Avoid deep water and ambitious exploration until you understand the survival loop. Save serious taming for around level 20, then choose a manageable creature rather than chasing the most impressive dinosaur you see.

Confirm which ARK you are playing
ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended are separate releases. Ascended is a remastered version, and advice written for one game can describe different visuals, systems or progression from the other. Before following a guide, check the game title in your launcher and the server or map you selected. Numeric advice such as an approximate taming level should be treated as version- and server-dependent, especially when settings have been changed.

This guide focuses on the first hours of Survival Evolved. The broad priorities also help in other versions, but do not assume that every engram, creature location or balance value is identical.
Where to spawn and what to do immediately
Choose a southern beach on a standard beginner map
Several beginner guides direct new players toward the southern beaches, where early threats are generally described as less severe and basic resources are easy to find. On a standard version of The Island, select a southern spawn option when the game offers one. Community servers can change spawn behavior, and other maps may use different names, so use the safest beach-like starting area available rather than traveling far to find a particular landmark.

Stay close to that starting area for your first few levels. The goal is to learn gathering, crafting, inventory management and respawning before you add cliffs, caves, deep water or unfamiliar predators to the problem. A short, controlled loop between your shelter and nearby resources is more useful than a long expedition that ends with a lost inventory.
Do not walk into deep water
Water that looks calm at the shoreline can become extremely dangerous once it gets deep. Early characters lack the equipment, levels and reliable escape options needed for an underwater fight. Treat the edge of the water as a resource boundary, not an invitation to explore. Gather on land, cross only shallow sections when you can see the route, and return to shore as soon as you notice the bottom dropping away.

Look around the proposed building spot before opening your inventory. One beginner warning specifically calls out roaming Spinos near areas that otherwise appear suitable for low-level players. You do not need to identify every creature perfectly; you do need to notice whether a large aggressive animal is patrolling between you and the water or resources. If the area is unsafe, move a short distance along the beach instead of trying to fight or outrun a threat with starter equipment.
Your first gathering and crafting loop
Collect the first materials by hand
At spawn, pick up a loose stone. Punch trees and collect fallen wood for the initial supply of materials. This opening loop is deliberately slow but safe: you can gather without leaving the beach, and each trip gives you enough material to unlock the next useful tool. Keep an eye on your inventory weight while collecting; carrying everything you see can leave you unable to move when you most need to retreat.
Craft a stone pickaxe first
Your first important tool should be a stone pickaxe. It lets you obtain flint, which is needed for early weapons and armor, and it makes further gathering more efficient. Do not spend the opening minutes chasing advanced blueprints or distant resource nodes. Craft the basic pickaxe as soon as its recipe is available, then use it on nearby suitable resources while remaining within sight of your spawn area.

Make the hatchet next
Follow the pickaxe with a stone hatchet. Beginner guidance consistently treats these two tools as early investments: the pickaxe establishes flint access, and the hatchet gives you a second way to gather common building materials. Carry both rather than relying on one tool for every job. If you die, replacing a basic tool set is far easier than recovering a large expedition’s worth of materials.

Use a repeatable route
Build a short circuit that starts at your intended shelter site, passes the nearest safe trees and loose stones, and returns to the same location. Repeating this path teaches you where resources respawn on your server and keeps your belongings close to a known safe point. When a creature appears, abandon the gathering run and return to the shelter area; early progress comes from surviving several small trips, not from winning one risky encounter.
Build a respawn point before you need one
Place a simple bed early
A simple bed gives you a dependable respawn point if a predator, fall or failed water crossing kills you. Place it inside your first shelter or in the safest protected spot you can prepare. Do this before exploring away from the beach. The bed is valuable even when your structure is temporary because it turns a death from a complete reset into a manageable setback.
Build a thatch shelter first
Gather thatch and put up a small thatch hut rather than waiting for enough materials for a permanent base. The first shelter’s job is to give you a place for the bed, protect your working area and mark your home. Keep the footprint compact so you can finish it quickly and replace pieces without wasting scarce early resources.
Upgrade to wood when the basic loop is stable
Once you can gather safely and return with a full inventory, replace the temporary thatch with wood. Thatch is the practical first hut material because it is quick to assemble; wood is the sensible upgrade for a more durable early base. Build in a shady location near water, but not so close that a dangerous shoreline or wandering creature blocks your exits. Leave clear paths on at least two sides so you can see approaching threats and retreat toward open ground.

How to survive the first night
Finish the minimum before darkness
- Secure the bed. Place the simple bed inside your thatch shelter and confirm that it is usable as your respawn point.
- Close the basic shelter. Use thatch to create a small enclosed space rather than spreading resources across a large build.
- Keep tools together. Store or carry your stone pickaxe and hatchet so a death does not leave you searching for the materials to restart.
- Stop expanding. Once the shelter and bed are in place, remain nearby instead of beginning a long resource run in poor visibility.
The first night is for stabilizing your position, not proving that you can cross the map. If a run becomes uncertain, turn back while the shelter is still easy to find. Learning the rhythm of safe gathering during daylight is a better investment than gambling your tools and inventory in unfamiliar terrain.
Use the darkness to plan
When you are safely inside, sort the materials you have collected, decide where the wood upgrade will go and identify the next nearby resource route. Avoid treating a quiet night as proof that the surrounding area is safe; the threat that was not visible in the dark can still be present when you step outside.
Spend early levels for survival, not style
Beginner advice emphasizes food, health and weight as the most useful early statistics. Food supports continued activity, health gives you a larger margin when something goes wrong, and weight lets you bring back enough stone, wood and thatch to craft without making repeated dangerous trips.
- Food: prioritize it when hunger repeatedly interrupts gathering or travel.
- Health: invest here when a single hit or environmental mistake is ending your runs.
- Weight: choose it when you are returning home with half a haul because your inventory is full.
These are practical priorities rather than a universal character build. If your server has unusual rates or you are playing with a group that carries most materials, the balance can change. The important principle is to spend points on the problem that is stopping your next safe action.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen to start taming
Wait until roughly level 20
Several beginner guides place the first serious taming attempt at about level 20. Treat that as an approximate milestone, not a promise that every server unlocks the same content at exactly the same level. Before attempting it, make sure you already have a bed, a shelter and enough spare resources to recover from a failed try. Taming should extend a stable routine, not replace one.

The basic knockout-and-feed process
The commonly described method is to knock a creature unconscious with tranquilizing arrows or darts, then keep it unconscious while feeding its preferred food. The exact food, ammunition availability and effectiveness depend on the creature and the settings of your version or server. Do not begin with a dangerous animal simply because it is nearby: a failed knockout can cost your tools, food and the creature you hoped to claim.
Choose a manageable first target
Small, low-level, non-aggressive creatures are repeatedly recommended as a way to gain experience and learn the process with less risk. The Trike is also suggested as a good first tame by one set of beginner advice. These recommendations are not a single community consensus, so treat the choice as a trade-off between safety, difficulty and usefulness.
| Candidate or approach | How beginner sources characterize it | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Low-level, non-aggressive creature | Recommended for safer early learning and faster level gains | Best when you are learning the knockout and feeding routine |
| Trike | Suggested as a good first tame by one guide | Consider after you can protect the area and sustain the attempt |
| Pteranodon | Suggested by one guide for mobility | Choose this goal when movement matters more than the simplest first lesson |
| Giganotosaurus | Rated demanding by one guide | Not a sensible beginner target merely because it is powerful |
| Managarmr | Rated excellent for beginners by another guide | An individual opinion, not a universal first-tame rule |
| Carnaby’s | Named alongside the Trike by one guide | Follow a creature-specific guide for its food and knockout requirements |
The disagreement matters: “best first tame” depends on whether you value a forgiving learning experience, transport or a particular utility. Start with the creature you can safely isolate near your base, not the one with the most dramatic reputation.
Common first-hour mistakes and fixes
You ran into deep water
Symptom: you are far from shore with limited stamina, supplies or escape options. Fix: turn toward the nearest visible land, abandon carried resources if necessary, and avoid repeating the route until you have a more secure character and equipment. The loss of a small haul is preferable to losing your bed location and every tool.
You built too far from the spawn beach
Symptom: every death becomes a long trek before you can recover your inventory. Fix: place the bed and first shelter close to the starting area, then expand your range gradually. You can build a better base later; early convenience is worth more than an ambitious view.

You skipped the bed
Symptom: one death sends you back to an uncontrolled spawn and separates you from your materials. Fix: make the simple bed an early construction priority, before exploration and before taming.
You crafted only one tool
Symptom: gathering flint, wood and thatch is slow, or you cannot collect the material needed for the next craft efficiently. Fix: craft the stone pickaxe first and the hatchet immediately afterward. Keep both available during every short gathering run.
Recommended Free Tools
You tried to tame too soon
Symptom: you lack tranquilizing ammunition, food, a safe place to watch the unconscious animal or a recovery plan if it wakes. Fix: return to gathering and shelter building, then revisit taming around the approximate level-20 milestone when your base and respawn point are established.
A large predator appeared near your hut
Symptom: an aggressive creature, including a possible Spino, is patrolling between your shelter and the resources you need. Fix: stop harvesting, keep the creature in sight from a safe distance and relocate the small camp along the beach if necessary. Do not make the base permanent until the immediate route is safe.
A practical first-session checklist
- Choose a southern beach or the safest comparable starting area.
- Stay near the spawn point while learning the basics.
- Pick up a stone and gather trees or fallen wood by hand.
- Craft a stone pickaxe, then a hatchet.
- Collect thatch for a compact first shelter.
- Place a simple bed inside the shelter.
- Build near water in a shady spot without blocking your escape route.
- Scan for roaming threats before each gathering run.
- Spend early points on food, health and weight according to the problem you are experiencing.
- Upgrade the thatch structure to wood after your gathering loop is reliable.
- Delay serious taming until about level 20 and begin with a manageable creature.
- Check that your guide matches Survival Evolved, not Survival Ascended, before trusting version-specific numbers.
What progress should look like
A successful opening is not measured by how far you travel or how large a dinosaur you claim. It is measured by whether you can die and recover, gather basic materials without crossing dangerous terrain, and return to a known shelter with the tools to continue. The southern beach, simple bed, thatch hut, pickaxe and hatchet form a small safety network. Once that network works, the wood upgrade and first tame become deliberate choices instead of desperate reactions.
Keep the pace slow enough to notice what caused each setback. The early game teaches the mechanics that remain important later: reading the terrain, recognizing threats, managing carrying capacity and deciding when a resource is worth the risk. Hardcore zones and ambitious creatures can wait until those decisions feel routine.
