ARK: Survival Evolved is worth considering if you want a sprawling survival sandbox built around gathering, crafting, base-building, exploration and taming dinosaurs—and you are comfortable with a game that can be rough and demanding. It is a less convincing fit if you want a polished, low-friction experience. Review scores reflect that split: critics are mixed, while Steam user reviews are more positive.
What kind of game is ARK: Survival Evolved?
You begin stranded on an island and must hunt, harvest resources, craft equipment, grow crops, research technologies and build shelter. Its defining loop is taming prehistoric creatures: capture them, give them commands and breed them as you develop your capabilities and home base. The game supports cooperative and competitive multiplayer, where other players can become allies or threats. Steam describes the game and its features.
That loop has room to expand well beyond basic survival. You can explore, build a tribe and take on the longer-term project of developing a base and creature roster. The appeal is the stories and goals players create from those systems, rather than a tightly guided, low-friction progression.
What do the reviews say?
As of October 8, 2026, Metacritic lists a 70 Metascore from 18 critic reviews, classed as “Mixed or Average.” Seven reviews (39%) are positive, 11 (61%) are mixed and none are negative. Its user score is 6.5 from 1,049 ratings, with 49% positive, 27% mixed and 24% negative.
Steam’s separate review system was more favorable on the same date: its listing showed 85% positive from 1,942 reviews in the last 30 days and 80% positive from 256,547 English-language reviews overall. These are dated snapshots, not fixed scores, and the two platforms use different review pools and systems.
The split is consistent with the game’s tradeoff: critics have praised the satisfying, memorable moments that emerge from its concept while also pointing to rough edges, tedium and bugs. Games Master UK’s 2017 review captured the appeal as a game that “will leave you with a real sense of satisfaction”; USgamer’s 50-point review described “a game full of rough edges” with “some amazing moments.” Those lines are individual critics’ views, not a universal verdict.

Who is likely to enjoy it—and who may not?
It may suit you if
- You enjoy open-ended survival games where gathering, crafting and building are ongoing goals.
- Taming, breeding and using dinosaurs is a major part of the appeal for you.
- You like setting your own objectives, whether that means expanding a base, exploring or playing with a tribe.
- You are willing to tolerate some friction in exchange for the possibility of memorable, player-created stories.
Consider another game if
- You expect consistently polished systems and a smooth experience with little troubleshooting.
- You dislike repetitive resource gathering or long-term survival progression.
- You want a single, clearly guided path rather than a sandbox whose goals you largely set yourself.
How does multiplayer affect the experience?
Multiplayer is central to the game’s pitch: Steam describes players teaming up with or preying on one another. But solo play, a session hosted by another player and a persistent server can feel quite different in how much coordination and ongoing commitment they involve. Choose based on whether you want to manage a world with friends, join a larger multiplayer environment or play on your own; check the current options and requirements for your platform before setting up a session.
How much game is there, and what does the DLC add?
Survival Evolved has a substantial expansion catalogue. Snail Games’ 2025 annual filing names five expansion packs: Scorched Earth (September 2016), Aberration (December 2017), Extinction (November 2018), and Genesis Part 1 and Genesis Part 2 (February 2020 and June 2021). Steam also lists free map downloads, bundles and other digital products, including a Genesis Season Pass.

Those listings and bundle contents can change. Before buying, check the live store page for your platform to confirm the price, which maps or expansions are included, and whether you need the base game or another pack. You do not need to assume every expansion is required to start; decide how much of the additional content interests you and compare the current offers.
Should you choose Survival Evolved or Survival Ascended?
They are distinct versions, not just different names for the same release. Snail Games describes ARK: Survival Ascended as an Unreal Engine 5 reworking with updated visuals, new physics systems, quality-of-life changes, cross-platform multiplayer and modding capabilities. That feature list does not establish a universal winner or a current performance ranking.

What technical caveats should buyers know?
The game’s history includes technical problems, but dated reports should not be mistaken for a live status report. On July 22, 2025, PC Gamer reported player complaints around the Aquatica release involving performance, mods, server settings and configuration files. The article quoted a Snail Games statement saying its priority was to fix a live-version engine issue that caused mods to crash and that the issue was “proving to be complex.” That reporting documents the situation at the time; it does not establish whether the problems remain today. Check current official updates and recent player reports for your platform if a particular mod or server setup is essential.
Steam’s listing showed Windows minimum requirements of 8 GB RAM and 60 GB storage, and noted broadband internet for multiplayer. These are the listing’s stated minimums, not a promise of smooth performance. Requirements differ by platform and may change, so consult the current listing for the version you plan to play.
