The tModLoader team says malicious uploads have been attempted, describes moderation and validation measures, and warns that some risk remains. Use trusted routes and check each mod’s publisher and instructions, but treat those checks as precautions—not proof that a file is harmless.
What makes a Terraria mod download risky?
tModLoader mods are third-party software. Its Terms of Use says mods made by people other than the tModLoader team are not under the team’s control, may include harmful components such as trojans or keyloggers, and are used at the player’s own risk. It also makes no guarantee about Mod Browser safety.

That warning does not mean every mod is malicious. It means that an official listing or installation route cannot establish the safety of every mod, version, or file delivered to a player. The available official sources do not provide an attributable malware rate, so there is no sound percentage to use when estimating the risk.
Do Steam Workshop and tModLoader checks make mods safe?
They reduce some risks but are not a guarantee. In a tModLoader announcement, the team described safer server mod-syncing, backend validation and moderation, and an approval queue developed with Valve to catch malicious mods and updates before they reach users. The same announcement says attempts to distribute malicious code have increased, and that attack vectors can be limited but not eliminated.
#1 Best Overall
- Build up a hospital from nothing to a masterpiece as you design the most beautiful – or functional – healthcare operation in the whole of Two Point County.
- Optimise your hospital design to increase patient (and cash) flow, arranging corridors, rooms and waiting areas to your exact specifications.
- Expand your hospital to multiple buildings as you look to get as many patients through the door as possible.
- Place decorative and functional items around your hospital to improve its prestige, lower patient boredom, increase happiness and keep those end of year awards flowing in.
- Features two great expansions, 21 hospitals and 119 very unusual illnesses!
The Workshop rules set standards for uploads, including private and friends-only content. They prohibit code obfuscation and Steam API abuse, require sensible file and network access, and bar accessing or modifying files outside tModLoader’s user-data directory, launching external programs, and telling users to download unrelated software. These are rules and moderation grounds—not evidence that every listed mod has been fully examined or that every multiplayer sync is harmless.
How to evaluate a mod before downloading
- Prefer established discovery routes. The tModLoader Steam listing says Steam Workshop is supported, but not required, because an in-game browser is also available. These routes provide useful platform context, not a safety certification.
- Check who published it. Review the publisher, description, update history, and community context. If the publisher or version is unclear, or the listing gives little reason to trust it, consider choosing another mod.
- Stop at requests that fall outside modding. Be especially cautious if instructions tell you to run a separate executable, install unrelated software, or allow access to unrelated files. Those requests conflict with the Workshop rules and deserve independent verification; do not assume they are necessary just because a mod page says so.
- Back up important saves. Keep copies of worlds and player files before modding. This is a general precaution, not a measure shown by the cited sources to be necessary or sufficient to make downloads safe.
- Judge the exact file and version. A mod’s reputation does not establish the safety of every update or file, and the sources do not establish the safety of every file delivered through multiplayer synchronization.
What about manual downloads?
CurseForge’s installation guide describes downloading and extracting a mod archive, placing its file in the tModLoader Mods folder, and relaunching. Those steps explain one installation method; they do not validate the file. Before using a manual download, confirm that the source and publisher are the ones you intended to trust, and be wary of extra files or instructions unrelated to installing the mod.
Quick Recap
Rank #2

- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles

What to do if something seems suspicious
- Do not run a separate program or install unrelated software just to use a mod unless you can independently verify why it is needed and who provides it.
- If you have not installed the file, stop and return to a trusted platform or publisher page rather than following an unexpected download link.
- If you already ran a suspicious file, stop using it and take appropriate steps to protect your device and accounts. The cited tModLoader sources do not prescribe a specific cleanup procedure or security product.
