Not as a whole. The people called the Assassins were Nizari Ismailis, a branch of Shi‘i Islam; some of their fidāʾīs carried out targeted political killings, but the familiar image of a secret, drug-controlled order of inherently evil killers comes largely from hostile accounts and later legend. It is more accurate to judge particular acts than to label an entire religious community “the bad guys.”
Who were the Assassins?
“Assassins” was the European name attached to the Nizari Ismailis, not a neutral or complete name for their community. In Syria, Nizaris became more visible to Crusaders in the opening decade of the 12th century. Their best-known leader there was Rashid al-Din Sinan, who died in 1193. The Institute of Ismaili Studies describes Nizari fidāʾīs—people undertaking dangerous missions—as selectively targeting prominent enemies in particular localities. European observers made their daring conduct seem even more extraordinary.
That context matters: these were political actions in specific conflicts, not evidence that every Nizari was a killer or that the community existed simply to commit murder.
Did they really use hashish to control their fighters?
The claim that Nizari fidāʾīs were routinely drugged to make them obey is not supported by the evidence described by the Institute of Ismaili Studies. Farhad Daftary writes that “There is no evidence that suggests that hashish or any other drug was used in any systematic fashion to motivate the fida’is”; he also notes that contemporary non-Ismaili Muslim sources, though generally hostile to the Ismailis, are silent on the allegation. The name’s association with the Arabic term ḥašišiya does not prove drug use. Encyclopaedia Iranica explains that Muslim writers used the term pejoratively to mean something like “low-class rabble,” not as an accusation that Nizaris actually consumed narcotics. How did the secret-order legend develop?
Accounts of the Nizaris grew out of competing political and religious perspectives. Encyclopaedia Iranica describes a hostile “black legend” in Muslim polemical traditions, with Sunni reaction intensified by conflict between the Seljuqs and Persian Ismailis. Later, Crusader and European writers circulated stories about secret practices, drugged recruits and a garden of paradise. Marco Polo helped popularize a later synthesis of these tales.

These stories offered a dramatic explanation for why fidāʾīs would risk death on dangerous missions. But a vivid story repeated by later writers is not the same as reliable evidence for a group’s actual practices. Modern Ismaili scholarship has also gained access to recovered Ismaili texts, allowing scholars to assess the tradition using evidence beyond hostile polemic and medieval European retellings.

There is no sound basis for calling an entire religious community inherently evil. At the same time, rejecting the caricature does not require excusing political violence: the sources describe targeted missions and killings in particular contexts. Those acts can be judged on their own terms, while sweeping claims about all Nizari Ismailis—and sensational stories about drugs and secret gardens—need to be treated with care.

For a video-game audience, the distinction is useful when a game borrows the name or imagery. Popular culture can draw on the legends, but it is not a reliable account of the Nizari Ismailis’ history. To explore how those legends formed and spread, see Farhad Daftary’s The Assassin Legends: Myths of the Ismailis, published by the Institute of Ismaili Studies.
