Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Start with SteamOS updates, a restart, and a check for third-party apps; then work out whether the fault affects one game or the whole Steam Deck. For a single game, check its compatibility rating, verify its files if it crashes or content is missing, and adjust performance settings if it stutters. These steps can narrow down common causes, but Steam notes that instability has many possible causes and detailed diagnosis depends on the specific system and game.
First, check whether the problem affects one game or the whole Steam Deck
Test another game you know normally works. If only one title stutters, crashes, or fails to open, focus on that game’s compatibility, files, and settings. If several games—or SteamOS itself—are unstable, begin with device-wide software checks. This distinction matters: resetting the Deck is not a sensible first response to one game crashing.
Start with reversible device-wide checks
- Install available updates: Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install any update offered.
- Restart the Deck: Retest the affected game after the restart.
- Temporarily close third-party applications: Exit or disable apps installed through Desktop Mode, then test again. If the issue stops, re-enable apps individually to identify a possible conflict.
Steam lists updates, restarting, and disabling third-party applications among its first troubleshooting steps for system or application instability. See the Steam Deck software troubleshooting guide.
Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility
On the game’s Steam Store page, look for its Steam Deck compatibility rating and read any listed requirements or limitations. Steam describes four categories: “The Deck Verified system has four categories that indicate how well games will work on Steam Deck.” The ratings describe different levels of testing, not a guarantee that a game will behave identically for every player.

- Verified: The game works great on Deck by default.
- Playable: It works, but may need manual configuration or have other limitations noted on its Store page.
- Unsupported: Steam does not consider it playable on Deck at the time of the rating.
- Unknown: Compatibility has not been tested.
Ratings and game behavior can change as games and software are updated. Check the current rating and its specific notes rather than relying on an old report. Steam’s software guide explains the categories.
Steam Deck games stutter: reduce the game’s workload
If the game launches but stutters, first check its system requirements and lower its graphics preset. If needed, reduce demanding settings individually and retest. Requirements indicate what a game expects; meeting them does not promise a particular frame rate or consistently smooth performance.

Whether using the built-in trackpads or the included external controller, this allows for precision play in everything from FPS to complex strategy games.
Also check the Deck’s display refresh-rate limit before setting an in-game frame rate target. Steam’s basic troubleshooting guide says the LCD model’s display is capped at 60 Hz and the OLED model’s at 90 Hz. Settings above the relevant model’s cap cannot make the display show more frames per second and may use battery faster. Steam Deck game keeps crashing or content is missing: verify installed files
For a crash or missing game content, use Steam’s file-verification tool:
Rank #3
- Open the game in your Steam Library.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish. It may take several minutes.
Steam notes that a report saying one or more files failed to verify can be normal for many games when those files are local configuration files; that result can be ignored. Avoid verifying several games at once or running verification while doing other intensive work. Details are in Steam’s guide to verifying installed game files.
Steam Deck game won’t launch: try a Proton compatibility tool
After updating and restarting, check the game’s Compatibility properties. If Proton is not enabled for the game, Steam suggests enabling it for that title and trying the latest version available. This is a game-specific change; test the game again after applying it.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Be aware that choosing Proton can prompt Steam to download the Windows version of a game if the Linux version is currently installed. If the game still will not launch, Steam recommends consulting Steam Deck discussions or contacting Steam Support. For a failure isolated to one application, its developer may be better placed to diagnose the issue. See Steam’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide and general game launch troubleshooting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When and how to escalate a Steam Deck system problem
If ordinary checks fail and multiple games or SteamOS show instability, use Steam Support rather than jumping directly to a destructive recovery step. Steam documents several recovery options with different effects on local data:
Best Value
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
| Option | Effect on data | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Roll back to the previous SteamOS version | Retains user data. | When the evidence points to a broader SteamOS issue and the other checks have not helped. |
| Repair | Attempts to preserve games and personal content. | When system recovery is needed and retaining content matters. |
| Factory reset | Clears local data. | Only after considering the loss of local data and following Steam’s recovery guidance. |
| Re-image | Wipes user information, installed games, applications, or operating systems. | For more extensive recovery, with the understanding that local content is erased. |
Read Steam’s SteamOS recovery instructions and repair guidance carefully before proceeding; recovery instructions and menu paths can change with software updates. For a problem affecting one title, contact Steam Support or the game’s developer before considering a Deck-wide reset.
