The catch is that “solo-friendly” rarely means every dungeon, raid, or reward is designed to be completed alone. Before choosing a game, check which parts support solo play and where group content begins.
What “playing an MMO solo” actually means
Playing solo usually means you control one character and do not need friends or a regular group to make progress. You may still share a world with other players, see them in towns, or encounter them during public events. That can give an MMO a sense of activity without requiring conversation or coordination.
Solo is also not the same as offline. The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), for example, has quests that accommodate solo players and a main story playable alone or with friends, but it does not have an offline mode, according to its official support information. If you need a game that works without an internet connection, solo-friendly MMO design will not meet that requirement.
What makes solo MMO play enjoyable?
- A story you can follow at your pace: A campaign or main quest gives solo sessions direction, whether you have an hour or a whole evening.
- Room to explore: Side quests, gathering, crafting, and open-world activities can make the world feel worthwhile between major story beats.
- Less pressure to organize: NPC allies or matchmaking can let you experience some group-shaped content without assembling a party yourself.
- Optional social contact: You can enjoy a populated world and join others when you feel like it, rather than treating group play as an obligation.
The fit depends on what you want. If your favorite part is a continuing story and a world to wander, solo play can be a satisfying way to experience an MMO. If you want to complete every endgame activity and earn every reward without other players, the group-oriented parts may become a hard limit rather than an occasional exception.

How four major MMOs support solo players
| Game | Solo-friendly activities and support | Where the limits show |
|---|---|---|
| FINAL FANTASY XIV | Square Enix’s manual describes solo quests and FATEs. The North American Free Trial page says Duty Support allows players to enter supported Main Story Dungeons with NPC allies. That page, accessed in 2026, advertises trial play through level 80 with no playtime restriction. | The manual cautions that some dungeons and trials may be too difficult to challenge alone. Duty Support covers supported dungeons, not every activity. |
| World of Warcraft | Blizzard describes campaign and side quests, solo Delves, and Normal Follower Dungeons that provide four NPC teammates. Its guide also describes Story Mode raid encounters with NPC companions; the cited solo guide specifies nine companions for the encounter it covers. | These supports cover particular content, not all instances. The Story Mode encounters described in the guide are tied to Dragonflight and The War Within content. Blizzard’s new-player guide describes free access through level 20; the guide’s publication year is not displayed, and subscription or game time is required beyond that limit. |
| The Elder Scrolls Online | ZeniMax support says solo players have access to plenty of accommodating quests and that the main story can be played solo or with friends. | ESO has no offline mode. The cited support answers do not establish that every dungeon or endgame activity can be completed solo. |
| Guild Wars 2 | ArenaNet describes story-driven content and a first-visit story mode for dungeons, giving solo-oriented players a narrative way into that content. | ArenaNet describes explorable dungeon paths as party content, Fractals of the Mists as five-player teams, and raids as ten-player instances. These are current page details accessed in 2026, not measures of player behavior. |
These examples show different kinds of support, not a ranking of which game is most fun. The feature details above come from official publisher or developer pages; the publication year is not displayed for the cited Blizzard solo and new-player guides.
Can NPC companions replace a real group?
NPC support can remove the need to find teammates for specific activities. In FINAL FANTASY XIV, Duty Support lets a player enter supported Main Story Dungeons alongside NPC allies. In World of Warcraft, Follower Dungeons provide four NPC teammates, while Story Mode raid encounters use NPC companions to support the narrative encounter.

That is a bridge into selected content, not a promise that the whole game has an NPC version. Support varies by activity and game, and an NPC party does not turn every group-focused challenge or reward track into a solo one. Check the specific dungeon, raid, or mode you care about rather than assuming the feature applies everywhere.
How to tell whether solo play will suit you
- Decide what you want to do most. If your priority is story, exploration, or crafting, look for games that explicitly support those activities alone. If your goal is all endgame content, inspect the group requirements first.
- Check for an answer to your likely sticking point. Look for NPC companions, solo versions, supported story instances, or matchmaking that lets you join without arranging a party in advance.
- Find out what remains group-only. Check the game’s descriptions of raids, dungeons, trials, and other high-level activities. A game can be welcoming to solo questing while still reserving some content for teams.
- Separate online access from group play. An MMO may let you progress alone while still requiring a connection. ESO is an official example of that distinction.
- Try before committing when a current trial is available. Square Enix’s North American FINAL FANTASY XIV Free Trial page currently advertises play through level 80 without a playtime limit and includes Duty Support in supported Main Story Dungeons. Blizzard’s new-player guide describes World of Warcraft free access through level 20, with subscription or game time needed afterward. These are page-specific access terms, not permanent guarantees; verify the current offer and region before signing up.
Is solo MMO play a growing trend?
Recent editorial coverage points to more ways to engage with MMO content across different levels of difficulty, time commitment, and organization. PC Gamer’s October 2025 feature discusses solo story and Delve options among those changes. GamesRadar+’s 2026 roundup likewise treats “best” as dependent on what a player values, such as story or exploration. These are editorial perspectives, not surveys proving how many players enjoy solo MMOs.
