Are Japanese Switch Games Playable in English? What to Check Before You Buy

A Japanese Switch game may work on your console without offering English. Check the exact release’s language support and match DLC to the game’s region.

Some Japanese Nintendo Switch games support English, and some do not. A Japanese game card can generally play on a non-Chinese-region Switch, but that does not guarantee English text or audio. Check the supported languages for the exact release you plan to buy; changing your console’s language only selects English when that game supports it.

Does a Japanese Switch game automatically include English?

No. Language support is set by the individual game and release, not by the console region. Nintendo says a game defaults to the console’s selected language only if the software supports that language. If English is not supported, changing the Switch system language will not add it. Nintendo’s language support guidance explains this behavior.

Do not assume that every edition sharing a title has the same languages. Confirm the specific edition’s listing, packaging, or in-game support information. If a publisher lists text and audio separately, check both: “English” in one category does not necessarily establish English support in the other.

Will a Japanese game card work on a US or other non-Japanese Switch?

In most cases, yes. Nintendo says Switch game cards are not region-locked, except for consoles and game cards distributed in the Chinese region. That is a compatibility rule, not a promise that every cross-region combination has been tested or will receive full service and support. See Nintendo’s Regional Compatibility FAQ.

In Japan-specific guidance, Nintendo says overseas packaged Switch games can operate on consoles sold in Japan, but it has not checked every title and cannot guarantee operation or after-sales service. It also cautions that Japanese eShop add-ons may not work with overseas versions. Nintendo Japan’s compatibility information describes those caveats.

How to check whether the exact release supports English

  1. Identify the release. Check the edition and release region, not just the game’s name. Physical and digital editions or releases for different regions may have different language information.
  2. Look up the official language list. Check the publisher’s listing or the relevant Nintendo store page for English. When available, verify text and audio separately.
  3. For a physical game card, check its information. Nintendo advises checking the packaging or opening the software’s menu and going to Software Information > Support Information for supported-region details. Language support still needs to be confirmed for the edition.
  4. Check add-ons before purchasing them. Match the DLC region to the base game’s release region; Nintendo says DLC works only with games released for the same region as the DLC.
  5. Check the eShop country if buying digitally. The eShop country follows the country setting on the Nintendo Account. Do not treat the console’s language setting as a substitute for checking the edition’s language support.

Examples: English support varies by game

Nintendo’s US store listing for Eastward includes American English among its supported languages. The listing for OSHIIRO lists both British and American English. These are examples of title-specific listings, not evidence that all Japanese releases include English.

Sumikko Gurashi Atsumare! Sumikkotown - Switch Japanese Ver.
  • The latest game series from the popular character Sumikko Gurashi is now available on Nintendo Switch
  • You can enjoy creating your own town with the fun of a box garden simulation and the cute Sumikko Gurashi characters
  • Create a welcoming town with a large field of view by building a variety of buildings such as homes and shops to create a sumikko gurashi city

Nintendo’s reviewed official listings do not establish what share of Japanese Switch games support English. Treat any general claim about “Japanese games” as too broad unless it is backed by the language list for the exact edition.
