For players, Roblox name colors in an experience are not a setting you can choose. Roblox Support says in-experience name colors are assigned at random and cannot currently be manually changed. What appears in chat can also depend on the experience: TextChatService uses a player’s team color by default, and creators can customize chat-name colors.
What “random” means for Roblox name colors
Roblox Support’s guidance is specifically about the color of a name inside an experience, not a profile-color setting. It states: “Currently, in-experience name colors are assigned at random. At this time, there is no way to manually assign this color or change it.” Roblox Support: How Do I Change the Color of My Name in an Experience?
That is the practical answer for players: there is no Roblox-wide control for picking the color shown beside your messages. The apparent result is not necessarily produced the same way in every game, however, because experiences can use different chat configurations.
Why the color can differ between experiences
Current TextChatService
Roblox Creator Hub says that, by default, TextChatService colors each user’s chat name according to their Player.TeamColor. Developers can change the appearance of chat names with ChatWindowMessageProperties and OnChatWindowAdded. Its documentation also shows a LocalScript example that assigns colors from a palette using a UserId-based mapping. That is an experience-specific customization, not a player-facing setting. TextChatService is Roblox’s system for in-session messaging, and its default interface can be configured by the experience’s creator. As a result, a name color you see in one game need not match the color used in another. Roblox Creator Hub: Text chat overview
Legacy chat
A November 15, 2023 Roblox Developer Forum community write-up says legacy chat’s familiar default name color was derived from the player’s actual username. It describes the result as stable for that username but designed to look random. Can you change your Roblox name color?
Not through a player setting: Roblox Support says users cannot manually assign or change their in-experience name color. A creator can configure chat-name appearance in an experience, but that control belongs to the experience’s developer. The legacy-chat explanation concerns the actual username, not the visible DisplayName; it does not establish that changing a DisplayName changes the color. So changing a username is not a dependable way to choose a preferred color. The official support answer does not offer manual selection, and the username-linked legacy behavior described by the community is not a color-picking feature.

Why is my username color always yellow?
A yellow name by itself does not identify one universal Roblox rule. It may reflect the particular experience’s chat configuration; in TextChatService’s default behavior, the relevant value is the player’s Player.TeamColor. Roblox’s support article does not document the legacy color algorithm, so a specific color cannot be explained universally from the available official guidance.
