No. Strongholds are not always under villages. The answer depends on the Minecraft edition and version: Java strongholds are arranged in rings around the world origin, while Bedrock has a limited village-linked exception alongside randomly placed strongholds. The belief has a real historical source in Pocket Edition, but it is not a universal rule for current play.
Why do players associate strongholds with villages?
The association began as a deliberate clue in an older Pocket Edition context. In a 2016 TIME interview, Mojang developer Jens Bergensten explained that when strongholds were added to Pocket Edition, players could not craft eyes of ender to locate them. He said Mojang therefore made sure a stronghold generated beneath a village, so seeing a village could hint that one was nearby.

That explanation applies to the Pocket Edition situation Bergensten described, not every Minecraft edition or version. His wording framed a village as a hint, not a general promise that every village in every version contains a stronghold.
How does village placement differ by edition?
The Minecraft Wiki stronghold reference describes different placement systems for Java and Bedrock. These mechanics should be read with the edition and version in mind; the reference is community-maintained rather than an official Mojang mechanics page.

| Edition or context | Stronghold placement described by the reference |
|---|---|
| Java Edition | Strongholds are placed at random coordinates within rings around the world origin (X=0, Z=0), across biomes. The reference gives eight rings and 128 strongholds total. |
| Bedrock Edition | Strongholds generate randomly throughout the world, with three additional strongholds guaranteed beneath village meeting points. This is a limited exception, not a guarantee for every village. |
| Older Pocket Edition context | Bergensten said strongholds were deliberately generated beneath villages as a clue when players could not craft eyes of ender to find them. |
What changed in Bedrock 1.10.0?
The reference’s version history says Bedrock 1.10.0 changed village-linked generation: most strongholds stopped generating beneath village wells and instead generated beneath village meeting points, and the chance of village-linked generation was reduced. This helps explain why accounts from different versions may not match. It does not establish that an arbitrary village in a current world sits above a stronghold.
Can you use a village to find a stronghold?
Not reliably as a general rule. The Bedrock reference identifies three guaranteed strongholds beneath village meeting points, but it does not say every village is a meeting point or provide a probability that a village has a stronghold below it. Java’s described ring-based placement is not a universal village-location rule.

For current play, use an eye of ender to locate a stronghold rather than treating a village as proof. The historical Pocket Edition clue addressed a time when eyes of ender could not be crafted; it should not be confused with current locating behavior across editions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do reports about villages and strongholds conflict?
- Edition: Java and Bedrock use different placement descriptions, and older Pocket Edition had a deliberate village clue.
- Version: Bedrock 1.10.0 changed the relationship to village wells and meeting points.
- What counts as the village location: The Bedrock exception refers specifically to village meeting points, not villages in general.
- Evidence limits: The cited reference gives mechanics and counts, not a measured probability that a particular village has a stronghold beneath it.
Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock village-generation documentation explains configuration of village generation through biome definitions, but it does not document stronghold placement. It therefore cannot establish that a village is above a stronghold.
