The June 5, 2024 launch of The Center Ascended also introduced Pyromane, the first paid creature in ARK: Survival Ascended’s Fantastic Tames series. Players objected to buying a single creature and questioned whether paid access could create an advantage in PvP. Those launch discussions document criticism, but do not show how widespread it was or establish that Pyromane was overpowered.
What launched with The Center
Studio Wildcard announced The Center Ascended and Pyromane on June 5, 2024. The studio described Fantastic Tames as paid DLC adding fantasy creatures to ARK: Survival Ascended. It said Pyromane would be available on official maps other than The Island and could be transferred. The official launch announcement called the solo-creature sale new territory for the franchise and said the series would help support the game’s development and operation.
That combination made Pyromane more than a new creature release: it was also a test of a paid-content model in which a single creature was sold separately.
Why players objected
A paid creature set a new monetization precedent
Some players in the official launch thread objected to paying separately for one creature. The dispute was not simply about whether the DLC was optional; it was also about whether selling individual creatures should become a normal part of the game’s business model. Studio Wildcard’s stated rationale was that Fantastic Tames would help fund development and operation, while critics focused on the implications of charging for creature access.

- ARK: Survival Ascended has completely recreated and redesigned the artwork and worlds of ARK to take advantage of the latest in videogame technology, Unreal Engine 5, using high-end graphics features such as fully dynamic Global Illumination (“Lumen”), so that light bounces realistically of off surfaces and provides realistic reflections, and advanced mesh streaming (“Nanite”) of hundreds of millions of triangles for extreme detail.
- Advanced new physics systems such as dynamic water so that every creature creates waves, ripples, splashes, and bubbles as they move through fluids, and fully interactive physical foliage where every blade of grass, bush, and tree reacts to characters, explosions, projectiles, and physics objects.
- ARK: Survival Ascended includes access to all of ARK’s worlds, including Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, ARK Genesis Part 1, ARK Genesis Part 2, and more. The Island is released now, with the subsequent expansion worlds to be added at no additional cost on a regular basis.

PvP players raised fairness concerns
Players also questioned whether buying Pyromane might confer an advantage in player-versus-player play. A launch-era Reddit discussion, titled “Can we all agree to just….not buy the pyromane dlc?”, shows one example of the opposition; commenters also debated access and competitive fairness. The phrase “p2w” appeared in criticism in the official thread. These are examples of individual player views, not proof that the creature was unbalanced or that most players agreed.
The two complaints are related but distinct: one concerns the precedent of selling a creature on its own, and the other concerns whether paid access could affect competition. The discussions establish that both concerns were voiced, not how often they were held or how Pyromane performed in actual competitive play.

How Studio Wildcard responded
In its June 8, 2024 community update, Studio Wildcard said it had released The Center and Pyromane, thanked players for feedback, and said fixes were on the way. The update does not specify which fixes concerned Pyromane or report their eventual outcomes. It therefore records a launch-week response, not a resolution of the monetization or balance debate. The launch backlash is best understood as a dispute over both precedent and potential competitive access. Studio Wildcard presented Fantastic Tames as a way to support the game; some players questioned whether a paid creature belonged in the game, particularly if it could affect PvP. The cited posts do not settle that debate: they capture individual reactions, while the publisher’s announcements explain its position. Neither establishes the scale of player opposition or Pyromane’s competitive impact.
