Yes—Valheim’s dedicated-server software is free to download from Steam’s Tools library, but running a server is not automatically cost-free. With self-hosting, you provide the computer, electricity, internet connection, configuration and maintenance. Managed hosts charge a recurring fee in exchange for an always-online machine, a control panel and services such as backups, support, mods and crossplay.
The practical choice is therefore “free software with your own operating costs” versus “paid infrastructure with less administration.” A spare Windows or Linux machine and a technically comfortable host can make self-hosting the cheapest option. A paid plan is usually easier when the world must remain available while its owner is away.

What “free Valheim server” actually means
Iron Gate distributes an application called Valheim Dedicated Server through Steam’s Library Tools. You do not need a separate subscription to download that application. The software is separate from the infrastructure that runs it: a computer, power, network connection and someone responsible for keeping the process online are still required.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That creates two different meanings of “free”:
- No hosting bill: you run the dedicated-server application on hardware you already own.
- No cost at all: generally unrealistic, because electricity, internet service, replacement hardware, backups and your time still have value.
Self-hosting is most economical when somebody already has a suitable machine that can remain on for the group’s play schedule. If the owner’s computer is shut down, asleep, disconnected or undergoing maintenance, the world is unavailable. A managed provider shifts that responsibility to a rented server and support team, so the trade-off is a monthly charge rather than an upfront hosting bill.
Iron Gate describes the purpose of a dedicated server this way: “Running a dedicated server is a great way to provide a persistent world in which you and your friends can play anytime.” Persistence is the key benefit: the world process can continue independently of any one player’s game session, provided the machine and network stay available.
How free self-hosting works
The software
Install Valheim Dedicated Server from Steam’s Library → Tools section. This download supplies the server executable and example launch scripts for Windows or Linux. It does not supply a virtual machine, data-center connection, monitoring, automatic backups or technical support.
The machine
The host computer must run the operating system supported by the supplied script, have enough storage for the game files and world saves, and remain powered on whenever friends need to connect. A spare desktop, home server or rented virtual machine can fill that role; the “free” route only avoids a hosting subscription when the hardware and its operating costs are already covered.

The launch script
Iron Gate’s guide has you edit the supplied Windows or Linux script before starting the server. The script identifies the server name, world and access password and tells the application how to launch. Keep the password private, use a distinct world name, and make a copy of the script before changing it so you can restore a known-good version if a later edit prevents startup.
The network path
There are two connection models:
- Steam-backend mode: Iron Gate documents the default port range as 2456–2457. Players outside your home network normally need router port forwarding to reach the machine. The forwarding rule must send the documented ports to the computer running the server, and the computer’s firewall must allow the server process.
- Crossplay mode: traffic goes through a relay server. Outside players do not need inbound port forwarding to your home router, which can make setup possible on connections where you cannot change the router. Relay-based access still depends on the server machine, internet connection and the participating platforms being supported by the server configuration.
Port forwarding is not a hosting fee, but it is an administration task and a security decision. Forward only the ports the game requires, keep the operating system updated, and remove the rule if you stop running the server.

Free self-hosting: a practical setup sequence
The following sequence follows the workflow in Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide while leaving your exact save names and paths to your own setup.
- Install the tool. Open Steam, switch the Library view to Tools, and install Valheim Dedicated Server on the machine that will stay online.
- Locate the example script. Open the installation folder and make a backup copy of the supplied Windows or Linux launch script. Work from the copy so the original remains available for comparison.
- Set the server identity. Edit the script’s server-name, world-name and password values. Use a password that is not reused elsewhere and do not publish it in a public chat or server listing.
- Select the connection model. Use the documented Steam-backend launch for a direct server connection and plan for the 2456–2457 port range. Use the documented Crossplay option if you need relay-based access without inbound port forwarding.
- Configure the machine firewall. Permit the dedicated-server application and the required game traffic through the operating system firewall. A router rule alone cannot help if the local firewall blocks the process.
- Configure the router when using the Steam backend. Forward the documented port range to the host computer’s local address. Give that computer a stable local address so the forwarding rule does not point at a different device after a reboot.
- Start the server. Run the edited script and watch its console output for a successful startup. Do not close the console window unless you have configured another method to keep the process running.
- Test locally and externally. Join from the host’s network first, then ask someone outside the network to connect. Testing both paths separates a game or password problem from a router or firewall problem.
- Document recovery details. Record the script location, world-save location, router rule, firewall exception and administrator account. This turns a future reinstall or hardware replacement into a repeatable procedure instead of guesswork.
Costs and responsibilities that “free” hosting leaves with you
| Cost or responsibility | Why it matters | When it becomes a real expense |
|---|---|---|
| Computer hardware | The server process needs a machine that can remain online and store the world. | You buy a dedicated system, replace aging parts or rent a virtual machine. |
| Electricity | An always-on desktop or home server draws power even when nobody is playing. | Your utility bill rises with the machine’s power draw and uptime. |
| Internet service | Players need a reliable connection, and the host must have enough upload capacity for the group. | You upgrade service, exceed a data allowance or pay for a business connection. |
| Networking | Steam-backend hosting requires router port forwarding; both modes require firewall and operating-system administration. | You pay for networking equipment or spend time troubleshooting access and security. |
| Backups | World files can be damaged, overwritten or lost with the host disk. | You buy backup storage or another machine and schedule your own copies. |
| Maintenance | Updates, restarts, logs, permissions and mod changes are your responsibility. | Your time has an opportunity cost, or you hire someone to administer the server. |
| Availability | The world is offline whenever the host machine or connection is offline. | You add a second system, remote management or an uninterruptible power solution. |
These costs do not make self-hosting a bad choice. They explain why a plan advertised at zero euros or dollars can still cost more than expected for a group that needs 24/7 availability or professional recovery options.

A managed provider rents you an always-on server and wraps common administration tasks in a web panel. You still choose the world, password and configuration, but the provider operates the underlying machine and network. Published plans differ by currency, location, billing term, slot limit and promotion, so treat the figures below as snapshots checked on October 15, 2026 rather than permanent prices.
| Provider | Published price | Included or advertised capabilities | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Godlike.Host | See the current plans | Valheim server hosting through its own game panel, up to three free backups a day with restore, free DDoS protection and a built-in mod installer and updater | 24/7/365 support by live chat or ticket; check current plans for location and terms. |
| DatHost | €14.90 per month; €8.90 per month on six-month billing; €6.90 per month on yearly billing | 10 players, crossplay, one-click world manager, mods and plugins, backups, 14-day money-back guarantee | Currency and term discounts can change; verify the final amount at checkout. |
| GPORTAL | $15.59 per 30 days; $42.09 per 90 days; $79.51 per 180 days; a three-day offer from $6.24 | 10 slots, 50 GB of backup space, DDoS protection, ValheimPlus and one-click mods, crossplay | Published prices depend on location and term; the three-day figure is an offer, not a standard monthly rate. |
| Nitrado | $16.19 per 30 days; $43.59 per 90 days; $4.09 per three days before the displayed promotion | Crossplay among PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2, plus selectable locations and 10 slots | The displayed 40% reduction requires promo code DEEPNORTH40; do not treat the sale price as the normal renewal price. |
A lower advertised rate may require a longer commitment, a particular location or a promotion. Before paying, check the currency, tax, renewal price, number of player slots, storage and backup limits, cancellation terms and refund policy.
What the managed features are worth
Always-on availability
A provider’s central value is that the world can remain online while the owner is at work, asleep or away. You do not need to leave a personal desktop running or ask one player to host every session. This matters most to groups whose schedules do not overlap.

Control panels and file access
Web consoles commonly expose start, stop and restart controls, configuration fields and a file manager. These tools reduce the need to edit launch scripts or log in to the operating system directly. They do not eliminate the need to understand which world, password and mod settings you are changing; an incorrect edit can still prevent startup.
Backups and restoration
Managed backups provide a second copy of the world on provider infrastructure. Check how often copies run, how long they are retained, whether storage is included, and whether restoration is self-service. A backup that cannot be restored by you or support is not a complete recovery plan, and provider backups do not replace an independent copy of a valuable world.
Mods and plugins
One-click mod installers and support for tools such as ValheimPlus can simplify deployment. Every player may still need a compatible client-side setup, and a game update can make a mod unavailable. Keep a list of installed mods and their versions so you can remove or roll back a problematic change.
Crossplay
Crossplay support is a provider-specific feature, not a guarantee that every plan supports every platform. One published Nitrado configuration lists PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 support; other plans may advertise crossplay without listing the same platform combination. Confirm the exact platforms, region and version before purchasing.
Locations, latency and support
Selecting a server location near most players generally reduces network distance, but the best location depends on where the group lives and which regions the provider offers. Support can save time diagnosing a failed update, inaccessible panel or damaged world, while a self-hosted administrator must handle those incidents alone. DDoS protection, where included, is another managed network service rather than a feature supplied by the free Steam download.

Self-hosting versus paid hosting
| Decision factor | Self-hosted dedicated server | Managed provider |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring hosting bill | None for the software itself; hardware, power, internet and time remain yours. | Monthly or prepaid charge, with price affected by currency, term, location and promotions. |
| Setup effort | Install the Steam Tool, edit a Windows or Linux script, configure firewall and usually forward ports. | Create a service, choose a location and configure it through a control panel; exact effort varies. |
| Availability | Depends on your machine, electricity, connection and maintenance. | Designed for continuous operation on the provider’s infrastructure. |
| Steam-backend networking | You normally configure the 2456–2457 port range and router forwarding. | The provider handles the server network; you still follow its connection instructions. |
| Crossplay | Use the documented relay-based Crossplay mode to avoid inbound port forwarding, subject to supported platforms. | Available only where the selected plan advertises it; verify platform coverage. |
| Backups | You create, store and test them. | Some plans include scheduled or offsite backups; retention and restore controls vary. |
| Mods | You install and update files yourself. | Some panels offer one-click mods or plugin managers, but compatibility remains your responsibility. |
| Support | Self-support through documentation and community troubleshooting. | Provider support may assist with infrastructure and panel issues under its plan terms. |
| Control | Full control of the machine, operating system and network. | Convenience in exchange for provider limits, policies and possible migration procedures. |
Which option is cheapest?
If you already own a machine and keep it online anyway, self-hosting has the lowest additional cash cost: the dedicated-server application itself does not add a hosting subscription. It is not necessarily the lowest total-cost option once electricity, hardware depreciation, backup storage and administration time are counted.
Published managed examples use different currencies and commitments, so compare the current plan terms rather than treating one figure as universal. DatHost’s yearly rate is €6.90 per month when billed yearly, while its month-to-month figure is €14.90. Those amounts are different commitments and currencies, so they cannot be compared as if they were one universal monthly price. GPORTAL’s $15.59 per 30 days and Nitrado’s $16.19 per 30 days are closer month-to-month comparisons; their longer-term prices and short promotional offers have different effective commitments.
The cheapest plan on a price table may not be cheapest for your group. A plan without the needed platform support, location, backup retention or mod workflow can force a second purchase or a migration. Compare the feature you would otherwise have to provide yourself, not only the headline number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Crossplay and port-forwarding choices
Use Steam-backend hosting when direct networking is acceptable and you can administer the router. The documented 2456–2457 range and firewall rules are part of that setup. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, your router does not expose a public address, or you simply cannot change the router, inbound forwarding may be impossible or undesirable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Crossplay mode uses a relay, so outside players do not need an inbound port-forwarding rule. That removes one common obstacle for a self-hosted server. It does not make the server independent of your home connection: the host machine still has to be online, and the relay path can introduce its own availability or latency considerations.

For a paid service, read the platform list rather than assuming that “crossplay” includes every console. Confirm whether your chosen world, game version and mod set are compatible with the advertised platforms before inviting players who use different hardware.
Backups, mods and moving a world
World data is the irreplaceable part of a Valheim server. On a self-hosted machine, establish a routine that stops or safely pauses the server before copying save files, keeps multiple dated copies and stores at least one copy on another device. Test opening a copy before deleting older versions. The exact save path depends on your operating system and configuration, so use the path shown by your installation rather than copying a location from an unrelated setup.
A managed panel can make scheduled backups and file transfers easier, but ask how to download your world if you cancel. A provider-specific backup format or inaccessible file manager can complicate migration. Keep your own export before major mod changes, game updates or a provider move.
Mods add another layer of risk. Change one variable at a time, record the mod and plugin versions, and retain an unmodded or previously working configuration. If a server stops after an update, first restore the last known-good configuration and backup; then test the mod or plugin separately.
Troubleshooting a free server
Friends cannot connect in Steam-backend mode
- Confirm the server process is running and the password is correct.
- Check that the router forwards the documented 2456–2457 range to the current local address of the host machine.
- Verify the operating-system firewall allows the dedicated-server process.
- Test from outside the home network; a local test can succeed even when inbound internet access is blocked.
- Check whether the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT or another arrangement that prevents inbound connections.
Crossplay players cannot join
- Confirm that the Crossplay launch option, rather than the Steam-backend option, is active.
- Ensure the server is online and that each player is using a supported game version and platform.
- Temporarily remove recently added mods or plugins to rule out compatibility problems.
- Restart the server after recording the current configuration, then retest with one external player.
The world appears rolled back or is missing
- Stop making changes and identify the newest intact backup or save copy.
- Check that the launch script or panel is pointing to the intended world name; an accidental name change can make a new world appear.
- Restore a copy only after preserving the current files for diagnosis.
- If no independent backup exists, recovery may not be possible; this is the principal self-hosting risk that managed backup services are designed to reduce.
The server stops after an update
- Read the server console output for the first error rather than the final shutdown line.
- Revert the last mod, plugin or script edit and test the unmodified configuration.
- Confirm that the dedicated-server application and player clients are on compatible versions.
- Keep a dated record of successful configurations so you can return to a known-good state.
Choosing in five questions
- Do you already have a machine that can stay online? If not, the “free” route requires a hardware or virtual-machine purchase.
- Can you edit a launch script and administer a firewall and router? If that work is outside your comfort zone, a control panel may justify the monthly fee.
- Must the world be available when the owner is away? If yes, compare always-on hosting or arrange reliable self-hosted uptime.
- Do players use different platforms? Verify Crossplay support and the exact platform list before selecting either a self-hosted mode or provider plan.
- How valuable is the world? If losing it would end the group’s interest, budget for tested, independent backups regardless of where the server runs.
Checklist before you commit
- Write down the required platforms, number of simultaneous players and preferred server region.
- Decide whether Steam-backend port forwarding is acceptable or whether relay-based Crossplay is necessary.
- For self-hosting, test startup, external connectivity, firewall rules and a backup restore before inviting the whole group.
- For paid hosting, compare the renewal price, billing term, currency, taxes, slot count, storage, backup retention, locations, mod tools, support and refund rules.
- Download a copy of your world before changing providers, installing major mods or ending a subscription.
Godlike.Host is listed first here for Valheim hosting, with its own game panel, up to three free backups a day with restore, free DDoS protection and 24/7/365 support; see Godlike.Host for current plans. Self-hosting is the lowest-bill route when spare hardware and technical time are already available. Paid hosting is the practical route when consistent uptime, cross-platform access, managed backups or support matter more than avoiding a recurring charge.
