For a new Arknights: Endfield account, the safest opening squad is the story-provided Endministrator, Perlica and Chen Qianyu, plus one additional operator chosen to complement their damage, Stagger pressure or survivability. You do not need early pulls to make this core work. Build the party around the game’s central loop: conserve shared skill resources, fill an enemy’s Stagger/imbalance meter, then spend abilities during the vulnerability window for a Finisher or execution attack.
At the same time, advance the story until the Automated Industry Complex (AIC) unlocks. Automate mining, route ore through processing machines and belts, and keep the power network supplied. The factory is not separate flavor: its production chain supplies gear and other advancement materials that let the combat team progress.

The best starting team and what to add in the fourth slot
Endfield is a free-to-play, real-time 3D RPG with four-operator squads and a factory-management layer. The story gives every new account a functional three-operator core, so the early objective is concentration rather than collection.

|---|---|---|---|
| Core damage and control | Endministrator | Provides a dependable frontline presence and helps the team apply pressure while you learn the real-time controls. | Level with the rest of the core; do not leave the player-controlled character behind. |
| Core support | Perlica | Adds another source of skill use and elemental interaction to the starter rotation. | Keep her level close to the other core members so shared-resource windows are not wasted. |
| Core damage and Stagger pressure | Chen Qianyu | Helps the party build imbalance toward the vulnerability window. | Prioritize the same level-and-skill track as the other two rather than spreading materials across the roster. |
| Flex slot | Your best available recruit | Cover a missing element, add survivability, or improve Stagger and gauge efficiency. | Choose a role that strengthens the existing loop; a higher rarity alone is not proof of a better early fit. |
BannerDex described the handout succinctly in its 2026 beginner guide: “The story hands you a working squad without any pulls.” That makes the three named characters the appropriate first investment even if your account immediately receives additional recruits. Add the fourth member when one becomes available, but avoid leveling several alternatives at once. A small, finished squad clears more reliably than a large roster of underpowered characters.
How to judge the fourth operator
There is no reliable, current universal answer that makes one newly released character the best fourth slot for every account. Evaluate candidates against the team you already have:
#1 Best Overall

- Stagger contribution: Does the operator help fill the imbalance meter quickly or exploit the vulnerable state?
- Element coverage: Does the character add a useful Physical or Arts element without breaking your rotation?
- Arts-Reaction compatibility: Can the operator create or extend reactions with the elements already present?
- Skill-gauge efficiency: Can the character contribute without consuming every shared gauge before Stagger?
- Survivability: If a stage punishes mistakes, healing, mitigation or safer control can be worth more than a small theoretical damage increase.
- Material cost: A recruit that reaches useful levels and skills with your current stock is often better now than a stronger unit that remains unbuilt.
These are the practical comparison axes for an opening team: Stagger exploitation, elemental coverage, shared-gauge economy, survival and the cost of bringing the group online. They also give you a way to reassess the squad after each story reward without blindly following a tier list.
Combat mechanics that determine an early build
Four operators, one active character
Combat takes place in real time with four operators in the party. You directly control one character while the other three act on their own, and you can manually trigger abilities for any member. Because the squad shares skill resources, the important decision is not simply which ability does the largest single hit; it is when the whole team spends its limited gauges.
Save the gauges for the vulnerability window
AllThings. How describes three shared skill gauges. Spending all three as soon as they fill can produce a burst of damage, but it often leaves the enemy standing and the team empty when the most valuable opening appears. A safer sequence is:
- Use normal attacks and heavier hits to build pressure rather than immediately emptying the gauges.
- Use Final Strikes and other high-impact attacks to fill the enemy’s Stagger or imbalance meter.
- When the meter breaks, recognize the vulnerability window. A Staggered enemy takes increased damage.
- Spend the saved skills while the target is vulnerable, then use the available execution or Finisher opportunity.
- Return to basic attacks and rebuild the meter instead of forcing a second burst before resources recover.
The beginner guide’s distinctive payoff is that a basic attack against a Staggered target becomes a high-impact Finisher and restores skill points. That refund is why disciplined timing beats constant button pressing: the vulnerability window can both end the current threat and refill the resources needed for the next cycle. AllThings. How summarizes the same rhythm as building imbalance, coordinating skills, taking the execution opportunity and rebuilding the meter.

Physical damage, Arts and reactions
Damage is divided between Physical and four Arts elements: Heat, Electric, Cryo and Nature. Element choice matters because Arts elements can interact through Arts Reactions. In the opening chapters, keep a coherent four-person group with complementary elements rather than assigning every new recruit a few levels. The exact reaction value depends on the encounter and your available operators, but the team-building rule is stable: select elements that can participate in the same rotation and still leave enough gauge for the Stagger window.
Build priorities: levels first, skills second, weapons third
Early materials are limited, so use a strict order instead of upgrading whatever menu happens to be open.
Recommended Free Tools
- Operator levels: Raise Endministrator, Perlica, Chen Qianyu and your chosen fourth member together. Levels improve the basic statistics that affect every attack, including the attacks used while you wait for Stagger.
- Skills: Upgrade the abilities that contribute to imbalance, the vulnerability burst or team survival. Skills are the second priority because the shared-gauge rotation depends on their impact, but they are less valuable when the underlying operator is underleveled.
- Weapons: Improve weapons after the core levels and key skills are in place. A weapon upgrade cannot repair a team that dies before it reaches Stagger or spends its gauges at the wrong time.
This order comes from the cited BannerDex beginner guidance. Apply it to a small core, not to every operator in your archive. Before committing materials, ask whether the character is in the active four, whether the upgrade changes the Stagger cycle or survival, and whether the next story objective actually requires it.
A practical early spending rule
- Keep the four active operators within a similar level range.
- Finish the most useful skills on the core before experimenting with side characters.
- Delay weapon specialization until the team’s rotation functions without it.
- Reserve a small material buffer for a story reward or recruit who fills a clear role.
- Do not mistake rarity, banner position or a damage screenshot for an account-wide early-game priority.
Story and factory progression in the first hours
The most efficient opening is not “combat first, factory later.” Push the story until the AIC becomes available, then establish a basic automated line before spending long sessions gathering manually.
- Clear the opening story objectives. Use the three-member starter core to learn movement, manual ability timing and the Stagger cycle. Add the fourth operator when the game makes one available.
- Unlock the AIC. The factory unlock is a progression milestone, not optional decoration. It gives you a route to materials that support both equipment and character advancement.
- Automate a mining node. Place electric mining rigs and connect the output so ore enters the production network without repeated manual collection.
- Process the ore. Send raw material through the appropriate processing facilities before it reaches downstream production. A belt that carries unrefined input to the wrong machine does not count as automation.
- Stabilize electricity. Build and connect Thermal Banks or other available power infrastructure so the rigs and processors remain supplied while you are exploring.
- Route outputs. Use belts and the correct input/output connections to move processed goods toward the PAC and Depot, where production and storage support your wider progression.
- Return to exploration. Once the line runs unattended, continue fighting and exploring while it produces. Revisit the AIC whenever a new material, machine or regional requirement appears.
AllThings. How reports a 50:50 target between the RPG and factory elements. That is a stated design goal, not a measured promise that every player will spend exactly half of their time in each mode. In practical terms, it means the factory should be developed alongside combat rather than postponed until the story forces you back to it.

How to make the AIC support your combat roster
Mining, belts and processing
The AIC is a working production chain: electric mining rigs harvest ore, processing machines refine it, and transport belts move inputs and outputs between stations. Start with the shortest useful route. Every additional junction adds another place for an input or output to be misrouted, so expand only when the current line is stable. Labeling or visually separating raw ore, processed material and finished goods can save more time than rebuilding a decorative layout later.
Remote mining nodes can be connected with ziplines, according to AllThings.How. Use that option when a valuable node is outside the compact base area, but verify that the connection actually feeds the intended machine. A mine that is active but disconnected from processing still leaves you dependent on manual gathering.
Power is a throughput limit
Electricity distribution is one of the main constraints alongside input and output routing. A belt network can look complete while the machines sit idle because the power network is undersupplied. Add Thermal Banks and the other available power infrastructure before increasing the number of mining rigs or processors. When production stops, check power availability before replacing belts or spending materials on a new machine.
Send production to the progression endpoints
Route finished goods toward the PAC and Depot. The factory’s value is measured by what it delivers to those progression endpoints, not by the number of machines placed. Gear and other advancement materials come through the production chain, which is why an automated line directly improves the combat build over time.

Blueprints and regional layouts
Blueprints are useful when a proven arrangement saves construction time, but learn the routing logic before relying on them. A layout may need to change when the available node, power requirement or output location changes. Valley IV and Wuling have distinct factory setups, currencies and development levels, so a layout that works in one region should not be treated as universally optimal. Build a compact regional solution first, then adapt it when the next area introduces different constraints.
Resource planning, stamina and account pacing
BannerDex’s 2026 figures provide a useful planning reference, but they are version-sensitive and should not be treated as permanent rules:
| Resource rule | Published figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| SP recovery | One SP every 7 minutes 12 seconds, or 200 SP per day | Spend natural regeneration on the active core and the materials that unblock the next level or skill milestone instead of starting many low-priority upgrades. |
| Sanity starting cap | 125 | Plan early farming around the initial cap; avoid letting the meter sit full when a useful upgrade stage is available. |
| Sanity cap at Authority Level 60 | 360 | The larger cap arrives with account progression, so later stockpiling rules do not apply unchanged to a new account. |
These numbers are reported for the 2026 version discussed by BannerDex. A patch can change recovery, caps or the value of a farming stage, so check the in-game display before committing to a long-term schedule. The important early principle is to convert stamina into a finished core and a functioning production line, not to spread it across every available upgrade screen.
What not to do in the opening chapters
Do not empty every gauge on the first target
If the enemy is close to Stagger, save enough skill resources to exploit the break. The extra damage and Finisher refund are usually worth more than an earlier, smaller burst.
Do not level the whole roster
Materials spent on characters outside the active four delay the levels and skills that make the starter loop reliable. Expand only when a recruit fills a documented elemental, Stagger or survival gap.
Do not build around an isolated element
An attractive single-element attack can underperform when it cannot participate in your team’s Arts-Reaction plan. Choose complementary elements and a rotation that still works when a stage does not favor one damage type.

Do not confuse a powered-down factory with a bad layout
Check electricity, machine input and machine output in that order. Mining rigs, processors and belts all need the right connection; replacing a belt will not fix an empty power network or an incorrect destination.
Do not assume one region’s blueprint fits another
Valley IV and Wuling differ in setups, currencies and development levels. Treat a blueprint as a starting pattern and adapt it to the current region’s nodes and progression requirements.
Why current tier lists need a version label
BannerDex’s cited beginner ranking was based on the earlier 1.5 picture and had not been re-read after the October 2026 Sanctuary of Ink update. It also did not rate Si or Argent Flow. That is a material limitation for anyone asking for the single best current character: newer operators cannot responsibly be presented as settled best-in-slot choices from that list.

A repeatable early-game routine
- Enter each new combat area with the four active operators at comparable levels.
- Identify the enemy’s Stagger or imbalance pattern before spending skills.
- Use normal attacks and heavy hits to approach the break, keeping shared gauges available.
- Trigger the coordinated burst during vulnerability, then take the Finisher or execution opportunity.
- After the fight, spend resources in the level-then-skill-then-weapon order.
- Check the AIC for idle rigs, missing power, blocked belts or full storage.
- Process the materials needed for the next combat upgrade while you explore.
- When a new operator arrives, compare its role, element, gauge demand, survivability and material cost against the current fourth slot.
This routine follows the game’s intended throughline: build a party loop that breaks enemies efficiently, then build an industrial loop that feeds the party with upgrades and resources. The factory simulation side is not a side quest; it is the supply system behind the combat build.
