If ARK: Survival Evolved cannot connect, first establish whether the server is actually online, fully started, and reachable on the correct address. Wait for the server console to finish registration, try a direct connection, and test the local network before changing client files or forwarding ports. This order separates a still-starting server from browser-list delays, mod downloads, firewall blocks, and internet-routing problems.

Start by identifying where the connection fails
“ARK can’t connect to server” covers several different failures. A server that is absent from the browser is not necessarily offline, while a timeout after clicking Join can be caused by a large mod download rather than a dead server. Use the symptom that matches your case to choose the first test.

Confirm that the server has finished starting
Wait for registration, not just the process window
A running process does not prove that ARK is ready to accept players. A 2026 hosting guide reports that a server can take up to about 15 minutes from process start to appear in a browser, particularly while the world, configuration, and mods initialize. Watch the server console for its registration or ready message before troubleshooting the client. Restarting repeatedly during this period can reset the startup work and make the delay longer.
After the console reports readiness, allow the Steam master server list a further couple of minutes to update. A freshly started server can be healthy while the public list still contains old information. If the server is still absent after the startup and list-update windows, move to a direct connection instead of relying on the browser.

Check the address and server type
- Confirm that you are searching the correct category: Official, Unofficial, Favorites, or the appropriate platform filter.
- Search the exact server name without assuming that a browser result proves the address is correct.
- For a self-hosted server, distinguish the public address used by remote players from the private address used inside your home network.
- Make sure the server is running the same ARK edition and platform that your client supports. This article concerns ARK: Survival Evolved; an address for another edition will not become valid through port changes.
Use the right port for browser lookups
ARK commonly separates the port used for game traffic from the port used for server queries. The port numbers most often cited by hosting documentation are shown below, but community reports are not fully consistent. Treat your server’s configuration and official documentation as authoritative.

The query port is the important one when the server is missing from a browser. Forwarding only the game port can allow a direct join while leaving the server invisible to list queries. Conversely, opening a port that the running server is not listening on will not make the browser find it.
Community discussions disagree about the exact forwarding set: some describe a port-and-port-plus-one arrangement, while others suggest opening TCP and UDP for 27015 and 7777. Because those reports span older versions and different hosting environments, do not treat any one combination as universal. Record the values in the server’s launch parameters or control panel, then map those exact values in the router.
Bypass the browser with a direct connection
Direct-connect procedure
- Start ARK: Survival Evolved and enter a game menu where the console is available.
- Press Tab to open the in-game console.
- Enter
open YOUR_IP:7777, replacingYOUR_IPwith the server’s reachable IP address and using the game port configured by the server. - Press Enter and wait for the connection attempt to complete. Do not close the game while a modded server is downloading content.
This test bypasses the Steam master list. If it succeeds, the server is reachable and the problem is probably browser registration, a stale list, or a query-port mismatch. If it fails from outside the network but succeeds on LAN, focus on forwarding, the public address, or CGNAT. If it fails on LAN as well, inspect the server process, local firewall rules, and the configured game port.
Test the LAN path first
When the server and a player are on the same home network, try the server’s private IPv4 address. A successful LAN join proves that the ARK process and local game traffic are functioning, while avoiding the ISP and router’s external path. It does not prove that remote players can connect: external access still depends on forwarding and the ISP’s network design.

If LAN joining fails, verify that the server is bound to the expected network interface, that the host firewall allows ARK, and that the client is not connected through a guest Wi-Fi network that isolates devices. Keep the LAN result separate from the public result; mixing the two addresses is a common cause of apparently contradictory tests.

Some Steam users encounter an “app ID is invalid” message when launching a server connection from the Steam browser. A troubleshooting guide describes this as a Steam client bug and recommends avoiding the browser hand-off:
- Open Steam and launch ARK: Survival Evolved normally.
- Wait until the game reaches its server browser.
- Open the Favorites or Unofficial list inside ARK.
- Join the server from that in-game list, or use the direct-console command above.
This workaround addresses how the connection is launched; it does not repair a server that is offline, blocked, or using an incompatible mod set. If the in-game list also fails, return to the startup, LAN, and direct-connect tests.
Allow time for mods and repair mismatches
Distinguish a slow download from a timeout
Modded servers may appear to time out while ARK downloads a large or numerous set of Workshop items. Retry once after allowing extra time, especially after the server has just changed its mod list. Interrupting the download can leave the client in a partial state and produce the same error on the next attempt.
Resubscribe and verify files
- Exit ARK completely.
- In Steam Workshop, unsubscribe from the server’s required mods and subscribe again to refresh the local subscriptions.
- Wait for Steam to finish downloading the Workshop content.
- Use Steam’s installed-game properties to run Verify integrity of game files.
- Restart Steam and ARK, then try the server again.
A server administrator should confirm that the server’s active mod IDs match the advertised list and restart the server after changing them. A client cannot solve a server-side list that is incomplete, incorrectly ordered, or still downloading on the host.

Check for version and content changes
- Update the game before investigating a connection that began immediately after a patch.
- Do not assume that a successful connection yesterday proves that today’s client and server content still match.
- If only one modded server fails while unmodded servers work, prioritize Workshop resubscription and the server’s mod configuration over router changes.
Remove local network blocks
Firewall and antivirus
Allow ARK and its related processes through the operating system firewall on the network profile you actually use. If antivirus software includes a network shield, add the game only through its documented application-allow list rather than disabling protection permanently. After changing a rule, restart ARK and test the same address again.
On a self-hosted machine, the firewall must allow the server process to receive the configured game and query traffic. A router rule cannot compensate for a host firewall that silently drops packets.
VPNs, proxies, and home-network equipment
- Disconnect from a VPN or proxy for one test. These services can change the apparent public address, block inbound traffic, or prevent local-address access.
- Restart the router and modem, then wait for the internet connection to stabilize before testing.
- Check that the server host retains the private IP address used in the forwarding rule. A DHCP change can send forwarded traffic to the wrong device.
- Do not test a public address from inside the same network and assume failure proves remote failure; some routers do not support NAT loopback. Ask a player on another connection to test, or use the LAN address internally.
Self-hosting: forwarding, CGNAT, and safe scope
Map the router rule to the actual server
- Give the server computer a stable private IP, preferably through a DHCP reservation.
- Read the server’s launch settings or panel to identify its game port, query port, and any additional port it explicitly uses.
- Forward those values from the router’s internet-facing interface to the server computer’s private IP, using the protocol specified by the server documentation.
- Restart the server, wait for full registration, and test first from LAN and then from a different internet connection.
Common documentation lists 7777, 7778, and 27015, but the evidence is inconsistent about whether 7778 is required and whether TCP should be included. Open only the ports your configuration requires. Avoid forwarding administration services merely because they appear next to ARK settings.
Understand CGNAT
Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) places several customers behind one public IPv4 address. In that arrangement, your router may accept a forwarding rule while the ISP’s upstream NAT prevents unsolicited traffic from reaching your home. If LAN connections work, the server registers locally, and correctly mapped ports still fail from an outside network, ask the ISP whether the connection uses CGNAT and whether a public IPv4 address or an approved alternative is available.
Do not expose administration ports unnecessarily
SFTP and RCON are administration channels, not prerequisites for ordinary player connections. Do not forward them unless you specifically need external administrative access and have secured that access according to the relevant software’s instructions. Exposing extra services increases attack surface without fixing a missing ARK browser entry.

Why online port checkers can report “closed”
A port checker does not simply ask whether a router rule exists. It reports a port as open only when the destination application answers the probe in a way the checker recognizes. An ARK port may therefore appear closed while the server is running if the checker uses the wrong protocol, the server is not listening at that moment, the address is behind CGNAT, or the application does not respond to the checker’s scan.
Use an actual ARK connection from a separate network as the decisive test. Compare the result with the server console and router logs instead of treating a generic “closed” result as proof that every forwarding rule is wrong.

Use this isolation sequence when the cause is unclear
- Server readiness: confirm the process is running, the console reports registration, and the initial startup period has passed.
- In-game browser: search the correct category and allow the master list a few minutes to update.
- Direct public test: use
open YOUR_IP:7777with the configured public address and game port. - LAN test: from the same network, connect to the host’s private IP.
- Client repair: address Steam launch errors, Workshop downloads, game-file verification, firewall rules, and VPN or proxy use.
- Router and ISP: check forwarding, the host’s private IP, protocol selection, and CGNAT only after the local tests succeed.
The pattern of results matters more than any single error message:

Targeted fixes for common scenarios
The server never appears, but the console is ready
Verify that the browser is using the query port rather than the game port, wait through the master-list delay, and try a direct connection. If direct joining works, correct the query-port setting or browser filter instead of changing the game port.
Everyone times out, including LAN players
Stop changing router rules and inspect the server host. Confirm that the world finished loading, the process is listening on the configured port, the host firewall allows it, and the server has not exited after an error. For a modded server, check that required content completed installation.

LAN works but remote players cannot join
Reserve the host’s private IP, recheck the forwarding destination and protocol, test from a genuinely separate connection, and investigate CGNAT with the ISP. A browser listing alone cannot prove that inbound player traffic reaches the host.
Only a modded server fails
Allow the download to complete, refresh Workshop subscriptions, verify game files, and compare the server’s active mod list with the client’s installed content. Router changes are unlikely to fix a content mismatch that affects one server.
The Steam shortcut reports an invalid app ID
Launch ARK first and join through its Favorites or Unofficial list. Use the in-game console for a direct test if the list remains unreliable.
What an administrator should record before escalating
- The ARK edition and platform, server name, and whether the server is official, unofficial, rented, or self-hosted.
- The exact time the server process started and the time the console reported registration.
- The configured game port, query port, additional port, and protocols, copied from the active launch configuration.
- Whether LAN joining works, whether a direct public join works, and whether another internet connection was tested.
- The client’s exact error text, including whether it occurred before or after a mod download began.
- Recent game, server, or mod changes and the result of Steam file verification.
These details distinguish a browser-discovery problem from an unreachable service and prevent repeated, contradictory port changes.
Key cautions about port advice
Port recommendations circulating in community threads date from different eras and configurations. Reports include a game port plus the next port, TCP and UDP combinations, and optional forwarding for 7778. None should be generalized to every ARK server without checking the active server settings. The same caution applies to old Steam-client behavior: the in-game join workaround is low-risk, but an “app ID is invalid” message does not establish that the server’s ports are correct.
