Usually, no—not if you already own the Nintendo Switch versions and are happy with them. Square Enix says the Switch 2 editions improve resolution and frame rate, but there is no upgrade pack and save data does not transfer. You would be buying the game again and starting a new save. Rebuy if those stated improvements—or owning the Switch 2 edition—are worth that cost to you.
What changes in the Switch 2 editions?
Square Enix lists improved resolution and frame rate for both OCTOPATH TRAVELER and OCTOPATH TRAVELER II on Switch 2 compared with their Switch versions. The publisher has not provided resolution numbers or frame-rate targets in the cited product information, and no controlled side-by-side measurements are available here. The size of the improvement is therefore not established.
Square Enix also says the game content is the same across platforms. The publisher’s stated reason to consider the new editions is the visual and frame-rate improvement, not additional story content. Square Enix Support: game content across platforms.
Can you upgrade your Switch copy or carry over your save?
No. Square Enix’s product pages say there are no plans to sell an upgrade pack from the Switch version to the Switch 2 version, and that save data is incompatible between versions. Treat a Switch 2 purchase as a separate copy with a new save, not as an upgrade that continues your existing playthrough. See the official pages for OCTOPATH TRAVELER and OCTOPATH TRAVELER II.

Which buying option fits you?
| Option | What you gain or keep | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep your Switch copy | Avoid another purchase and keep access to your existing save. | You do not get the Switch 2 edition’s publisher-stated resolution and frame-rate improvements. |
| Buy one Switch 2 edition | Get the updated version of the game you most want to replay or own on Switch 2. | It is a separate purchase, and your Switch save will not transfer. |
| Buy the Switch 2 physical bundle | Get both games in the physical bundle Square Enix announced. | It only makes sense if you want both games again; current local price and stock are not established here. |
Square Enix announced the Switch 2 editions for October 1, 2026, with a physical bundle, and announced digital individual and bundle options. Check your regional retailer for current prices, format details, and availability before deciding whether either purchase offers value for you. Square Enix’s announcement.
Do you need both games?
No. The games are separate adventures, not consecutive chapters of one continuous story. Square Enix describes the original as set in Orsterra and OCTOPATH TRAVELER II in Solistia, each with eight distinct protagonists. Owning one does not make the other redundant; decide separately whether you want to buy each game again.

If you are considering OCTOPATH TRAVELER II specifically for its Extra Battle mode, note that Square Enix announced the mode for the original Switch version as well as PS5, PS4, and PC in June 2024. It is not a Switch 2-exclusive reason to repurchase. Square Enix’s Extra Battle announcement.

- Keep your Switch versions if you are satisfied with them, want to preserve your existing progress, or do not value the stated improvements enough to pay again.
- Consider an individual Switch 2 edition if you want to replay that particular game and prefer its improved resolution and frame rate enough to accept a separate purchase and fresh save.
- Consider the physical bundle only if you want both games in that format and its current regional price makes sense compared with buying only what you want.
These are conditional choices: Square Enix has not published the performance figures needed to quantify the improvement, and current local prices and discounts vary. The series had shipped and sold more than 6 million copies worldwide by Square Enix’s July 13, 2026 announcement; that is a publisher-reported combined series figure, not a current independent sales audit.
