To decide whether an Essence is worth keeping or improving, check both its grade and whether its stats match the skills on the weapon you plan to use.
What Essences do
Each Essence has stats that may improve specific weapon skills. Infusing a weapon with an Essence that has the right stats raises the corresponding skill level. The Arknights: Endfield tutorial puts it plainly: “Infusing a weapon with the right essence will upgrade the weapon skill level.”
An Essence is therefore not automatically useful just because it has a high grade. Compare its stats with the skills on the weapon you intend to use it with. The tutorial’s Essence Wishlist describes a perfect match as one that has all of the weapon’s stats.
How to get Essences
The official tutorial says enemies may drop Essences. For gold-quality Essence rewards, it points to Severe Energy Alluvium: clear the activity, then spend Sanity to claim the reward. Specific drop tables and reward amounts are not stated in the available tutorial information.

How grades affect an Essence
The community-maintained Endfield Talos Wiki lists five grades: Turbid, Stable, Clean, Pure, and Flawless. It describes higher-rarity Essences as having more stats at higher levels, and says Flawless Essences have three stats and can be improved through etching. The page also notes that Turbid Essences are not obtainable in-game; check the live client for current labels and availability.
When comparing two Essences for a weapon, use these checks:
Rank #2
- Skill-stat match: Does the Essence have stats that benefit the weapon’s skills?
- Grade: Does it offer stronger or more numerous relevant stats?
- Use case: Is this your chosen weapon for the character, or would the Essence fit another weapon better?
Players often describe the grades by color, such as purple versus gold. Color is a shorthand, not the decision itself: confirm the grade and read the listed stats in the game interface, since an Essence that matches a weapon’s skills can be more useful than a higher-grade item with a poor match.
What etching does—and what it costs
Etching is a way to improve an Essence’s stats by consuming another Essence. According to the official tutorial, a successful attempt raises a stat; a failed attempt yields Coolant Gel. Accumulating enough Coolant Gel can guarantee a successful attempt.

The tutorial does not establish current success odds or exact resource costs. The Talos Wiki lists approximate rates drawn from game files, but warns they may not reflect actual in-game rates, so those figures should not be treated as verified live odds.
When to keep, lock, or use an Essence
Keep a strong match for a weapon you use
Prioritize Essences whose stats line up with the skills on weapons you plan to equip. A high grade alone does not guarantee a useful match.

Lock a selected Flawless Essence
The official tutorial says selected Flawless Essences that perfectly match chosen weapons can be tagged and locked. Lock a keeper before sorting or spending other Essences, so it is less likely to be used accidentally.
Use spare Essences for etching only after checking them
Etching consumes another Essence, so check its stats and weapon fit before using it as material. Prydwen’s character progression guide, last updated 5 February 2026, also describes farming for desired stats and using unwanted Essences for etching; that is secondary guidance rather than an official rule.

Inventory and disassembly details
The Talos Wiki reports a 2,000-Essence storage limit and says unused Stable, Clean, and Pure Essences can be disassembled for regional Stock Bills, while Flawless Essences cannot be disassembled and are used in etching. These are community-wiki details, not confirmed here against the current game client, so verify the available actions and limits in your inventory before relying on them.
