If Arma Reforger will not start, crashes before the menu, hangs while loading addons, or fails only when joining a server, troubleshoot in this order: update the game, verify the installation on Steam or restart the console, clear or isolate mods, confirm available mod storage, and then test an official or unmodded server. This sequence separates a damaged base installation from an addon, storage, update, or network problem without immediately reinstalling the game.

Identify the failure stage first

Do these checks in order
Bohemia Interactive’s startup-crash guidance recommends updating first, verifying the PC installation, clearing the mod cache, and trying a clean launch. Do not skip directly to repeated server retries: a broken or incomplete addon can make every attempt fail in the same way.
- Install every available game update. On each platform, let the update finish completely before starting the game again. A client and server on different branches or versions may not connect, and a recent patch can temporarily expose addon download problems.
- Verify the Steam installation on PC. In Steam, open your Library, right-click Arma Reforger, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Wait for Steam to complete the check and replace any damaged or missing files.
- Restart before retrying downloads. Fully close the game rather than leaving it suspended. Reopen it and give the mod manager time to resume or retry unfinished downloads.
- Clear the mod cache. Use the game’s mod-management or storage controls to remove cached addon data. This targets corrupted or stale downloaded content without treating the entire base installation as damaged.
- Launch in a clean state. Disable or remove recently added and suspect mods, then start the base game without them. If the clean game reaches the menu, re-enable addons in small groups to identify the conflicting download.
- Test an official or unmodded server. If vanilla play works but a modded server does not, the installation is probably healthy and the remaining investigation should focus on addon requirements, server version, filters, cross-play, or networking.
Fix crashes or a game that never reaches the menu
Use a clean launch to isolate addons
A clean launch is a diagnostic test, not a permanent requirement to play without mods. Disable the addons you installed most recently, especially anything that was downloading or updating when the failure began. Start Arma Reforger and wait for the main menu. If it opens, close the game and restore addons one at a time or in small batches. The first batch that reproduces the crash identifies where to concentrate; remove that addon and download it again only after confirming the base game remains stable.

Separate damaged files from mod data
On Steam, file verification checks the game installation, while clearing the mod cache removes downloaded addon data. They solve different classes of failure, so perform both when a clean launch alone does not help. If verification reports no problems but the game still starts only after mods are disabled, continue with addon isolation instead of repeatedly verifying the same files.
Reduce background load for performance-related startup symptoms
If the game does start but becomes unresponsive or performs poorly, close unnecessary background applications and confirm that the computer meets the published minimum requirements. Lower view distance and shadow settings before changing unrelated options. These steps address an overloaded PC after launch; they do not repair an unfinished addon download or a server connection failure.

Retry incomplete downloads correctly
Official missing-content guidance lists four common causes: a version mismatch, an incomplete download, insufficient storage, or a recent game update. Restart the game, let the mod manager retry, and verify that each required download reaches completion. A server can remain unavailable when even one required addon is only partially installed.

- Remove or disable the addon added immediately before the problem started.
- Do not repeatedly join the same server while the download queue is stalled; return to the menu and allow the manager to finish.
- After a restart, check whether the download resumed or whether it silently failed and needs to be started again.
- When a clean or unmodded server works, treat the failing addon set as the primary suspect.
Check storage before assuming the server is broken
On Xbox, mods use a fixed storage allocation. When that allocation is full, new addons may fail to download or existing ones may not update. Open the console’s Arma Reforger mod-storage controls, remove unused or incomplete content, and then retry the download. Freeing ordinary console storage is not necessarily enough if the separate mod allocation remains full.
Understand the update connection
Patch timing is a useful clue. The June 5, 2025 version 1.4.0.31 notes document fixes for addon downloads getting stuck on an infinite loading screen, unfinished downloads that could not resume after a restart, and resumed downloads that failed without displaying an error. If your symptoms began around that update, install the current build first and retry before making destructive changes.
Platform-specific procedures
PC using Steam
- Confirm Steam has finished downloading the latest Arma Reforger update.
- Run Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Start the game once with recently added or suspect mods disabled.
- Clear cached mod data through the game’s mod manager, then allow required addons to download again.
- If the game works without mods, restore them gradually rather than all at once.
- For poor performance after a successful launch, close background applications and lower view distance and shadows.
If the game crashes before the menu even after verification and a clean launch, record whether the crash occurs before any addon download begins. That distinction is useful when escalating to support because it separates the executable or installation from user-generated content.

Xbox Series X|S
- Restart the console when the game shows memory pressure, unusual performance, or a stalled loading state.
- Check the fixed Arma Reforger mod-storage allocation, not just general free disk space.
- Remove incomplete, unused, or failed addon downloads and retry from a fresh game launch.
- Test an official or unmodded server before attempting a large modded server again.
When a large addon set fails while a vanilla server works, storage capacity or one incompatible addon is more likely than a damaged console installation. If every mode fails, keep the exact failure stage and timing for a support report.
PlayStation 5
- Install the latest game update and restart the console.
- Retry the download after the restart instead of repeatedly selecting the same stalled item during one session.
- Test an official or unmodded server to determine whether the problem is limited to user-generated content.
- If the game reports a storage error or Workshop crash, check for an update-related cause before deleting the installation.
Bohemia Interactive’s May 29, 2025 version 1.4.0.29 notes record fixes for a false PS5 “Not enough storage space” error, PS5 Workshop crashes, console pause/resume corruption, and addon platform-compatibility validation. Those notes do not prove that every current storage message is false, but they make the installed game version an important check.
When loading fails only in multiplayer
Prove whether the base game works
Join an official or unmodded server first. If it loads, the failure is not a general startup problem; focus on the target server’s addon list, branch, filters, and connectivity. If no server loads, continue with platform and network checks rather than downloading the same addon set again.

Check visibility and filters
The multiplayer support guidance identifies filters, platform restrictions, ping limits, region, and cross-play settings as reasons that a server may be invisible or appear unreachable. Clear overly narrow filters, check the selected region and ping limit, and confirm that the server permits your platform. A server can be operating normally while hidden by a local search setting.
Confirm branch, version, and required content
Mismatched game branches and versions prevent connection. Compare your installed branch and version with the server’s requirements, and make sure every required user-generated addon has finished downloading. If the server recently changed its addon set, remove the old incomplete copy and let the manager obtain the current version.
Check cross-play and firewall conditions
Bohemia Interactive confirms cross-play among PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5 when the server enables it. Cross-play therefore depends on the server setting; owning compatible platforms alone does not guarantee that a particular server is visible. On PC, review firewall or other network-security rules that could block the game. Test another official server after allowing the game through the appropriate network prompt. If only one server fails while several others work, report the server-specific evidence rather than reinstalling.

Use update notes to interpret a new problem
A failure that starts immediately after a patch deserves a different approach from a problem that has existed across several versions. First install the newest available build, restart, and retry the affected download. Then check whether the update addressed the exact symptom. Version 1.4.0.31, published June 5, 2025, specifically addressed infinite addon-loading starts, non-resumable unfinished downloads, and resumed downloads that failed without an error. Version 1.4.0.29, published May 29, 2025, included the PS5 storage, Workshop, pause/resume, and addon-compatibility fixes described above.

Always read the current known-issues and troubleshooting information for the installed version before deleting local data or reinstalling.
Escalate with evidence when the standard sequence fails
Escalate after you have completed the clean launch, Steam verification where applicable, mod isolation, storage checks, and multiplayer tests. A useful report lets support reproduce the problem instead of receiving only “it will not load.” Include:
- Platform: Steam PC, Xbox Series X|S, or PlayStation 5.
- Installed game version and branch, plus the date the problem began.
- The exact stage: pre-menu crash, infinite addon loading, failed download, or server-only failure.
- Whether a clean launch and an official or unmodded server work.
- The addon name or server name involved, including whether the download was new, resumed, or updated.
- Steps already taken, such as restarting, verifying files, clearing the cache, freeing mod storage, changing filters, or checking firewall access.
- Logs when the platform makes them available, along with screenshots or a short video showing the error or loading state.
Use Bohemia Interactive’s current known-issues and troubleshooting resources when submitting the report, because live-service behavior can change with later updates. Do not remove logs or reinstall before recording the version and reproduction steps; those details are often more useful than a fresh installation with no evidence.
A practical decision path
Use the result of each test to choose the next action:
- Nothing opens: update, verify the PC installation or restart the console, clear mod data, and repeat the clean launch.
- The menu opens without mods: restore addons gradually and remove the one that reproduces the failure.
- Addon downloads stall: restart, check completion status and platform storage, then retry the affected addon.
- Official servers work but one modded server fails: compare versions, branches, required addons, filters, cross-play, and firewall conditions.
- No servers work after local checks: capture logs and connection details and consult current support guidance.
This approach avoids treating every loading screen as a corrupted installation. It also preserves a clear record of what changed the result, which is the fastest way to distinguish a local file, addon, storage, update, or multiplayer problem.
