Yes, Valve reviews games before they go live and prohibits malware, but Steam does not guarantee that every game, update, or Workshop file is malware-free. Valve describes a brief review that includes running the game and checking for harmful behavior; its public documentation does not promise a complete antivirus scan or security audit of every build. Keep Windows and antivirus protection enabled, and investigate warnings rather than automatically allowing or dismissing them.
What checks does Steam perform?
Valve’s Steam Direct documentation says that before a store page or game build goes live, Valve conducts a “brief review.” It runs the game, reviews the store page, checks configuration, and checks that the game is not doing anything harmful. Valve explicitly prohibits applications that modify a customer’s computer in unexpected or harmful ways, including malware and viruses.
That supports saying Steam reviews submissions; it does not establish that Valve manually audits source code, scans every executable with multiple antivirus engines, or certifies each game as safe. Valve does not publicly specify the scope, vendors, or detection rate of any automated security systems. Its Subscriber Agreement also says Valve does not guarantee that Steam, its content, or its services will be virus-free or secure.
- Store-page review: Checks the page and configuration against Steam’s requirements.
- Pre-release game review: Valve says it runs the game and checks for harmful behavior.
- Antivirus protection on your PC: Windows Security or another security product scans files on your device. This is separate from Valve’s review.
Steam’s delivery system and Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) are not substitutes for antivirus. VAC is designed to detect cheating, not certify a game’s files as malware-free.

Can malware still appear on Steam?
Yes. In February 2025, Valve removed PirateFi after suspected malware was found in builds distributed through Steam. Valve contacted potentially affected users and advised them to run a full-system scan and check for unexpected software. Bitdefender’s report on the incident describes Valve’s warning and response.
This is evidence that Steam’s review is not an absolute security guarantee, not evidence that Steam games are generally unsafe. A game may also become risky after its initial review: a developer could upload a malicious update, an account or build system could be compromised, or the game could download additional files after launch. An external server or installer component can create risks beyond the original Steam download.

Valve also warns that malware targeting Steam users may be disguised as pirated software, cheats, fake demos or betas, and gaming utilities such as communication software, mod managers, or inventory managers. Some malware is designed to evade common antivirus detection or remove itself after completing its objective. See Valve’s account-security recommendations.
Are Steam Workshop mods and user-generated files safe?
Workshop content is another trust boundary, not automatically equivalent to a game reviewed for release. The risk depends on how the specific game handles mods: some items are data, while a game’s mod architecture may allow scripts, external programs, or downloads. Steam presence, age, popularity, and ratings do not by themselves prove that a file is safe.

- Prefer established creators and items with a credible history; read recent comments for warnings.
- Be wary of urgent instructions to download a separate “fix,” installer, launcher, DLL, or utility.
- Do not run an executable, batch file, or PowerShell command just because a mod says it is required.
- For high-risk experimentation, consider a separate Windows account or test machine, and back up important data before heavily modifying a game.
What should you do if antivirus flags a Steam game?
- Stop launching the game. Do not immediately add a Defender or antivirus exclusion just to get it running.
- Record the alert details. Note the detection name, file path, and whether the product describes malware, a potentially unwanted application, or a vulnerable driver.
- Update protection and leave the file blocked or quarantined while you investigate. Check the game’s official Steam announcements and developer channels for a response, as well as recent community reports.
- Scan the game directory and run a full-system scan. Microsoft recommends updating protection and running a full scan when infection is suspected. If a detection persists or returns after Windows starts, use Microsoft Defender Offline; it scans outside the normal Windows session. Microsoft’s guidance is available in its antivirus FAQ and malware troubleshooting steps.
- If you suspect credential theft, use a known-clean device to change important passwords, especially for email, Steam, financial accounts, and your password manager. Revoke Steam sessions or authorized devices and enable Steam Guard.
- Contact the developer and Steam Support. If malware appears persistent or credentials or browser sessions may have been exposed, consider professional incident-response help or reinstalling Windows.
A warning is not automatically proof that a game is malicious. Some legitimate games and utilities trigger detections because they use kernel-level drivers, process hooks, memory modification, compression tools, or other behavior that resembles malware. Microsoft documents a vulnerable WinRing0 driver detection affecting some hardware-monitoring and gaming applications: Microsoft’s WinRing0 guidance. Verify the file’s location and publisher, check the developer’s official response, and report a suspected false positive to the security vendor. Only consider an exclusion when you understand exactly which file is being exempted and why; an exclusion reduces protection.
How can you reduce the risk before installing or launching?
Before installing
- Use the official Steam client and store page; treat unsolicited links and external downloads as separate decisions.
- Take extra care with brand-new games, suspicious free games, fake demos, and titles promoted through unsolicited messages. Check whether the developer has a credible history and read recent reviews rather than relying only on the overall rating.
- Keep Windows, Steam, browsers, and antivirus definitions updated.
- Be cautious if a game asks you to download an unrelated launcher, codec, “fix,” cheat, crack, or DLL from elsewhere.
Before launching an unfamiliar game
- Let your security product inspect the download. Do not override a warning simply because the game came from Steam.
- If an alert appears, check the file path and publisher signature, then look for an official developer or Valve response.
- Avoid files sent through Discord or Telegram, external download pages, or offers such as a “moderator job” that require running a utility.
Is paid antivirus necessary for Steam?
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is free and included with supported Windows versions, according to Microsoft’s antivirus-provider guidance. For most Windows players, keeping built-in protection enabled and updated is a sensible baseline. Microsoft says Defender turns off when another antimalware product is installed, so avoid running multiple real-time antivirus products simultaneously unless you understand how they interact.

A paid security suite may offer additional features such as multi-device coverage, ransomware controls, identity monitoring, or support. It cannot guarantee that a Steam game is safe. Defender Offline is already included with Windows and is an incident-response option for suspected persistent malware, not a routine scan required for every game. A clean result from any scanner is useful evidence, not proof that a file is harmless.
