The official Arma 3 dedicated-server specifications are a starting point, not a promise that every mission, player group or mod collection will run well. A reliable setup needs enough CPU simulation capacity, RAM headroom, stable networking and a mission workload that matches the hardware. You can self-host for maximum control or rent managed hosting for simpler operations; in either case, measure the workload instead of sizing from player count alone.
Official Arma 3 server requirements
Bohemia Interactive’s dedicated-server documentation lists the following baseline hardware:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Tier | CPU | Memory | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 2.4 GHz dual-core processor | 2 GB RAM | Entry point for running the server software; not a workload guarantee |
| Recommended | 3.5 GHz quad-core processor | 4 GB RAM | Official general recommendation, still dependent on mission, AI, mods and other services |
These figures describe the server application in broad terms. They do not establish a guaranteed player capacity, a universal mod limit or a modern “best” server build. The documentation does not provide a chart that converts player count, mod count or mission type into a required RAM amount. Treat the numbers as a floor for planning, then validate your actual scenario.
How much RAM does an Arma 3 server need?
Use the official memory figures as your initial allocation, but reserve additional capacity when the machine also runs the operating system, monitoring, voice services, map tools, databases or a headless client. Memory consumption changes with mission scripts, AI entities, streamed assets, modifications and the number of connected users. Two missions with the same player count can have very different footprints.

What RAM is doing
- The operating system and server process need memory before a mission starts.
- Mission scripts, AI state, world data and mod assets add working-set usage while the session runs.
- Other services on a shared machine compete for the same memory and can trigger paging.
- A headless client is a separate process and needs its own operating-system and application headroom.
Paging to disk can turn a memory shortage into stutter even when CPU usage appears moderate. Keep enough free memory for normal peaks rather than sizing to the launch-time reading.
A practical way to size memory
- Begin with the official recommended allocation as the baseline for a dedicated server.
- Install the exact mission and mod set you intend to use, including any server-side utilities.
- Run a representative session with the expected AI activity and connected users, not an empty lobby.
- Record the server process’s peak memory and the host’s total memory pressure throughout the session.
- Add headroom for updates, map changes, scheduled jobs and any additional clients or services you plan to run.
- If memory remains tight, reduce concurrent services or move them to another machine before assuming that adding RAM will solve CPU or network bottlenecks.
This process gives you a workload-based number without pretending that one RAM figure fits every Arma 3 mission.
What CPU do you need for an Arma 3 server?
CPU simulation performance is usually more important than simply counting cores. Bohemia’s configuration guidance describes the server as CPU intensive: when it runs slower, it uses all available CPU processing power to maintain the smoothest possible gameplay. The practical question is therefore whether the processor can keep the mission’s simulation responsive under load.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Why processor choice matters
- AI decision-making, scripts, physics and entity updates create simulation work.
- Mission logic can produce a heavy main-thread workload even when several cores are available.
- Higher clock speed can help, but a quoted GHz number alone cannot predict performance across processor generations.
- Background workloads, power-saving modes and CPU contention on virtual servers can reduce the time available to the game server.
The official minimum and recommended processors should be read as broad classes, not as a guarantee tied to a particular processor model. For a new machine, favor a recent processor with strong per-core performance and predictable sustained clocks, then verify it with your mission. Avoid choosing solely by total core count or advertised burst frequency.

Use server FPS as an operating signal
The Basic Server Config File documentation states that a dedicated server does not run above 50 FPS. It also identifies performance below 20 FPS as a possible sign of an overloaded server, with mission complexity among the potential causes. A low reading can reflect CPU saturation, inefficient scripts, excessive AI or contention from another process, so it is a diagnostic clue rather than a hardware shopping rule.
“When running slower, it always uses all available CPU processing power to maintain the smoothest possible gameplay.”
The default dedicated-server and headless-client FPS limit in the startup-parameter documentation is 50. A higher limit can mean more frequent network messages and more frequent simulation of entities and AI, but the documentation does not promise a noticeable improvement from raising it. Change the cap only after measuring a real bottleneck and testing the mission’s behavior.
Mission and mod load can outweigh the headline hardware
Hardware requirements are inseparable from what the server is asked to simulate. Large AI formations, persistent scripts, dynamic spawning, complex triggers and poorly optimized mods can all reduce server performance. A lightly scripted cooperative mission may run comfortably on hardware that struggles with a heavily scripted persistent scenario.

Variables to evaluate before deployment
- AI population: count active and spawned units, not only human players.
- Script activity: identify loops, frequent polling and scripts that run for every entity.
- Mod behavior: separate client-only cosmetic content from server-side systems that add simulation work.
- Mission transitions: test the busiest phase, such as a large assault or AI respawn wave.
- Shared hosting load: check whether other tenants or processes can consume CPU time or disk I/O.
Test the complete, locked configuration. Removing a mod for a benchmark can produce a result that does not represent the session your players will actually join.
Can a headless client improve server performance?
A headless client can move AI calculations away from the main dedicated-server instance. It is a workload-scaling technique, not a replacement for adequate server hardware and not a hosting-provider category.
Important limitation
The mission must be adapted to extract the appropriate AI work and execute it on the headless client. Starting a headless client without mission changes does not automatically distribute the simulation. Compatibility also depends on how the mission’s scripts assign groups, locality and control.

- You have a mission with substantial AI simulation and a server that is CPU-bound during those phases.
- The mission author or your development team can modify and test locality and AI-handling logic.
- You can provide a separate process or machine with reliable network access to the server.
Bohemia Interactive’s headless-client documentation includes Windows and Linux launch examples. Use those official parameters for your platform, then verify that AI actually moves to the client and that disconnects are handled safely. A headless client adds operational complexity and its own resource requirements, so measure the total system rather than assuming an automatic gain.

Self-hosting versus renting managed Arma 3 hosting
Both approaches can work. The right choice depends on how much control and maintenance you want, where your players are located and whether the provider exposes the settings your mission requires.
| Consideration | Self-hosting | Managed game-server hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Full access to operating system, server files, launch parameters and upgrades | Control varies by panel, plan and provider; some settings may be restricted |
| Hardware | You choose the processor, memory, storage and virtualization environment | You receive an allocated package or resource limit; contention and limits require verification |
| Maintenance | You handle patches, firewall rules, monitoring, backups and recovery | The provider usually handles platform operations, while you still manage missions and mods |
| Mods and missions | Direct file and configuration access, subject to your own administration | Check upload tools, workshop synchronization, custom keys and restart controls before buying |
| Network location | You select the data-center or home connection and must manage routing and exposure | Choose a location close to the player group and confirm latency, bandwidth and DDoS practices |
| Backups | You design and test the backup schedule | Confirm what is backed up, how often, retention and whether restoration costs extra |
| Cost pattern | Up-front hardware or an existing machine plus electricity and administration | Recurring fee for infrastructure and support; resource limits differ by plan |
There is no verified universal “best” provider or current price supported by the available official specifications. Compare the actual plan terms, not just a brand’s advertised slot count.
If you would rather rent than self-host, Godlike.Host’s Arma 3 server hosting uses its own Pterodactyl-based game panel with SFTP/FTP access, a task scheduler and up to three free backups a day with restore. You can also upgrade or downgrade a plan from the panel with prorated billing, which suits the measure-first, resize-later approach above. Check its 10 data-center locations against where your players are, and see the current plans.

How to choose a host or server machine
If you self-host
- Select a recent, stable CPU with strong per-core performance; meet or exceed the official recommended class rather than targeting the minimum for a long-lived community.
- Install enough RAM for the server, operating system and peak mission workload, with room for updates and monitoring.
- Use dependable wired networking and place the machine near the majority of players.
- Separate the game process from unrelated heavy workloads where possible.
- Set up automatic restarts, log collection, firewall rules and tested backups before inviting players.
- Benchmark the busiest mission state and record server FPS, CPU saturation, memory pressure and network behavior.
If you rent
- Ask whether CPU resources are dedicated, shared or subject to throttling.
- Confirm the memory allocation and whether it includes the operating system or only the game container.
- Verify that your required mods, custom missions, startup parameters and headless-client arrangement are supported.
- Check the available geographic regions and test latency from the players’ actual locations.
- Read the backup, restore, file-access, support and cancellation terms.
- Request performance limits in writing when a plan is marketed by slots rather than CPU or RAM.
Troubleshooting common server problems
Server FPS falls during large engagements
Capture logs and observe CPU use while reproducing the event. If one mission phase consistently causes the drop, inspect AI counts, scripts and spawning logic before changing hardware. Test the same phase with optional mods disabled one at a time to identify an expensive component. A headless client may help only after the mission is adapted for it.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Players report rubber-banding or delayed actions
Check server simulation performance and network latency separately. A CPU-bound server can delay updates even on a fast internet connection, while packet loss or a distant region can cause network symptoms without high CPU use. Compare results for players in different locations and review the host’s bandwidth and contention policies.
The process is killed or the machine becomes unresponsive
Check total memory pressure, swap activity and competing services. Large mod sets and mission transitions can create peaks that are invisible in an idle test. Reduce unrelated services, increase available memory or move the server to a machine with more headroom, then retest the same scenario.
Performance changes after moving to a rented plan
Record the old and new CPU model, resource limits, region, virtualization policy and mod synchronization method. A plan with more nominal slots can still perform worse if its CPU is shared or throttled. Ask the provider for the limit and migration options rather than assuming the slot label represents simulation capacity.
Example planning decisions
Small private cooperative group
Start with the official recommended class, keep the machine dedicated to the game where possible and test the group’s actual mission. If the mission is lightly scripted, the baseline may be sufficient; verify memory peaks and server FPS before adding more content.
Large AI-heavy operations
Prioritize strong sustained CPU performance, additional memory headroom and disciplined mission scripting. Plan a realistic load test that includes the largest AI waves. Consider a headless client only if the mission can be modified and maintained for it.
Community server with frequent mod rotations
Budget for operational capacity: storage, backups, update time, configuration access and recovery. A managed host can reduce infrastructure work, but confirm that it supports your synchronization workflow and exposes the launch settings you need.
Bottom line for Arma 3 server requirements
Bohemia Interactive’s 2.4 GHz dual-core/2 GB minimum and 3.5 GHz quad-core/4 GB recommended figures are useful starting points, not universal modern builds. Size CPU for simulation performance, RAM for the complete mission and operating environment, and networking for the players’ locations. Measure the busiest real mission, investigate low server FPS as a workload signal, and choose self-hosting or managed hosting according to the control and maintenance trade-off you can support.
