“Version mismatch” means your ARK dedicated server and the connecting game client are running different builds. Update the client completely, stop the server, update or validate the dedicated-server files with SteamCMD, and restart only after SteamCMD finishes without errors. Back up the save and configuration first. If your hosting provider has not released the patch yet, waiting is safer than wiping or restoring the world.

What an ARK version mismatch means
ARK: Survival Ascended checks the build advertised by a dedicated server against the build installed on the player’s machine. After a patch, Steam may update one side before the other. The result is commonly shown as an outdated server, a version mismatch, or a failure to join even though the server appears online.

This error does not, by itself, indicate a damaged world. It usually means that executable and content files are out of sync. A save becomes a separate concern only after a freshly updated and validated server still fails while the client and server are confirmed to be on the same build.
Symptoms that point to a build mismatch
| What you see | Most likely explanation | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The server is visible but joining is refused | The client and server advertise different builds | Finish the client update, restart Steam, then compare the server’s advertised version |
| SteamCMD reports no useful change | The command updated a different installation, the patch is not available to that account yet, or the files are already current | Confirm the production install path and available disk space |
| The host panel says “updated,” but players still cannot join | The panel may have updated a standby copy or the host has not completed its rollout | Stop the server, verify the panel’s installation, and check the version shown in the server list |
| A patch is available to players but not to your server | Rollout lag or a delayed depot update | Ask the host whether the dedicated-server depot has been released; do not alter the save while waiting |
Community reports sometimes describe a minor client/server difference that still permits a connection, while major updates generally require both sides to move together. Those reports are anecdotes rather than an official compatibility rule. Treat any mismatch as a problem to resolve instead of relying on a particular pair of build numbers.

Identify which ARK installation you are updating
Use the dedicated-server app ID
The SteamCMD target used by the dedicated-server guides is app ID 2430930. The Steam community game pages use app ID 2399830, which is a different application. Substituting the game app ID for the server app ID can leave the actual server files untouched while SteamCMD appears to complete a command.
Find the folder the live server really uses
Many failed updates are not failed downloads: they update a second copy. A test installation, an old migration folder, or a host panel’s staging directory may receive the new files while the launch script continues to start the original folder.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Stop the running server from its normal control panel or service script.
- Read the launch script or service definition and record its working directory and executable path.
- Compare that path with the folder selected by SteamCMD or the host panel’s update action.
- After updating, check the timestamp and file sizes in the same directory that the production process will launch.
Do not assume that a folder named “ARK,” “Server,” or “SteamCMD” is the active copy. The path used by the running service is the one that matters.
Back up the world before updating
Stop the server cleanly before copying files. The ArkToolbox guide recommends preserving the world save, tribe data, player data, and configuration files. Keep the backup outside the directory that SteamCMD will update, and label it with the date and the build you were running.
- World save: preserves map progress and structures.
- Tribe data: preserves tribe ownership information.
- Player data: preserves character and inventory state where those files are stored separately.
- Configuration: preserves server settings, command-line options, and gameplay customizations.
A SteamCMD validation checks program files. It does not test whether the world save is internally healthy, and it should not be treated as a save backup. Keep the backup even when the update appears routine.

Fix the mismatch in the normal order
1. Finish updating every client that will connect
On Steam, allow ARK to finish downloading and installing its patch, then restart Steam. If players use another supported platform, have them complete that platform’s update and restart the game or console as appropriate. A server cannot make an old client current.
Ask every affected player to check the game’s download status rather than trusting a desktop shortcut. A paused, queued, or partially installed update can leave one player on an older build while another player has already moved forward.
2. Stop the dedicated server
Use the normal stop control and wait for the process to exit before changing files. Updating files while the server is still writing the save can produce an incomplete installation or leave a running process with a mixture of old and new libraries.
3. Run a complete SteamCMD update
From the machine that hosts the live installation, run the command used by the Supercraft Host and ArkToolbox guides:
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2430930 validate +quit
This targets the dedicated-server application, validates its downloaded program files, and exits when the operation is complete. Validation takes longer than a plain update because SteamCMD checks files that already exist as well as downloading changed content. One guide notes that validation is not required for every routine patch, but it is the safer first response when a server reports a mismatch or an update appears incomplete.

- Design your survivor, shape the trunk and tame, train, multiply and ride dinosaurs in a vivid ecosystem
- Public online mode for up to 70 players, private multiplayer mode for up to 8 players + local split screen for 2 players
Watch the entire output. A command window closing without an obvious error is not proof that the production directory changed; compare the path in the command’s output with the path used by the launch script. Treat a clean completion as the point at which you may restart, not the moment the download first begins.
4. Start the server only after SteamCMD finishes
Restart the service after SteamCMD exits cleanly. Let the server finish its normal boot, then check the version it advertises in the server browser against the client build. If the browser still reports the old version, stop again and return to the installation-path check rather than repeatedly rebooting the same files.
When SteamCMD does not appear to update ARK
Check free disk space first
A patch may need room for temporary depot files as well as the final files. A full drive has been reported to stop an update. Check the volume that contains both SteamCMD’s download cache and the dedicated-server installation, not only the system drive. Free space on a different disk does not help if the target volume is full.
Confirm the command is operating on the live folder
Compare three locations: the directory selected for SteamCMD, the directory named in the launch script, and the directory whose files changed after the command. If they differ, update the folder that the production service actually launches, or change the service deliberately and test that change before allowing players to connect.
Community reports also describe silent no-ops caused by command-line ordering or by a script invoking SteamCMD with unexpected arguments. Rather than copying an unverified workaround, use the documented app ID and inspect the output and resulting file timestamps. A successful login followed by no change in the live directory is a path or depot-selection problem until proven otherwise.

Try a fresh SteamCMD installation
If the target path, app ID, and disk space are correct but files still will not refresh, download a fresh copy of the official SteamCMD package and repeat the update against the backed-up installation. One user report described success after re-downloading the SteamCMD archive. This is a recovery step for a damaged client tool, not evidence that the world itself is corrupt.
Handle login failures in stages
Anonymous login normally works for the dedicated-server app according to the ArkToolbox guide, although it notes occasional Steam delays. Steam community reports claim that anonymous access stopped working for some users and that an account owning the game was required. The evidence is inconsistent, so use this order:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Try the anonymous command exactly as shown.
- If SteamCMD reports an authentication or entitlement failure, repeat the update with a Steam account that owns the relevant game, following SteamCMD’s prompt for credentials and any required guard code.
- Do not publish or store the account password in a launch script. Run the update interactively or use your host’s secure credential mechanism.
An authentication failure is different from a version mismatch: resolve the login error before judging whether the depot itself is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when a host has not rolled out the patch
Self-hosted administrators can usually start the SteamCMD procedure as soon as the dedicated-server depot is available. Rented servers depend on the provider’s rollout schedule. A forum report describes a patch being available to players while personal servers were still waiting; that is plausible rollout lag, but it is a single user report rather than a published service guarantee.
Ask the provider a specific question: has app ID 2430930 been updated on the machine running your instance, and has the instance been restarted after that update? If the answer is no, leave the existing world in place and wait. Reinstalling, deleting the save, or restoring an older backup cannot make an unreleased server build appear.
Host control panel versus self-hosted SteamCMD
| Approach | Who controls update timing | Useful action | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted SteamCMD | You control the command, path, validation, and restart | Back up, stop the service, run the app-ID 2430930 update, then verify the advertised version | A script can target the wrong copy or run out of disk space |
| Hosting control panel | The provider controls depot rollout; you control the panel action and restart | Use the panel’s update or validate action only after confirming the instance and backup | The panel may show “updated” before the provider’s server image is current |
Panel labels vary. “Update,” “install latest files,” “validate,” and “reinstall” are not interchangeable: a reinstall may remove files you intended to keep. Read the panel’s warning and preserve the save and configuration outside the server directory before selecting a destructive option.
Choose between a plain update and validation
| Operation | When to use it | What it checks | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain app update | A routine patch when the installation is known to be healthy | Downloads files Steam identifies as changed for app 2430930 | Faster, but gives less confidence when a previous update was interrupted |
Update with validate |
A mismatch, suspected incomplete download, or unexplained “no update” result | Program files in the dedicated-server installation | Takes longer; it still does not inspect the world save |
| Fresh SteamCMD download | The SteamCMD client itself appears damaged or repeatedly fails to refresh files | Replaces the command-line tool before repeating the depot update | Requires another download and careful confirmation of the target path |
Validation is not a cure for a host-side rollout delay. If the provider has not published the new depot, validating repeatedly will return the same available files.
Do not confuse a mismatch with save corruption
A mismatch alone is not a reason to wipe the map, delete configuration, or restore a backup. Those actions can discard progress while leaving the client/server build difference unresolved.
Use this escalation boundary:
- Before a clean update: preserve the save and configuration; do not restore or wipe.
- After a clean update but with the wrong advertised version: investigate the live path, app ID, host rollout, and restart sequence.
- After a freshly validated server advertises the same build as the client but still fails: begin a separate investigation of configuration, mods, authentication, or save health, using the backup to recover if necessary.
This separation prevents a file-depot problem from becoming an irreversible world-data problem.
Patch labels and major updates
Search summaries of Studio Wildcard patch discussions use both “Major” and “Minor” labels for server releases. Check the label and the current release notice before deciding whether a temporary mismatch might be tolerated. No official compatibility rule or current build-number table was retrieved for the guidance summarized here, so do not infer a universal rule from an individual community example such as a client on 47.4 connecting to a server on 47.2.

Its dates and build references do not align cleanly, and the change was not verified against an official Studio Wildcard notice. Do not schedule maintenance around that date solely on the guide. If an official notice confirms an engine or boot-system change, treat it as a likely major update: update the client and dedicated server together, keep the backup, and wait for the server depot to be available before restarting players’ sessions.
A practical diagnosis sequence for administrators
- Record the client build and the version shown for the server in the browser.
- Confirm that every affected client has completed its update and been restarted.
- Back up the world, tribe and player data, and configuration files.
- Stop the dedicated server and verify the production install path.
- Check that the target volume has enough free space.
- Run
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2430930 validate +quitfrom the host that owns the live files. - If anonymous authentication fails, retry with an owning Steam account through a secure interactive login.
- Wait for a clean completion, then start the server and compare its advertised version with the client.
- If the host has not released the patch, leave the world untouched and wait for the rollout.
- Only after a same-build, freshly validated server still fails should you investigate save or configuration problems using the backup.
The critical details are the dedicated-server app ID, the installation path, and the order: backup, stop, update or validate, clean completion, restart, then compare versions. Changing that order makes it harder to tell whether the problem is a missing depot, a wrong folder, an interrupted download, or a genuine post-update failure.
