No general shutdown of PS4-wide online services is announced in the official PlayStation notices reviewed as of October 4, 2026. That does not mean every PS4 feature or game server will remain available: PlayStation has retired particular console features, and publishers can close online services for individual games. Check the live PlayStation status page for an outage, and the game’s publisher for a title-specific closure.
What has changed on PS4?
PlayStation’s important notices describe specific changes, not a shutdown of PS4-wide online services:
- PS4 Tournaments menus and Teams functionality became unavailable on October 27, 2025. PlayStation advised users to use Messages for groups or content previously shared in Teams.
- Starting in January 2026, PS4 titles are added less regularly to PlayStation Plus Monthly Game line-ups and Game Catalogue updates. This is a change to catalogue cadence, not an announcement about game servers.
- The notices also list earlier changes to features such as What’s New Activities.
A retired feature or a less frequent catalogue update does not establish that PlayStation Network has shut down.
PSN, a game’s servers, and PS4 features are different things
PlayStation Network services
PlayStation’s Service Status page covers categories including account management, gaming and social, and PlayStation Store. Check it when you experience a connection problem. A cached search result or an old status reading cannot confirm whether services are available at the moment you are having trouble; use the page at that time. PlayStation directs users with connection issues to PlayStation Repairs.

Servers for an individual game
Game publishers can end online multiplayer, leaderboards, or other online functions for a particular title while platform-wide services continue. PlayStation’s online game support page lists title-specific server closures. Search for the exact game and check its publisher’s current support or news announcements for the affected mode and effective date.
Console features and subscriptions
A feature retirement affects that feature; it does not by itself mean PSN is ending. Likewise, a change to the PS Plus game catalogue is not a server-status announcement.

Can a PS4 game’s online servers close?
Yes. Online services for a particular game can end separately from PS4-wide services. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation Network Terms of Service (October 2022 edition) states, “Online services are not provided for ever,” and says users will receive advance notice of a shutdown. For third-party-published games, Sony says it asks publishers to provide advance notice. The terms may differ by region, so consult the terms applicable to your account.
When a closure is announced, check which parts of the game are affected. A notice may concern multiplayer or other online features rather than the entire game. An active subscription cannot bring a publisher’s closed game servers back online.

Does PS Plus guarantee PS4 online multiplayer?
No. PlayStation says most PS4 and PS5 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, but some do not. Check the individual game’s PlayStation Store listing for its requirement; see PlayStation Plus support for details. A Plus subscription may satisfy a multiplayer access requirement, but it does not guarantee that a game’s servers are still operating.

- Check PSN status during the problem. Open PlayStation Service Status and look for an issue affecting the service you need.
- Check the exact game. Search PlayStation’s online game support page and the publisher’s official support or news page. Confirm the game, mode, and any announced closure date.
- Identify what is unavailable. Determine whether the issue is a temporary PSN interruption, a title-specific server closure, a retired PS4 feature, or a PS Plus requirement. These are separate causes and call for different answers.
If PSN status shows no relevant interruption and there is no closure notice for the game, the available official notices do not establish a permanent PS4-wide shutdown. Continue with the game publisher’s troubleshooting guidance for that title.
