There is no universally best launcher. Your choice depends on whether the server is temporary or always online, whether you need Linux or scripting, how many profiles you run, and how much networking and patching work you want to own.

Which Arma 3 server launcher should you choose?
| Option | Best for | Setup and control | Mod and profile handling | Operating-system fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official Arma 3 Launcher | A small group, testing, or a one-off private session | Fastest setup; little command-line work | Select mods in the Mods tab; no dedicated profile-management layer | Bohemia’s dedicated-server documentation covers Windows and modern Linux server operating systems | Limited automation for a persistent, multi-instance operation |
| Standalone server with SteamCMD | Long-running, scripted, or multi-instance servers | Most transparent; configuration files and startup parameters are explicit | Workshop updates and profiles are your responsibility, but can be automated with scripts | Works well for Windows or Linux deployments | More setup, firewall, update, and backup work |
| FASTER2 | Windows operators who want a graphical administration workflow | GUI around SteamCMD and server configuration | Profiles, cloning, presets, Workshop updates, missions, difficulty, and headless-client options | Windows-focused | Its cited project listing is a forum page, so verify current maintenance and downloads |
| Arma3Sync | A community or unit distributing a fixed repository | Repository-oriented launcher options and executable settings | Useful for a controlled community package rather than general-purpose server automation | Community tool; verify current compatibility | Available documentation is old, making it a legacy option |
| Managed hosting | Operators who prioritize convenience | Provider handles much of the machine, patching, and network setup | Many panels offer Workshop installation workflows; capabilities vary | Depends on the provider | Recurring fees and less infrastructure control; claims, locations, uptime, and pricing must be checked directly |
Think of the official launcher as a test bench, SteamCMD as the durable foundation, FASTER2 as a Windows administration layer, Arma3Sync as a repository workflow, and managed hosting as an operations service.
Plan the server before installing anything
Define the session type
- Temporary test: You can launch from the official client, validate a mod list, and shut the server down when finished.
- Persistent public or unit server: Use the standalone package so files, configuration, logs, updates, and restarts are independent of a player’s game client.
- Several communities or missions: Use separate profiles or instances. FASTER2 can help Windows users create and clone profiles; SteamCMD deployments can separate directories and configuration files manually.
- Repository-controlled unit: A fixed package distributed through a community repository may justify Arma3Sync, provided the current tool still works with your Arma 3 build.
Choose an operating system and hardware target
Bohemia Interactive’s dedicated-server documentation gives baseline guidance rather than an independent performance benchmark:
#1 Best Overall
- Player-driven story
- More than 70 weapons
- Over 100 different vehicles
- Massive online battles
- Game world of 225 square km
| Guidance | CPU | Memory | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 2.4 GHz dual-core | 2 GB RAM | 32 GB |
| Recommended | 3.5 GHz quad-core | 4 GB RAM | 32 GB SSD |
These figures describe the server software baseline. A large mod collection, several instances, many connected players, headless clients, operating-system services, and log retention can require more capacity. Keep the server files, configuration, and backups documented separately from the client installation.
Inventory the mod and DLC requirements
Write down every Workshop item, required dependency, server-side setting, and mission parameter before opening the server to players. The server’s mod list and each client’s loaded list must match in content and compatible versions. A missing item, stale download, or different version can produce a mod mismatch or missing-content error even when the server itself starts normally.

Fastest route: the official Arma 3 Launcher
This route is appropriate for a small private group or for validating a preset before building a persistent service. It keeps the setup close to the normal game launcher and avoids a separate administration layer.
- Start the Arma 3 Launcher.
- Open Parameters, then All Parameters, and select Host.
- Tick Server.
- Open the Mods tab and select the exact Workshop mods required by the mission.
- Review the selected parameters and press Play.
- Have one other player connect before expanding the group. Confirm that the mission loads, required content is present, and the mod signature/version state is consistent.
This is the quickest way to test whether a collection works. It is not a substitute for a carefully managed persistent deployment: the launcher does not by itself provide a durable update policy, multi-profile service layout, backup routine, or documented restart process.

Persistent deployment: standalone server with SteamCMD
Separate the server from the game client
Install the standalone Arma 3 server package with SteamCMD in its own directory. Keeping server files separate prevents client updates, personal presets, and local experiments from silently changing the production instance. Create a clear layout for the server executable, configuration files, Workshop content, missions, logs, and backups.
Make startup parameters explicit
Bohemia’s startup reference documents parameters including -server, -mpmissions, -port, -password, and -connect. Parameter names are case-insensitive. Values containing spaces must be quoted, so a mission or path with spaces needs quotation marks in the startup command.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep the complete startup line in version-controlled notes or an operations document. Record which profile it starts, the mission directory, network port, password policy, enabled mods, and any additional server settings. Do not copy a port number from an unrelated tutorial: port values are deployment choices that must be checked against the current server build, host firewall, and router configuration.
Build a repeatable Workshop update routine
- Record the Workshop item IDs and the intended mod order in the same document as the startup configuration.
- Run SteamCMD updates in a maintenance window, rather than while players are connected.
- Inspect the downloaded files and server logs after each update.
- Start a staging or test profile first when a mission is important to your group.
- Only then restart the public profile and announce the mod-set change to players.
SteamCMD gives you transparency and scriptability, but it does not decide your rollback policy. Preserve a known-good copy of the previous server files and configuration before a large Workshop or game update. If a new version breaks a mission, restore the documented version and investigate in staging rather than repeatedly changing the live instance.

Handle networking deliberately
An Internet-reachable server needs an appropriate host firewall rule and router port forwarding. The exact port is a configuration choice; verify it against the current server build and your hosting environment. Test from outside the local network, because a connection that works from the same machine does not prove that forwarding or the public firewall is correct.
- Allow the server executable through the host firewall only on the networks and ports you intend to expose.
- Forward the selected port to the machine running the instance, if a router is in front of it.
- Document which profile owns which port when running multiple instances.
- Remove obsolete forwarding rules when an instance is retired.
FASTER2: a Windows GUI for repeatable administration
FASTER2 is suited to a Windows operator who wants SteamCMD automation without maintaining every command manually. The project listing describes installation and updating of the Arma 3 server, Workshop mod installation and updates, Steam Guard or mobile-authentication support, importing presets from the Arma 3 Launcher, update checks, multiple server profiles, profile cloning, server configuration and command-line options, custom mission parameters and difficulty, headless-client support, and server-browser mod display.

Where it helps
- Repeatable profiles: Keep separate configurations for public play, testing, events, or different communities.
- Preset import: Start from a launcher mod preset instead of rebuilding a collection by hand.
- Routine updates: Use a visual workflow for SteamCMD and Workshop maintenance.
- Cloning: Copy a working profile before changing missions or mods.
- Advanced administration: Expose command-line options, mission parameters, difficulty settings, and headless-client configuration without hiding the underlying server model.
Important limitation
The available description is a forum project listing, not a guarantee of a current release, security posture, or maintenance schedule. Confirm the current download source, supported Arma 3 build, and recent activity before making FASTER2 the only way to operate a production server. Keep a manual SteamCMD procedure and copies of the configuration files so you can recover if the GUI stops working.
Arma3Sync: useful for a fixed community repository
An Arma3Sync installation guide documents launcher options for selecting the executable path, run parameters, performance controls, and additional parameters. That makes it relevant to a unit that publishes a known repository and wants members to launch the same package.

It is not the strongest default for a new, general-purpose server. The available documentation is old, so verify current compatibility with your Arma 3 version, Workshop workflow, authentication requirements, and operating system. If the repository is stable and the community already uses Arma3Sync, keep a documented fallback for downloading the same content and starting the server without it.

Managed hosting can remove much of the SteamCMD installation, patching, hardware maintenance, port-forwarding, and firewall work. Community reports describe panels with built-in Steam Workshop workflows, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a provider’s current price, uptime, location, support quality, or terms.
What to verify before paying
- Whether the plan supports the Arma 3 edition, mission type, mod count, and player capacity you need.
- How Workshop items are installed, updated, pinned, and removed.
- Whether you can download configuration files, logs, and backups.
- How many profiles or instances are included and whether each can use a separate port.
- What firewall, DDoS, restart, and scheduled-maintenance controls are provided.
- Where the server is located and whether that location suits your players.
- How cancellation, data export, and recovery work.
Choose this route when convenience matters more than owning the infrastructure. Verify every provider claim on the provider’s current site; do not treat an anecdotal community report as a service-level guarantee.

Keep server and client collections aligned
Publish one authoritative mod list with Workshop IDs, versions or update dates, load order where relevant, and required dependencies. Ask players to remove duplicate or obsolete copies before joining. When a mission changes its required content, update the server and the published list together.

Check DLC restrictions
Bohemia’s Spotrep warns that some DLC data, including Contact data, is not fully multiplayer compatible and recommends hosting it only for special use cases. Re-check DLC and mod compatibility before distributing a preset. A client owning a DLC does not automatically make every asset safe for a normal multiplayer mission.
Test a preset before publishing it
- Start a private test profile with the complete mod and DLC set.
- Connect with a clean client profile that has no extra experimental content.
- Load the intended mission and exercise its critical systems.
- Check server and client logs for missing dependencies, signature errors, or version mismatches.
- Publish the exact tested list and record the date of the test.
Operations checklist for a reliable server
- Keep software versions, Workshop item IDs, startup parameters, firewall rules, and router mappings in one maintained document.
- Back up configuration files, mission files, profiles, and a known-good mod state before updates.
- Use a staging profile for major game, DLC, or Workshop changes.
- Schedule updates when the server is empty and announce expected downtime.
- Review logs after every restart and after players report missing content.
- Limit administrative access and protect Steam authentication details.
- For multiple instances, assign unique profiles, directories, and ports and label them clearly.
- Periodically perform a restore test; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Troubleshooting common launcher and server failures
The server starts but players cannot connect
Check that the server process is running, the selected port matches the startup configuration, the host firewall allows it, and the router forwards it to the correct machine. Test from an external network. For a managed host, ask support to confirm the instance’s public endpoint and firewall state.
Players receive a mod mismatch or missing-content error
Compare the server’s enabled list with the client’s list, including dependencies and versions. Remove stale local copies, refresh Workshop downloads, and restart after the update. If the error began immediately after a Workshop change, restore the last known-good mod state and test the new version in staging.
A profile works manually but not after a restart
Compare the saved startup parameters with the manual command. Look for an unquoted path containing spaces, a wrong profile directory, a duplicate port, or a missing mod parameter. Keep the working command in your operations notes rather than relying on a launcher window’s temporary state.
A FASTER2 or repository workflow stops updating
Use the documented SteamCMD procedure as a fallback, confirm Steam authentication, and check whether the tool still supports the current Arma 3 build. Do not delete the only copy of a working profile while troubleshooting.

A practical decision framework
- Need a server in minutes for a few friends? Start with the official Launcher and validate the mission and mods.
- Need an always-on server, Linux, automation, or several instances? Use the standalone server with SteamCMD and document every parameter.
- Use Windows and prefer a GUI for profiles and updates? Evaluate FASTER2, but retain a manual recovery path.
- Already operate a unit repository? Arma3Sync can fit that established workflow after a compatibility check.
- Do not want to manage hardware, patching, or forwarding? Compare managed hosts and verify their current capabilities, location, backups, and terms.
Final recommendation
Use the official launcher to prove that a mod set works, then move a persistent community to a standalone SteamCMD server when you need repeatable starts, updates, backups, and multi-instance control. Choose FASTER2 when a Windows GUI materially reduces your administration burden. Treat Arma3Sync as a compatibility-dependent repository tool, and choose managed hosting only after verifying what the provider actually operates for your edition and mod workload.
