Yes—Battlefield 1’s guns are based on real First World War-era designs, but that does not make every weapon’s in-game configuration, assignment, or performance historically exact. DICE lead designer Daniel Berlin said the weapons shown in the game’s reveal were real weapons used in the period. He also said gameplay came first when designing weapons and vehicles, a useful distinction between historical inspiration and a documentary-accurate simulation.
What DICE said about the weapons
In a May 2016 interview with GamesBeat, DICE lead game designer Daniel Berlin said of the reveal: “Everything you saw in the trailer, those were real weapons used by soldiers in this time period. Shotguns, pistols, automatic rifles, everything.” That is a developer’s broad statement about the weapons shown in the trailer; it does not establish that every weapon in the finished game was common, widely issued, or used in precisely the configuration players see.

EA’s weapons feature says the developers spent years researching the world, events, and weapons of World War I. Creative director Lars Gustavsson described the game’s experience as “much more up-close and personal.” That supports the historical inspiration behind the arsenal, not a claim that the game reproduces every weapon’s service history in detail.
Why “real” does not always mean historically exact
A firearm can have a real historical design while its status or portrayal in the game remains simplified. To assess a particular gun, separate these questions:
#1 Best Overall
- Experience the dawn of all-out war as you take to the front line of combat across the entire theater of World War I

- Did the design exist during the First World War? A period design is not automatically evidence of widespread use.
- What was its status? It might have been a prototype, a manufactured weapon, or an operational issue weapon. Those are different levels of adoption.
- Who used it, when, and at what scale? The game’s inclusion alone does not establish its country, service, date, or prevalence in combat.
- Does the exact configuration match historical documentation? A stock, sight, magazine, or other feature may distinguish an in-game variant from a broader weapon design.
- How does its behavior compare with the real weapon? Handling and performance can be adjusted for gameplay, even when the underlying design is historical.
Berlin made that last point directly in the same interview: “For us gameplay is king. We need to make sure the vehicles and weapons are fun to use.” A 2016 TIME review likewise characterized the depictions as “virtual analogues” of their archetypes. The practical takeaway is that historical inspiration and game balance coexist.
What the weapon variants tell us—and what they do not
Battlefield 1 includes unlockable weapon configurations and variants. In its 2018 Weapons Crate Update notes, EA wrote: “The rest of the guns are new variants on weapons that previously only had one configuration.” That describes the update’s game content; it is not a claim that each exact configuration saw historical service.

The update names additions including the Annihilator Trench, Sjögren Inertial Slug, Ribeyrolles 1918 Optical, Maschinenpistole M1912/P.16 Experimental, M1917 Patrol Carbine, Type 38 Arisaka Patrol, Carcano M91 Patrol Carbine, Ross MkIII Infantry, and M1917 Enfield Silenced. EA’s Turning Tides assignment article also lists variants such as the M1917 Trench Carbine Factory, Maschinenpistole M1912/P.16 Factory, Farquhar-Hill Storm and Optical, and M1917 MG Low Weight and Telescopic. EA describes weapon assignments as challenges that reward variations on weapons already in the game.
These names show the variety of weapons and configurations represented, but the update and assignment descriptions do not establish each item’s real-world service record. A name in Battlefield 1 is not, by itself, proof that the precise version was fielded or widely used.

How to judge a specific Battlefield 1 gun
For a weapon-by-weapon history, look for reliable documentation that identifies the exact model and configuration. Check whether it existed during the war, whether it remained a prototype or entered production and service, which country or service used it, and on what scale. Then compare the documented configuration with the game’s version and account for gameplay changes to handling or performance.
The developer statements and EA update notes establish the game’s broad historical grounding and its use of variants. They do not verify the dates, users, deployment scale, or exact configuration of every firearm individually. Avoid treating every playable weapon as a common frontline issue weapon unless a source specifically supports that conclusion.
