Neither is universally better: torches are the straightforward choice for basic lighting, while regular lanterns are brighter and can hang beneath blocks, making them a stronger fit for many finished builds. Lanterns cost extra iron nuggets to craft, so the best option depends on whether you value convenience, resources, placement, or appearance.
How torches and lanterns compare

Which is brighter?
A regular lantern emits light at level 15, according to Mojang’s lantern article. Microsoft’s Bedrock creator reference lists a torch at level 14. The official Java snapshot also describes lanterns as giving slightly more light than torches.
Those figures indicate emitted light, not how many blocks a fixture illuminates or whether an entire area is safe from spawning. Coverage depends on placement and the applicable edition’s spawning rules.
What does a lantern cost, and where can you place it?
Mojang describes the regular lantern recipe as a torch surrounded by iron nuggets. A torch is therefore the lower-cost option when you simply need light and already have access to torches; a lantern spends additional iron for its brighter output and different placement options.

Lanterns can be placed on top of blocks or hung beneath them, a placement option documented in Java snapshot 18W46A. That makes them useful for suspended fixtures, entrances, and other builds where a torch’s placement would not suit the design.
When do soul and copper variants change the choice?
Soul lanterns
Soul lanterns have a blue appearance and emit light level 10, according to Mojang’s lantern article. They offer a dimmer visual effect than regular lanterns. Mojang says their light is sufficient to prevent monster spawning but does not melt snow and ice; this should not be treated as a universal guarantee across editions and versions.

Copper lanterns and torches
Java Edition 1.21.9 introduced copper torches and copper lanterns. The release notes say both are functionally identical to their regular counterparts; copper lanterns oxidize over time, changing their appearance. These variants are documented for that Java release, so check the version and edition you play before expecting them in your world.

Do not treat a single light value as proof that an entire area is spawn-proof: light falls off with distance, and placement geometry and edition-specific rules matter. Microsoft’s Bedrock creator documentation states that monsters cannot spawn on blocks at light level 8 or higher. That threshold is a Bedrock reference, not a complete guide to spawning behavior in every edition and version.

Which should you choose?
- Choose torches when you want a convenient, uncomplicated light source and do not need a lantern’s hanging placement or brighter output.
- Choose regular lanterns when the extra iron-nugget cost is worthwhile for brighter light or a more polished fixture.
- Choose soul lanterns for their blue look or where the documented lower light level suits the build, after checking your edition’s mechanics.
- Choose copper variants for their appearance in a compatible Java Edition version.
