The Giganotosaurus (Giga) is an apex carnivore built for overwhelming damage. It is also one of the most demanding creatures to tame and manage in ARK. The practical plan is to secure a controlled knockout, protect the unconscious animal while you manage food and narcotics, and evaluate its inherited and tamed statistics rather than chasing a single “perfect” number. Riding requires a level-96 Giganotosaurus Saddle, so the project includes both a dangerous field operation and a substantial crafting investment.

The ARK Official Community Wiki describes the species as “one of the most powerful creatures in the games.” That power is not a guarantee of success: level, wild-stat distribution, taming effectiveness, imprinting, breeding, rage behavior, positioning and server settings all shape the result.

What makes a Giganotosaurus valuable?
A tamed Giga’s main job is high-damage combat. Its enormous health pool and melee potential make it suitable for apex-predator work that ordinary mounts cannot handle. The creature’s value comes from the combination of durability and damage, not from a universal damage figure that applies to every server.
Two Gigas that look similar can perform very differently. A high wild level, a favorable distribution of points into health and melee damage, strong taming effectiveness, useful imprinting and selective breeding can produce a far better animal than a lower-quality tame. Difficulty settings, stat multipliers, damage rules and other server configuration can change the numbers again. Treat any benchmark from another server as a comparison point, not a promise.

- High-damage combat: use the Giga when the priority is killing dangerous targets quickly.

The Giga is not automatically the best choice for every journey. Its size, handling requirements, saddle cost and risk during taming make smaller, more mobile or easier-to-replace creatures preferable for routine travel and low-threat chores.
Wild baseline stats and what they mean
The cited wild baseline for a Giganotosaurus is 35,000 health, 400 stamina and 10,000 torpidity. These are reference values for the species, not a promise that every wild spawn will finish with those exact numbers. Wild levels distribute additional points, and the final tamed creature is further changed by taming effectiveness and later progression.

How to judge a wild candidate
- Record the wild level and visible stats. A high level gives you more opportunities for useful point distribution, but level alone does not tell you whether the points landed in health or melee.
- Prioritize health and melee for combat lines. Health determines staying power; melee determines how efficiently the Giga converts that staying power into kills.
- Check stamina and weight for your actual job. They are secondary to combat output for many players, but a candidate intended for long operations may benefit from a more practical distribution.
- Compare multiple candidates before committing. A single specimen can look impressive while carrying wasted points in stats you will not use.
- Separate wild quality from post-tame bonuses. Taming effectiveness can add levels and improve the final result, so keep a record of the animal before and after taming.
What taming effectiveness and imprinting change
Taming effectiveness contributes to the final creature after the knockout tame. Protecting the Giga, avoiding unnecessary food loss and maintaining the process helps preserve that bonus. Once the animal is raised, imprinting can improve the finished mount as well. The exact outcome depends on the game version and server settings, so use your server’s values when deciding whether a candidate is worth the effort.

How to tame a Giganotosaurus
Taming a wild Giga is a major survivor project because the animal must be controlled, knocked out and kept unconscious long enough to complete a large carnivore tame. The safest approach is a prepared trap or another controlled knockout setup appropriate to your map and version. Build and test the containment plan before you provoke the creature.
Prepare before you approach
- Choose a location: use terrain and a trap design that prevent the Giga from reaching your base, storage, tames or escape route.
- Clear nearby threats: wild predators can damage the trap, interrupt the knockout or consume the unconscious Giga.
- Bring more supplies than the minimum: the tame length and consumption rate depend on your server’s settings. Have the food and narcotic reserves calculated for that configuration, with a practical safety margin.
- Plan a retreat: leave yourself a route that does not pass through the trap or the Giga’s attack area.
- Use a support mount or team only if it is reliable: an uncontrolled helper can turn a planned knockout into a fatal mistake.
Secure the creature
- Lure the Giga into the prepared containment area. Keep your escape route clear and avoid letting it bite you or your support creatures while you position it.
- Confirm the trap has actually held. Do not begin the knockout simply because the Giga appears enclosed; check for gaps, climbable edges and line-of-sight problems.
- Knock it out from a controlled position. Use the knockout method appropriate to your map, version and available equipment. Maintain enough distance to avoid taking unnecessary damage.
- Secure the perimeter immediately. The animal is vulnerable once unconscious, and outside creatures or accidental player damage can end the tame.
Manage the unconscious Giga
- Open the inventory and start the tame with the appropriate carnivore food. Exact food counts are not universal; calculate them for your server rather than copying a value from another setting.
- Watch torpor continuously. The Giga’s cited wild torpidity baseline is 10,000, but the knockout can still fail if torpor falls too far before the tame finishes.
- Use narcotics when the torpor trend requires it. Apply them in response to the displayed torpor and the expected remaining tame time. Avoid treating an online calculator’s quantity as a guarantee when rates differ.
- Keep the area protected. Recheck the trap, remove threats and prevent accidental attacks on the unconscious animal.
- Track progress rather than leaving blindly. Food consumption, torpor drain and tame duration vary with server configuration, so inspect the inventory and status at regular intervals.
- Allow the tame to finish before moving the animal. Once it stands, verify its level and final stats before deciding whether it belongs in your breeding or combat plan.
Why exact tame quantities cannot be universal
Food consumption and torpor timing change with difficulty, taming speed, food settings, creature level and other server rules. A number that is correct on one server can leave you short on another. Use a calculator that accepts your map, edition and rates, then carry reserve supplies. The calculator is a planning aid; the creature’s inventory and torpor bar are the authority during the actual tame.

Evaluating a newly tamed Giga
Do not judge the animal only by its post-tame level. A final level includes level gains and taming-effectiveness bonuses, while the useful information is how those points are distributed.
Combat evaluation checklist
- Health: does the animal have enough durability for the fights you intend to enter?
- Melee damage: is the offensive stat strong enough to justify using the Giga rather than a less expensive mount?
- Stamina: can it perform repeated actions without forcing you into frequent pauses?
- Weight: can it carry the supplies and loot required for the operation?
- Level and origin: was the animal wild-caught, bred, imprinted or raised under unusual server multipliers?
Keep records for every candidate. A simple spreadsheet or notes page containing wild level, pre-tame stats, post-tame stats and later breeding results will reveal which lines are genuinely improving. Without records, it is easy to mistake a higher displayed level for a better combat animal.

Breeding and imprinting decisions
Use the strongest health and melee combinations as the starting point for a breeding line, then track offspring rather than assuming every baby inherits the best values. Imprinting can improve the finished creature, but its effect depends on the version and configuration you are playing. Decide whether a mount is intended for personal riding, a group stable or repeated combat, because that changes how much time you should invest in raising and selecting it.

Gather the listed materials before the tame if you want to ride immediately after completion. The hide requirement is substantial, and the metal requirement may compete with weapons, structures or other late-game engrams. The saddle’s 25 armor is part of the mount’s survivability calculation; it does not replace good health, positioning or a suitable combat plan.
Check the saddle before a dangerous trip
- Confirm that the engram is learned by the survivor who will craft and use it.
- Verify that you have 680 hide, 350 fiber and 120 metal ingots or scrap metal ingots available.
- Inspect the finished saddle’s armor value before equipping it.
- Keep a spare plan for replacing the saddle if the mount is lost, especially on servers where material gathering is slow.
Using a Giga safely in combat
The Giga’s exceptional power can encourage overconfidence. Practical results depend on rage behavior, positioning, server settings and breeding quality, so treat each fight as an operation rather than assuming the species label guarantees victory.

Positioning
Choose open ground where the Giga can turn and where you can see incoming threats. Avoid ledges, narrow passages and terrain that lets a smaller enemy attack from an angle you cannot monitor. Keep allies and valuable structures out of the bite path; a large carnivore is difficult to steer once a fight becomes crowded.
Rage management
Rage is a specific risk to plan around. Watch the creature’s behavior and the situation around it instead of focusing only on the target’s health bar. If the fight starts to produce uncontrolled movement or threatens your own team, disengage toward the prepared retreat route rather than trying to force one more attack.
Match the animal to the mission
- Use a high-health line when absorbing sustained damage is the central requirement.
- Use a high-melee line when shortening the engagement is more valuable than carrying extra durability.
- Use an imprinted personal mount when you can provide the attention and care needed to realize its bonuses.
- Use a less valuable tame for scouting, routine travel or resource work where Giga-level combat power is unnecessary.
Comparing a Giga with another combat tame
The available evidence does not support a universal ranking across every ARK version. Instead, compare candidates against the mission and rules of your own server.

This framework prevents a common mistake: comparing a well-bred, imprinted Giga on boosted settings with an ordinary wild-caught mount and treating the difference as a species-wide rule.

Common failure points and recovery plans
The trap does not hold
Stop the knockout attempt, create distance and reassess the containment before trying again. A damaged or incomplete trap is more dangerous than waiting for a better location. Repair or rebuild it, clear nearby threats and confirm that the Giga cannot reach the escape route.
The Giga wakes before the tame finishes
Your torpor supply or timing was insufficient for the server’s rates. Recover only if the situation is safe; otherwise retreat and prepare a new attempt. For the next try, calculate quantities from the actual level and settings, bring reserves and schedule regular inventory checks.

Identify the source before repeating the operation. Nearby wild creatures, players, environmental hazards or accidental attacks can all end a vulnerable tame. Choose a safer site, improve perimeter control and keep combat mounts away from the unconscious body.
The finished Giga feels weak
Review the recorded wild level, point distribution, taming effectiveness, imprinting and server multipliers. A high final level can hide poor investment in health or melee. Compare it with other candidates using the same criteria before spending time on breeding.
You cannot ride after taming
Check that the Giganotosaurus Saddle engram was unlocked at level 96, that its 75-point cost was paid, and that the crafting materials were available: 680 hide, 350 fiber and 120 metal ingots or scrap metal ingots. Then equip the completed saddle on the tamed creature.
