ARK breeding is a controlled way to combine a species’ natural stats, raise a newborn with imprint bonuses, and build mutation lines. Start with two compatible creatures of the same breeding species, enable mating, complete the egg or gestation cycle, and record the baby’s natural stats before leveling or imprinting it. Each natural stat has a 55% chance to come from the parent with the higher value. Full imprinting can then raise the bred creature’s base stats by 20% and, when the imprinter rides it, provide up to 30% more damage and damage resistance.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted ARK: Survival Evolved servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The reliable order is prepare parents, mate, hatch or deliver, claim, record inherited stats, then imprint. Treat mutations, imprint bonuses and player-applied levels as separate systems; mixing them together is the fastest way to lose track of a breeding line.

What ARK breeding does
Breeding creates a new creature from two compatible parents rather than taming a wild individual. Non-mammalian species produce a fertilized egg that must complete incubation. Mammalian species use gestation instead. Once the offspring is born or hatched, you claim it directly; it does not go through the wild-creature taming process.
The parents supply the baby’s natural stat values. For every stat, the game gives the higher parental value a 55% chance of being inherited. That roll is made per stat, so one baby can take the mother’s health and weight, the father’s melee value, and a different combination for stamina, oxygen or food. The result is not a simple average.

Imprinting happens after the newborn is claimed and during maturation. Care requests ask for food, cuddling or a walk. Completing requests raises imprint progress. Imprint bonuses belong to the raised creature and should not be entered into your breeder-stat records as if they were inherited points.
Mutations add another layer by changing random stat and color outcomes and by increasing mutation counters. Serious lines therefore need written records, a repeatable naming scheme and a plan for the server’s level limits.
Check compatibility before you enable mating
Use this checklist before troubleshooting a failed mating attempt:
- Both creatures are the same breeding species and normally opposite sex.
- They are within mating range of one another.
- Mating is enabled, or the creatures are set to wander where that method is used.
- Neither creature is following another target.
- Both can move; a creature that cannot move into range cannot complete the interaction.
ARK treats visual variants such as original, Tek, Aberrant, X and R as separate species for breeding. Two creatures can look related yet remain incompatible if they belong to different variant lines. Verify the exact variant before building a pen around a pair.
Prepare a safe breeding area
Build an enclosed pen that keeps the parents together and prevents the newborn, egg or pregnant parent from wandering into danger. Leave room to reach the baby for care requests and to move a mammal away if you need to protect the newborn. Keep storage nearby for the food required by the species, but do not assume that a request will always be food: the care type can be food, cuddling or walking.
Use a written label or spreadsheet for each parent. Record species and variant, sex, natural stat values, mutation counters and any identifying name. Do not overwrite those values after a player levels the creature or after imprinting.

How to mate creatures step by step
- Choose the breeding pair. Confirm that both creatures belong to the same species variant and that their useful natural stats are recorded. For a first project, select parents with clearly documented values rather than relying on the creatures’ displayed post-tame levels.
- Place them together. Put both in the breeding pen with an unobstructed path and enough room to move. Check that neither is set to follow another creature or player.
- Enable mating. Turn on the mating option for both creatures, or use the server’s permitted wandering method. If the mating indicator does not appear, recheck sex, range, movement and enablement before changing anything else.
- Wait for the mating cycle. Non-mammals eventually leave a fertilized egg; mammals begin gestation. The exact interval depends on server settings and events, so use the current in-game timer instead of a generic online countdown.
- Protect the egg or pregnant parent. Keep the fertilized egg in the required incubation conditions for its species, or keep the pregnant mammal safe until delivery. There is no one universal temperature, timer or food schedule for every species and server, so follow the indicators shown in your game.
- Claim the newborn immediately. A hatched or delivered baby can be claimed directly. Claiming establishes who can perform imprinting under default settings.
- Record the baby before modifications. Write down its natural stat values and mutation counters before applying level-ups or relying on imprint bonuses. This is the baseline for deciding whether the offspring belongs in your breeding line.
Eggs, gestation and claiming
Fertilized eggs
For non-mammals, mating produces a fertilized egg rather than an immediately usable baby. Incubation is a separate stage: the egg must remain in the conditions required by that species until it hatches. A safe incubation area should prevent accidental pickup, damage and temperature problems while still allowing you to monitor progress.
Gestation
Mammals carry the offspring through gestation. The parent remains part of the process until delivery, so protect it as you would protect an incubating egg. Do not treat gestation as a taming phase; the delivered baby is claimed directly.
Why the claiming player matters
On default settings, only the player who claimed the newborn can imprint it. If several people share a base, decide in advance who will claim and perform care requests. Server configuration can affect the practical rules, so a community server should confirm its settings before assigning an imprinting job to another player.
How ARK baby stat inheritance works
The inherited value for each natural stat is selected from one parent. The higher parental value has a 55% chance of being selected for that stat; the lower value remains possible. Because the roll is made separately for each stat, offspring from the same pair can have different combinations even when no mutation occurs.
Natural stats are the values the creature brings into breeding. Player-applied level-ups are not inherited values for future breeding, and imprint bonuses are not inherited values either. A creature that looks stronger because you spent levels on it or raised its imprint percentage is not automatically a stronger breeder.
Illustrative inheritance example
Suppose a male has 40 natural health points and a female has 30. Each offspring has a 55% chance to receive the 40-point value and a 45% chance to receive the 30-point value for health. If the female has the higher natural melee value, that stat uses a separate 55% roll in her favor. The baby can therefore combine the strongest values from both parents, but it is not guaranteed to do so in every stat.

| Stat source | Used for a breeding record? | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Natural value inherited from a parent | Yes | This is the value selected by the per-stat inheritance roll. |
| Player-applied level-up | No | Level-ups added after taming or birth are not the inherited breeder values. |
| Imprint increase | No | Imprinting modifies the raised creature; it does not become a parental natural stat. |
| Mutation result | Track separately | Mutations can alter random stat and color outcomes and raise mutation counters. |
Record points, not just the displayed level
A displayed level can hide whether strength came from inheritance, mutations, level-ups or imprinting. Keep a line-by-line record for health, stamina, oxygen, food, weight, melee and any other stat your project uses. Record the parent values before spending levels, then record the baby’s values immediately after claiming. This makes it possible to identify the best natural combination rather than selecting a creature because its current level happens to be high.
Imprinting: requests, bonuses and timing
Imprinting is the care process performed while a bred creature matures. The baby periodically asks for one of three interaction types: a requested food item, cuddling or walking. Complete the request shown by the game, then continue monitoring the maturation timer for the next one.

At full imprint, the bred creature can receive a 20% increase to its base stats. When the creature is ridden by the player who imprinted it, it can also receive up to 30% increased damage and damage resistance. The rider-specific effect is why a perfectly imprinted mount can perform differently for its imprinter than for another player.
These bonuses are applied to the raised creature. They do not rewrite the natural stat values you should use when choosing parents, and they do not transfer to the next generation as inherited points.
Plan care around maturation
- Check the baby’s current maturation percentage and the time until the next care request.
- Keep the requested food available before the timer expires; if the request is cuddling or walking, make sure the pen allows the required interaction.
- Complete each request with the player who claimed the baby when using default settings.
- Record the final imprint percentage separately from the natural stats and mutation counters.
Rates are server-dependent. Faster maturation can create shorter request windows, while slower rates can spread care over a much longer session. Events and configuration changes can also alter mating, maturation and imprint intervals, so use the timers in your current game rather than a guide written for another server.
Mutation breeding without losing the line
Mutations affect random stat and color outcomes and are tracked with mutation counters. They are useful for specialized lines, but they make undocumented breeding difficult to audit. Before mating a mutation candidate, write down both parents’ counters, the baby’s counter result, the changed color or stat and the generation label you use.

Choose a line strategy
The official mutation documentation discusses separated and combined approaches. A separated approach keeps work organized around a particular stat or mutation line before combining successful lines. A combined approach brings several desired lines together earlier, which can reduce the number of separate pens but makes counter and ancestry records more demanding. Neither approach removes the need to verify each baby’s natural stats.
Pick one naming convention and use it consistently. A useful label can include the species variant, generation, targeted stat and mutation-counter pair. Keep the original unmutated or baseline parents documented so that a mistake does not force you to reconstruct the line from memory.
Watch server level limits
Stacking mutations raises the creature’s eventual level. Official-server level caps can therefore become a hard constraint: a line that keeps gaining mutations may approach a limit even when its individual stat gains are desirable. Check the cap that applies to your server before committing to a long mutation project, and preserve a clean breeder line so you can restart or branch if the cap becomes a problem.
Mutation record checklist
- Parent names, sexes, species variant and natural stat values.
- Mutation counter shown for each parent before mating.
- Baby’s natural stat values before level-ups or imprint interpretation.
- Any changed stat and color result attributed to the mutation.
- Generation or branch name and whether the baby is retained, used as a breeder or rejected.
- Current server level-cap considerations.
Choosing a breeding approach
The right method depends less on a single perfect creature than on how consistently you can record, raise and house offspring. Use the following comparison before expanding a facility.
| Approach | Natural-stat quality and consistency | Mutation-counter management | Maturation and imprint timing | Space and female capacity | Level-cap exposure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baseline inheritance line | Prioritizes combining the strongest documented parental stats; outcomes still use the 55% per-stat roll. | Lowest bookkeeping burden when no mutation project is being pursued. | Every retained baby still needs care planning; server rates determine the workload. | Can start with a small, controlled pen. | Lower exposure because the line is not deliberately stacking mutations. |
| Separated mutation branches | Focuses on preserving a clear target stat or color in each branch before combining. | Clearer ancestry, but every branch needs its own counter and generation records. | More babies may need to be raised and compared, increasing care windows. | Requires additional pens or clearly marked groups as branches multiply. | Each branch can be monitored before a final combination pushes levels higher. |
| Combined mutation line | Can bring several desired results together sooner, but mixed ancestry is harder to audit. | Highest record-keeping demand because counters and inherited stats must be checked together. | More simultaneous offspring can make imprint scheduling difficult on fast or event-boosted servers. | Efficient only if the facility can support enough females and safe newborn space. | Greater risk of reaching an official level cap while stacking results. |
Twins and triplets
The official breeding page reports a 10% chance of twins and a 2% chance of triplets. These are birth outcomes, not a guarantee that every mating will produce multiple babies. Prepare enough food, space and attention for more than one newborn whenever a breeding session matters.
Multiple births also multiply the record-keeping task. Claim each baby, note its natural stats and mutation counter separately, and decide which offspring belongs in the line before spending levels or assigning names that could confuse their records.

Troubleshooting a breeding attempt
The mating option never appears
- Confirm that the creatures are the same species variant; original, Tek, Aberrant, X and R variants are treated separately.
- Verify opposite sex and move the pair closer together.
- Enable mating for both creatures or use the allowed wandering method.
- Stop follow commands and make sure both creatures can move.
The pair stops before producing an egg or gestation
- Keep both creatures within range for the complete cycle.
- Remove obstacles or movement restrictions in the pen.
- Check whether a server event or setting changed the displayed interval.
- Use the in-game indicator to distinguish an active cycle from a canceled one.
The baby seems weaker than the parents
Compare natural stat values one stat at a time. The higher parental value has a 55% chance, not a certainty, so a baby can inherit the lower value in several stats. Also remove player-applied levels and imprint bonuses from the comparison; neither is an inherited breeder value.
Another player cannot imprint the baby
Under default settings, imprinting belongs to the player who claimed the newborn. Have that player complete the requests, or confirm the server’s configuration before changing the claiming arrangement on a future birth.

The line becomes impossible to track
Stop adding mutations until the records are rebuilt. Identify a documented baseline, separate natural stats from level-ups and imprinting, write down both parent counters, and use a single generation naming scheme going forward. A clean branch is safer than continuing to mate creatures whose ancestry and counters are unknown.
Version and server-setting caveats
Breeding behavior is affected by server rates, events and configuration. Mating range, maturation speed, imprint intervals and practical care windows can therefore differ from one server to another. Always use the current timers and settings shown in your game.
The ARK Official Community Wiki’s pages for the core figures were current in 2026. Its breeding page notes that ARK: Survival Ascended updates are still needed, so label version-specific instructions when publishing or maintaining a server guide. The inheritance, imprint and multiple-birth figures above should be treated as the cited wiki values, while local configuration determines how long each stage takes.

Bottom line
Successful ARK breeding is disciplined record-keeping wrapped around a simple loop: mate compatible parents, protect the egg or gestation, claim the newborn, identify which natural stats it inherited, and imprint it on schedule. The 55% higher-stat inheritance chance rewards good parents but never guarantees a perfect baby. Imprinting can add 20% to base stats and up to 30% ridden damage and resistance for the imprinter, yet those bonuses must remain separate from the natural values used to build the next generation. Once mutations enter the project, counters, branches, server rates and level caps matter as much as the creatures themselves.
