For a lightly populated ARK: Survival Ascended dedicated server, the published empty-world figures range from 7–8.5 GiB of RAM for Extinction to 10.5–12 GiB for The Center. Those numbers describe a newly created map with default settings and no players, so they are floors rather than safe production allocations. Add memory for the operating system, connected players, world age, structures, creatures, storage, configuration and mods. Use a modern CPU with strong single-thread performance, four logical cores per server instance, and an NVMe SSD.

At-a-glance RAM requirements by map

The following values are the published working-set ranges for an empty new world using default settings with no connected players. They are useful for comparing maps, but they do not represent the memory a busy public server will require.

Map Empty-world RAM Numeric value published? Planning implication
The Island 8–10 GiB Yes Use the upper end as the starting point before adding operating-system and workload headroom.
The Center 10.5–12 GiB Yes The largest published empty-map range here; it deserves the most conservative single-map plan.
Scorched Earth 7.5–9 GiB Yes Lower empty-world footprint does not remove the need for headroom when the world ages or mods are added.
Aberration 8–10 GiB Yes Plan from the upper end, then validate with the actual player and mod mix.
Extinction 7–8.5 GiB Yes The lowest published range, but still only an idle-world floor.
Ragnarok Not published No numeric value published Do not substitute another map’s figure; measure a clean instance and reserve conservative headroom.
Astraeos Not published No numeric value published Treat the map as unquantified until your own clean-world measurement establishes a baseline.
Lost Colony Not published No numeric value published Use observation and stress testing rather than an invented estimate.

GiB is the binary unit commonly used by operating systems for memory. A range such as 8–10 GiB means usage can vary inside that interval even before players, construction or modifications are introduced. The Center’s 10.5–12 GiB upper range is the highest numeric empty-map value in this comparison.

What the map figures include—and what they leave out

These measurements represent a new world on default settings with no players connected. They capture the cost of loading the map and starting the server, not the complete cost of running a community. A production allocation must also cover the host operating system, the server process’s temporary peaks and every service sharing the machine.

Why an empty map is only a floor

RAM rises as players connect and as a save accumulates structures, tamed and wild creatures, inventories, containers and other persistent state. World age matters because a long-running save contains more history than a newly generated one. Configuration changes can alter the amount of state the server must maintain, and mods can add their own assets and runtime data. Memory can also fluctuate while creatures respawn, so a reading taken at one quiet moment is not a guaranteed maximum.

How to interpret a range

Start planning with the high end of the published range, not the low end. Then add room for the operating system and your expected activity. The correct final number is the observed peak working set during representative play, plus enough reserve to prevent the host from swapping or terminating the process. Because player counts, build density and mod lists differ, no single universal “RAM per player” number can be derived from the empty-world table.

CPU requirements for an ASA dedicated server

The ARK Official Community Wiki recommends four logical CPU cores for each ASA server instance. It also notes that gameplay, apart from physics, largely runs on one thread. That makes per-core performance more important than simply counting a large number of slow cores.

What to prioritize when choosing a processor

  • Strong single-thread performance: prioritize a recent architecture and high per-core speed because the main gameplay workload can concentrate on one thread.
  • At least four logical cores per instance: this is the published recommendation for one server process, not a guarantee that four total cores will comfortably host several maps and unrelated services.
  • Additional capacity for concurrency: if several maps run at once, leave CPU time for each process, physics work, saving, networking and the host operating system.
  • Consistent sustained performance: a processor that throttles under continuous load can produce worse gameplay than a nominally faster chip that maintains its speed.

CPU saturation and RAM exhaustion cause different symptoms. A processor that is overloaded can produce tick-rate or latency problems while memory remains available; a host that runs out of RAM may swap, stall saves or stop the server. Monitor both rather than treating memory capacity as a substitute for CPU capacity.

Storage: installation, saves and SSD performance

One ASA server installation is about 11 GiB. That is the program installation only. Reserve additional capacity for world saves, player and tribe profiles, logs, updates and mods. Each additional map or instance brings another installation or content set and its own persistent data.

Why an SSD is not optional

Steam’s client requirements explicitly state “SSD Required.” A dedicated server also benefits from solid-state storage because it repeatedly reads game assets and writes saves and logs. An NVMe SSD is the practical choice when the host will run several instances or a sizable mod set, provided the rest of the system can use its performance.

How much drive space to buy

Do not size the drive to the 11 GiB installation figure or to the 180 GB client-storage figure in isolation. The 180 GB figure is a client requirement, not a complete dedicated-server allocation rule. Count every installed instance, then leave room for save-history copies, logs, patches and mod updates. A “1TB NVMe SSD” is a sensible purchase target when you want operational room for multiple maps and retained backups; it is not stated as a minimum requirement by the map table.

Dedicated-server sizing versus the Steam client baseline

Steam lists Windows 10 or 11, a Ryzen 5 2600X or Core i7-6800K, 16 GB of RAM minimum, 32 GB recommended, DirectX 12, broadband internet and 180 GB of storage for the ARK: Survival Ascended client, with an SSD required. Those specifications describe running the game client. They do not account for the memory and CPU overhead of a persistent dedicated server, much less several maps in a cluster.

  • Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users

The distinction matters in both directions. A machine that meets the client’s 16 GB minimum may still be unsuitable for a busy server, while a headless server does not need a graphics card simply because the client does. Treat the client list as a reference for the game software, not as a server-sizing calculator.

Planning one map

For one lightly populated map, use the map’s published empty-world range as the baseline and select the upper endpoint. Add memory for the host operating system, the server’s normal background services, your mod list and expected player activity. The result should be a capacity plan, not a promise that the map will never exceed it.

Published maps

The Island, The Center, Scorched Earth, Aberration and Extinction have numeric starting points. The Center should be treated as the most demanding of these at startup because its published empty-world range reaches 12 GiB. The lower ranges for Extinction and Scorched Earth can reduce the initial footprint, but they do not make a heavily built or heavily modded world inherently small.

Maps without numeric values

Ragnarok, Astraeos and Lost Colony have no numeric ASA RAM value in the cited table. Do not copy The Island’s figure, average the other maps or present a guessed number as a requirement. Launch a clean instance, record its idle and active working set, then repeat the measurement with the intended settings and mods. Until you have that observation, reserve more capacity than you would for a known low-footprint map.

Running several maps in a cluster

When maps run concurrently, each server process needs its own working set. Add the observed working set of every map, then reserve additional RAM for the operating system, cluster services, mods, saves and player activity. Do not multiply a single map’s empty-world number and call the result a safe cluster allocation.

Cluster situation How to size it Common mistake
One lightly populated map Upper end of that map’s published or measured baseline, plus host and workload headroom. Installing exactly the empty-map amount and leaving no reserve.
Two or more published maps Add each map’s measured working set; keep reserve for simultaneous activity and save operations. Using only the largest map’s value for the whole machine.
A cluster including maps without numeric values Measure the instances separately and size for the highest combined observed load. Assigning an invented value because the official table is incomplete.
Heavily modded or mature saves Use production observations during busy periods and retain extra disk space for updates and backups. Relying on a new-world test after the community has built extensively.

CPU planning follows the same additive principle, but with an important caveat: the main gameplay path can be concentrated on one thread. Several maps therefore need both enough total logical cores and strong per-core performance. Memory and CPU should be validated together under the same workload.

A practical capacity-planning procedure

  1. List the instances. Write down every map that will run at the same time, including test or event servers that may be started temporarily.
  2. Assign a baseline. For a published map, record the stated empty-world range and begin at its upper end. For Ragnarok, Astraeos or Lost Colony, label the baseline as unknown until measured.
  3. Separate host overhead. Reserve RAM for the operating system, monitoring, backup jobs and other services instead of treating all installed memory as available to ASA.
  4. Describe the workload. Record expected concurrent players, whether the save is new or mature, build density, creature population, storage usage, configuration changes and every mod.
  5. Test representative activity. Observe the server while players travel, build, use storage, encounter creature respawns and trigger saves. A quiet menu or freshly booted world is not representative.
  6. Watch peaks, not just averages. Record the highest working-set and CPU readings during the test window. Fluctuations during respawn and saving are part of the capacity decision.
  7. Leave operational reserve. Keep enough unused RAM and disk space for updates, logs, save copies and short-lived peaks. If the host begins swapping or the server process is killed, the allocation is too tight.
  8. Recheck after changes. New mods, a larger community, a mature save or another cluster map changes the workload; repeat the observation instead of assuming the old number still applies.

Failure modes and corrective actions

The server starts but the machine becomes unresponsive

This usually indicates that the host has little memory left for the operating system or has begun swapping. Stop nonessential services, reduce concurrent instances or move to a host with more RAM. Do not interpret a successful boot as proof that the allocation is sufficient.

Performance degrades as a save ages

A mature world contains more structures, creatures, inventories and player data than a new world. Compare current peak memory with the original baseline, archive unnecessary saves and increase the available RAM if the working set is approaching the host limit.

A mod update causes crashes or sudden growth

Record the mod version and the time memory or CPU changed. Test the update on a separate instance when possible, confirm that the server and clients use compatible content, and keep enough disk space for the old and new files during rollback. A map’s empty-world figure cannot predict a mod’s runtime footprint.

Several maps compete for CPU time

Check per-instance CPU use rather than only the machine-wide average. Because much gameplay work favors a single thread, one busy instance can suffer even when other cores look idle. Move instances to a faster processor, reduce simultaneous load or separate the maps across hosts.

The drive fills during updates or backups

The 11 GiB installation estimate excludes saves, profiles, logs, updates and mods. Keep free space for temporary update files and retained backups, and place high-write data on the SSD rather than a nearly full volume.

Why requirements can change over time

Studio Wildcard describes ASA as being developed on the latest version of Unreal Engine 5 and says that, as with ARK: Survival Evolved early in its engine lifecycle, new technology and systems are still being explored and refined. In the developer statement on Steam, the studio says it must “ensure that we’ve worked through all the kinks.” That context explains why a measured requirement can shift after game, map or mod updates. Revalidate a production host after major patches instead of treating a 2026 estimate as permanent.

Recommended 2026 baseline

  • Memory: begin with the upper end of the selected map’s published or measured empty-world range, then add explicit reserve for the host and workload.
  • Processor: provide at least four logical cores per ASA instance and favor high single-thread performance.
  • Storage: use an SSD, preferably NVMe, and budget beyond the approximately 11 GiB installation for saves, profiles, logs, updates and mods.
  • Clusters: add the observed working set of every concurrently running map; measure maps listed as not published rather than guessing.
  • Validation: size from peak readings during representative play, not from an empty boot or the Steam client minimum.
