recent player reviews usually answer the most important question: what experience will you receive now? Use critic reviews to understand the foundation, then verify patches, server health, community activity and the current value proposition.
If you have a narrow taste or a strict requirement
Prioritize written reviews from people who share your platform and priorities. A score produced for a broad audience cannot substitute for evidence about a specific accessibility feature, control scheme, genre convention or cooperative setup.
The most trustworthy choice is therefore not “critics” or “players” in isolation. It is a dated, platform-matched reading of both, with the number used to locate evidence and the written reasons used to make the decision.
