Arma Reforger Server Tick Rate: FPS Caps and Performance Tuning

Arma Reforger documents server FPS caps and per-tick streaming controls, not a separate simulation tick-rate setting. This guide explains how to measure, tune and troubleshoot dedicated-server performance without sacrificing entity streaming or gameplay.

Arma Reforger does not document a separate, configurable simulation tick-rate setting for dedicated servers. Its official server guidance instead exposes a maximum server-FPS cap and controls for how much streaming work is processed in each tick. Treat those as different concepts: -maxFPS limits the server’s frame rate, while -streamingBudget and -staggeringBudget shape the amount of entity and map-cell work handled per tick.

For a stable server, measure the real workload first, set a deliberate FPS ceiling, then adjust streaming budgets only when frame-time spikes, slow entity delivery, or pop-in point to a streaming bottleneck. The right value depends on the scenario, terrain, mods, AI population and player load; the documentation provides ranges and trade-offs, not a universal performance preset.

Does Arma Reforger have a configurable server tick rate?

Not as a distinct setting documented by Bohemia Interactive. The dedicated-server documentation discusses server FPS and per-tick processing controls, but it does not establish a separate number such as a 30 Hz or 60 Hz simulation-rate switch. A server-FPS cap and a simulation tick rate should therefore not be used interchangeably.

-maxFPS places a ceiling on how quickly the server can run its frame loop. It does not guarantee that the server will reach that ceiling, and raising it does not automatically improve performance. CPU load, script activity, AI, physics, replication and streaming can all keep actual FPS below the cap. The cap is a resource-management decision, not a promise of a particular simulation frequency.

Streaming controls affect the work attempted inside those frames. They can reduce a frame-time spike when players spawn or teleport, but the same reduction can make entities take longer to arrive at clients. That trade-off is why tuning should be based on measurements from the scenario your community actually plays.

Measure the server before changing settings

Start with the official Startup Parameters documentation. Its -logStats parameter records server-performance information at a chosen interval; the documented example is -logStats 10000, which reports every 10,000 milliseconds (10 seconds).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The log can include:

  • Current server FPS.
  • Average, minimum and maximum frame time.
  • An internal approximate memory figure.
  • Player and AI counts.
  • Vehicle and projectile counts.
  • Replication-stream counts.

The memory value is an approximation internal to the server. It can differ from what your operating system, container runtime or hosting panel reports, so use OS-level monitoring as a second measurement rather than treating the log value as a complete RAM reading.

Build a useful baseline

  1. Use the same terrain, scenario, mod list and mission configuration that you intend to operate in production.
  2. Record several minutes of ordinary play, then include the event that normally causes trouble: a mass spawn, a teleport, a base assault or another high-entity transition.
  3. Save the FPS, frame-time average and frame-time spikes together with player, AI, vehicle, projectile and replication counts from the same interval.
  4. Note client observations such as delayed entity arrival, visible pop-in or long pauses after teleporting.

The documentation describes the fields that -logStats can expose, but it does not prescribe a benchmark scenario or claim a particular player capacity. Your baseline must represent your own workload.

Choose a deliberate -maxFPS cap

Bohemia Interactive Community’s Server Hosting guidance recommends a -maxFPS value in the 60–120 range and warns that an uncapped server may attempt to use all available resources. The same guidance should be read as a documented operating range, not as a guarantee that every machine or mission can sustain any value within it.

Cap choice What it means How to evaluate it
60 FPS A conservative ceiling at the bottom of the documented range. Check whether frame-time spikes fall and whether ordinary play remains responsive.
Between 60 and 120 FPS A value inside the documented recommendation that matches your resource budget and workload. Compare sustained FPS with the cap and inspect average and worst frame times.
120 FPS The top of the documented recommendation. Use only if the server consistently has headroom under the real scenario; a higher ceiling is not itself an optimization.

If the server rarely reaches the chosen cap, increasing it will not create missing performance. If it reaches the cap while using resources that you need for other services, lowering the ceiling can make resource use more predictable. Change the cap on its own, repeat the same workload, and compare the logs rather than judging by the configured number.

Tune streaming when spawns or teleports cause stalls

Two startup parameters are relevant when the server slows as players and entities enter a new area. Their values govern different kinds of work, and both involve a speed-versus-smoothness trade-off.

-streamingBudget: shared entity-streaming work

The documented -streamingBudget is a global entity-streaming budget shared across connections. The startup-parameter documentation states that it cannot be set below 100. A lower budget limits the amount of streaming work attempted during a tick, which can help contain a frame-time spike. The cost is slower delivery of entities to clients; if the value is too low, players may see objects appear late or pop into view.

Because the budget is shared, adding more players changes the pressure on the same pool. Evaluate it with the expected player count rather than with an empty server. Watch both server frame time and the time clients need to receive nearby vehicles, structures, AI and other replicated entities.

-staggeringBudget: stationary map cells per tick

-staggeringBudget limits how many stationary spatial map cells are processed in one tick. The documented range is 1–10,201. Lowering it can spread work across more ticks and reduce a sharp CPU event when a group spawns or teleports, but it also extends the period during which the destination area is being streamed. There is no official universal best value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this control when your logs show a repeatable frame-time jump at spatial transitions. A reduction is working only if the spike becomes less disruptive without producing unacceptable entity delay. If players report that the world fills in gradually or that important objects are missing for too long, the setting is probably too restrictive for that workload.

Setting Documented behavior Trade-off to monitor
-streamingBudget Global entity-streaming budget shared by connections; minimum documented value is 100. Lower values reduce work per tick but delay entity delivery and can cause pop-in.
-staggeringBudget Limits stationary spatial map cells processed per tick; documented range is 1–10,201. Lower values can soften spawn or teleport spikes but lengthen streaming time.

A safe adjustment sequence

  1. Keep the FPS cap and all other settings unchanged.
  2. Change one streaming parameter by a modest amount within its documented range.
  3. Repeat the same spawn or teleport workload with comparable player and AI counts.
  4. Compare minimum FPS, maximum and average frame time, replication behavior and client-visible pop-in.
  5. Keep the change only if it improves the server symptom without making entity arrival materially worse; otherwise restore the previous value and test the other parameter.

Navmesh streaming: memory versus AI responsiveness

The Server Config documentation describes disableNavmeshStreaming. When navmesh streaming is disabled, the full navmesh is loaded into memory. That can improve server performance and AI reaction times, but the additional memory depends on the terrain and can reach hundreds of megabytes. The documentation does not provide a single benchmark number that applies to every map.

This option is therefore a capacity decision as much as a speed decision. Compare frame-time behavior and AI responsiveness against the memory headroom visible in both server logs and operating-system monitoring. Also check the syntax for the release you actually run: the configuration format changed in version 1.2.0, so an example written for an older release may not be valid for a current installation.

Do not use gameplay switches as generic optimizations

disableAI changes the scenario

disableAI prevents AIWorld and its components from initializing and ticking. That disables server AI functionality; it is not a neutral performance tweak. Use it only when the chosen scenario intentionally does not require server AI. If human players are meant to fight or interact with AI, removing AI to raise FPS changes the game being hosted.

Keep fastValidation: true for public hosting

The server-configuration guidance recommends keeping fastValidation: true on a public server. Do not present disabling validation as a routine way to gain performance. A public instance should follow the documented validation recommendation unless you have a specific, understood reason to operate differently.

Diagnose common performance symptoms

FPS is low all the time

  • Confirm the workload with -logStats 10000 instead of assuming the cap is the cause.
  • Check whether AI, vehicles, projectiles or replication counts are high during the entire interval.
  • Verify that the server is not simply failing to reach its chosen -maxFPS; raising the ceiling cannot fix a workload that already saturates the machine.
  • Test the same scenario with one change at a time so that a cap adjustment is not confused with a streaming adjustment.

FPS drops when players spawn or teleport

  • Compare frame-time spikes with the replication and entity activity recorded at the transition.
  • Test a lower -streamingBudget or -staggeringBudget within its documented limits.
  • Have players report whether the destination takes longer to populate. A smaller spike accompanied by severe pop-in is a trade-off, not a complete fix.

Entities pop in after a budget change

Pop-in is the expected failure mode of an overly restrictive streaming budget: less work is completed in each tick, so delivery takes longer. Raise the relevant budget gradually and repeat the same transition until client arrival is acceptable without restoring the original frame-time problem. There is no documented universal threshold because terrain and scenario complexity differ.

AI reacts slowly or the server uses too much memory

If navmesh streaming is disabled, check whether the memory increase is acceptable for the terrain. Re-enable streaming if the additional memory leaves insufficient headroom; keep disableAI out of the test unless removing AI is an intentional gameplay choice.

A repeatable tuning checklist

  1. Document the installed Reforger version, scenario, terrain, mods and expected player count.
  2. Start logging with -logStats 10000 and capture normal play plus the known problem event.
  3. Choose an initial -maxFPS cap inside the documented 60–120 range.
  4. Confirm whether actual FPS reaches that cap or remains below it under load.
  5. For spawn and teleport spikes, test -streamingBudget and -staggeringBudget separately.
  6. Record both server-side frame-time changes and client-side entity-delivery quality.
  7. Evaluate disableNavmeshStreaming only as a memory/performance trade-off, using syntax valid for the installed release.
  8. Do not disable AI or validation merely to make a performance graph look better.
  9. Retest after changing the mod set, mission, terrain or expected population; old measurements no longer describe the new workload.

What the official guidance does not establish

The cited documentation provides parameter behavior, ranges and diagnostic fields, not controlled server-capacity statistics, a guaranteed player count, or workload-specific CPU, RAM and network requirements. Do not turn the 60–120 FPS cap range, the 100 streaming-budget minimum or the 1–10,201 staggering range into a hardware-sizing promise.

If you self-host, size and monitor the machine against your measured scenario. If you use a dedicated game-server provider, verify current Arma Reforger support, configuration access, service terms and pricing directly before committing; provider capacity is not established by the official parameter pages.
