MMO zone chat is conditionally safe, not automatically safe. A child’s risk depends on age, the game’s communication design, who can contact the child, and whether a parent has enabled the narrowest practical settings and practiced a response to uncomfortable messages. Public chat can expose children to strangers, harassment, inappropriate material, personal-information requests and pressure to move to another app. Controls, filtering and supervision reduce those risks, but none eliminates them.
What “zone chat” means and why it changes the risk
Zone chat is a shared text channel visible to players in the same area, world, server or match. Depending on the game, a child may also have access to direct messages, party or group chat, guild chat, voice chat, private servers, friend requests and invitations to follow or join another player. These channels do not have the same safety profile.

A scrolling public channel is visible to many people, but it can still expose a child to unknown adults, abusive language, sexual or violent material, scams and requests for personal information. A direct message, party channel, voice call or private server can create a more private interaction that is harder for a parent to notice. Evaluate every channel separately rather than treating “chat” as one setting.
- Public or zone text: strangers may see and address the child, and harmful messages may appear before moderation catches them.
- Direct and party messages: one-to-one or small-group contact can make manipulation easier to hide.
- Voice chat: tone, age and identity are difficult to verify, and conversations may move quickly.
- Private servers and creator-made features: access may be controlled differently from the platform’s main chat system.
The ESRB advises parents to check the individual game’s rating and features instead of assuming every online game works alike. An MMO label does not tell you who can contact a child, whether voice is enabled, or how blocking and reporting work.

When zone chat is not a good choice
For a young or inexperienced child
Start with chat disabled when a child is too young to recognize manipulation, cannot reliably keep personal information private, or is still learning how to leave an uncomfortable interaction. If the game requires communication for ordinary play, use the most restrictive option available, such as trusted friends or a similar-age group, rather than opening a public channel by default.
When the game cannot separate communication channels
Some games allow parents to disable text but leave voice, party invitations or direct messages active. Others put communication tools inside an individual game created by a developer, outside the platform’s central parental settings. If you cannot turn off the channels your child does not need, choose a different game or keep the child out of those features.
When a child is being pressured or targeted
Turn chat off temporarily if an account repeatedly asks questions, sends unwanted messages, insults the child, offers gifts in exchange for secrecy, or pushes the child toward another service. Preserve relevant evidence, then block and report the account and tell the platform or a trusted adult what happened.

An unknown player asking for a child’s age, school, town, address, phone number, photos, social-media handle or other contact details is crossing a safety boundary. So is a request to keep the conversation secret, switch to Discord or another app, join a private server, use voice or video, or meet offline. These requests can be made by another child, an adult pretending to be a child, or someone whose identity cannot be verified.
- Questions about identity, location, school, family or daily routine.
- Requests for photos, video, voice calls, passwords, payment details or account access.
- Pressure to move outside the agreed game environment.
- Promises of in-game currency, rare items or special status in return for secrecy or personal information.
- Sexual, hateful, threatening or extremely violent content.
- Repeated contact after the child says no, leaves a channel or blocks the account.
The Federal Trade Commission’s parent guidance gives children a simple response: “No thanks. I’d rather just keep playing the game.” The child should then stop replying and tell a parent or another trusted adult. The goal is not to win an argument with the stranger; it is to end access and get help.

What children should do when a message feels wrong
- Do not answer personal questions. Never share a real name, age, location, school, photos, contact details, passwords or identifying clues.
- Stay in the agreed game. Do not accept a request to continue on Discord, another messenger, social media, voice service or video call without a parent’s permission.
- Stop responding. The child does not need to explain, persuade or be polite to an uncomfortable stranger.
- Block the account. Use the game’s block, mute or privacy control so the account cannot continue contacting the child through that channel.
- Report the behavior. Report harassment, sexual content, threats, discriminatory speech, requests for personal information and attempts to move the conversation elsewhere.
- Tell a trusted adult. A parent needs to know even if the child already blocked the account. If there is a threat of immediate harm or an attempt to arrange an in-person meeting, seek appropriate emergency or law-enforcement help.
Practice this sequence before a problem occurs. A child who has rehearsed “stop, block, report, tell” is less likely to remain in a conversation out of embarrassment or curiosity.
How to configure an MMO for a child
1. Check the rating and communication design
Read the game’s age and content rating, then inspect its communication features. Confirm whether it includes text, voice, direct, party, guild, video, private-server or follow-and-join functions. Check whether each can be disabled separately and whether the setting applies to the specific game or only to the platform account.
2. Begin with the narrowest communication setting
For a young or inexperienced child, turn chat off. If communication is necessary, allow only trusted friends or a comparable age-restricted group when the game provides that option. Do not enable a broader channel merely because teammates use it.
3. Disable direct and voice contact unless there is a clear reason
Review direct messages, party invitations, voice chat and private-server access individually. A child may be able to play successfully without any of them. Also inspect who can follow the child, join the child’s server or invite the child into a group.
4. Set privacy, time and spending controls
Use the game’s privacy controls to limit friend requests and contact from unknown accounts. Set reasonable screen-time and spending limits, and review the child’s friends and recent interactions. Communication safety and financial safety overlap: a player who gains trust may later request gifts, account access or payment information.

5. Explain the rules in plain language
Tell the child exactly what must stay private, which channels are allowed, and when to ask for help. Make clear that blocking and reporting are not punishments and that the child will not lose game access for reporting an uncomfortable interaction.

Review settings after a game update, an account-age change, a move to a new device or a change of region. Updates can add communication features or change where controls appear. Check the individual game again if its creator adds a new chat system.
What platform controls can and cannot do
Roblox provides a useful example of the categories parents should look for. Its parental-controls documentation covers content maturity, chat and parties, spending, screen time, friends, blocking and privacy. Its Experience Chat is messaging between users playing the same game, with age checks, similar-age groupings and trusted-friend relationships shaping who can communicate.
Roblox says filtered chat is intended to block discriminatory speech, bullying, extremism, violence, sexual content, personal information and links. It also explicitly says that no system is perfect and encourages parents to continue talking with children about online safety. Filtering should therefore be treated as one layer, not as proof that every message is safe.
Roblox also notes that parental settings do not apply to chat features independently created by game creators. This is a critical limitation: a platform-level control may not govern every communication feature inside every experience. Parents must inspect the individual game’s controls and behavior.

How to compare two MMOs before allowing chat
Use the same checklist for each game. The safest choice is not necessarily the game with the most features; it is the one whose controls match your child’s age and your household rules.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
“The filter will catch everything”
Why it fails: Filters can miss new slang, coded requests, voice conversations, images and creator-built channels. Fix: Keep supervision and regular conversations in place, and teach the child to leave any interaction that feels wrong.
“My child only plays with friends”
Why it fails: A friend’s account can be compromised, shared or used to invite unknown players. Fix: Review who can follow, join, message or invite the child, not just the child’s visible friend list.
“Turning off public chat solves the problem”
Why it fails: Direct, party, voice, private-server or creator-made chat may remain active. Fix: Audit every communication channel separately.

Why it fails: A report does not undo information already shared or guarantee an immediate response. Fix: Block the account, preserve relevant details, tell a trusted adult and escalate urgent threats appropriately.

“A child should be polite”
Why it fails: Continued replies give a manipulative player more opportunities. Fix: Give the child permission to stop responding without explanation.
A short household rule set
- Chat is off unless a parent has enabled a specific channel for a specific reason.
- No real name, age, school, location, photos, passwords or contact details in game chat.
- No moving to another app, private server, voice call or video call without permission.
- Stop replying, block, report and tell an adult when a message is sexual, threatening, hateful, secretive or persistent.
- Parents may review settings, friends and recent interactions without treating that review as a punishment.
These rules should be short enough for a child to remember and specific enough to guide a decision in the moment.
What “safe enough” looks like
An MMO is safer for a child when the game’s rating fits the child, unnecessary communication is disabled, remaining channels are restricted to appropriate contacts, filtering and reporting are available, and the child knows exactly how to leave a conversation. It is not safe merely because the game is popular, the chat scrolls quickly or a platform advertises parental controls.

Parents should make the decision game by game and channel by channel. If the controls cannot prevent unwanted adult contact, if creator-made chat sits outside central settings, or if a child is not ready to follow the household rules, keep zone chat off and reconsider later.
