OddsSeeker ranked the Nintendo community first among console gaming communities by the number of unique words in Reddit posts. That result does not show that Nintendo players have higher IQs or are more intelligent than other gamers: the analysis used word count as a proxy, not a cognitive test.
What did the study find?
OddsSeeker’s report, updated January 31, 2024, counted unique words in posts from gaming subreddits. It reported 22,216 unique words for the Nintendo community, the highest total among the console communities it compared. Across all 25 game and console communities, League of Legends had the highest reported total, at 32,020 words. OddsSeeker’s report says the analysis covered 366,904 Reddit posts.
Those figures are community-level word totals—not IQ scores, individual vocabulary tests, or per-player averages. The headline’s “most intelligent” wording describes the publisher’s interpretation of its chosen measure.
How did OddsSeeker measure intelligence?
The report explains its proxy this way: “To measure the intelligence of gaming communities, we totaled up the number of unique words used in online forums (under the assumption that a larger vocabulary indicates greater intelligence).” The assumption is central: the analysis counted different words in Reddit posts and treated a larger vocabulary as a sign of greater intelligence.

That is not the same as administering an IQ test or a standardized assessment. The report describes using sentiment analysis, profanity frequency analysis, and unique-word totals, but only the unique-word count underlies its intelligence comparison.
What the word totals can—and cannot—tell you
A subreddit’s total number of unique words can reflect many things besides the intelligence of its members. For example, totals may depend on how many people posted, how much they wrote, and the volume and style of discussion. OddsSeeker’s report does not specify how it handled those factors, so its totals should not be read as normalized comparisons between individual gamers or communities.

The report covers 25 subreddits, but it does not explain the selection criteria, exact dates of the sampling window, word-processing rules, duplicate handling, or a method for adjusting for different post volumes or user counts. It also does not establish that the Reddit communities represent all Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, PC, or mobile gamers. The result is best understood as a comparison of the selected communities’ reported word totals.

The analysis does not establish that. It found that the Nintendo subreddit had the highest unique-word total among the console communities in OddsSeeker’s comparison. It did not measure individual intelligence, compare IQ scores, or show that playing Nintendo games makes someone more intelligent.

Tech Times also reported the figures in a June 21, 2023 article and cautioned readers not to take the conclusion at face value. That article discusses a separate, earlier Royal Panda study with average IQ figures; those results are not part of OddsSeeker’s word-count analysis and should not be combined with it. Tech Times’ coverage is secondary reporting, while OddsSeeker is the source of the word-count method and totals.
