Are Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Worth $20 Each on Switch?

FireRed and LeafGreen are $19.99 apiece on Switch, not a $20 bundle. Here’s who should buy one, when both make sense, and what to know about local play and regional editions.

In the U.S., Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen each cost $19.99 on Switch—not $20 for both. They’re easiest to recommend if you specifically want these Game Boy Advance-era Kanto adventures, including the Sevii Islands, on current Switch hardware. Buying both at their listed prices comes to $39.98 before tax. Whether that is worthwhile depends on how much you value the classic games and local play with other owners.

What does $20 buy?

Nintendo lists the English versions separately at $19.99 each. Both became available on February 27, 2026, as digital releases for Nintendo Switch; Nintendo also lists them as supported on Nintendo Switch 2. These are not a two-game bundle. At the listed U.S. prices, buying both costs $39.98 before tax. Prices and availability can vary by region and may change. Nintendo’s U.S. FireRed listing and LeafGreen listing show the individual releases and prices; Nintendo’s U.S. announcement gives their release date.

What kind of game are you paying for?

Nintendo describes the Switch releases as versions of the Game Boy Advance games, originally released in 2004. They retain the Kanto adventure and include the Sevii Islands. The U.S. FireRed store page also says the releases include original in-game events to encounter Lugia, Ho-Oh, and Deoxys. That makes the appeal specific: revisiting this classic adventure, rather than buying a newly made Pokémon game.

Nintendo’s listings establish the games’ content and compatibility, but don’t establish performance improvements or substantial new technical features. If you’re paying mainly for a modern remake, a package of major enhancements, or a tested upgrade over the GBA experience, the available official details don’t make that case.

Should you buy one or both?

Buy one if you want the adventure, not a pair

If your goal is to play a classic Kanto journey on Switch, one edition may be enough. The official material establishes the shared Kanto and Sevii Islands setting, but does not provide a complete comparison of version-exclusive Pokémon. Choose based on which edition you want; don’t assume you need both to get the advertised adventure.

Buy both only if you have a reason to own both

Two separate purchases bring the listed U.S. total to $39.98 before tax. That may make sense if you want both editions or have a concrete plan to play and trade with someone who owns the other game. The available official descriptions do not enumerate the exclusive species, so they aren’t enough to decide between versions by a full Pokémon-by-Pokémon comparison.

What can you do with local wireless?

Nintendo says players can trade, battle, and chat over local wireless. The U.S. listing gives a range of two to five local wireless players, and Nintendo’s announcement says multiplayer requires additional games and systems. In practical terms, don’t buy one copy expecting one game and one console to provide multiplayer for a group.

Nintendo of Canada described linking up through local play without a Game Link Cable, as players did in 2004. That’s a useful description of the feature, but the extra-games-and-systems requirement still applies. Nintendo of Canada’s announcement describes the local-play feature.

Check the edition and features for your region

  • Language: Nintendo’s U.S. announcement lists English, French, and Spanish as separate purchases and says there is no in-game language selector. The UK listing names English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish editions. Check your region’s store and the language edition before buying. Nintendo UK’s FireRed listing and LeafGreen listing show the UK editions.
  • Play modes: The U.S. listing specifies TV, tabletop, and handheld modes. Nintendo UK lists the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller as compatible; it is optional, not a requirement for handheld play.
  • Save backup: Nintendo UK says the software does not support Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup. This is the limitation stated on the UK listing; check your own region’s store details rather than assuming identical terms everywhere.
  • Pokémon HOME: Nintendo’s U.S. listing says transfers are planned to start in October 2026. That is a dated plan, not confirmation that transfers are available now or that any particular reward or terms apply. Check Nintendo’s current listing for the latest status.

So, are they worth it?

At $19.99 each, they’re a reasonable buy if you want these particular classic adventures on Switch and value their portability or local wireless features. The case is more conditional if you’re considering both games without a specific reason, or expect a modern remake or extensive new features. For the right player, one game is a clear choice; the second is an additional $19.99 decision, not part of the first purchase.
