Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before downloading anything, record:
- Which program or game fails: note the executable name and its installation folder.
- When the error appears: during launch, after an update, after antivirus cleanup, or after restoring an old backup.
- The exact message: “asan_rtl.dll was not found,” “The specified module could not be found,” or “not designed to run on Windows.”
- The application architecture: determine whether the failing program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Recent changes: check whether the program was reinstalled, moved, updated, repaired, or quarantined by security software.
asan_rtl.dll is a historical AddressSanitizer runtime used by Google’s Syzygy Transformation Toolchain. If Windows reports that it is missing, the safest assumption is that an older instrumented application has lost one of its own files, not that Windows itself needs a replacement DLL.
What asan_rtl.dll belongs to
Syzygy was a Windows binary-instrumentation project. Its AddressSanitizer runtime helped instrumented programs detect memory errors, including use-after-free and double-free conditions. Older Syzygy-instrumented executables imported the runtime as asan_rtl.dll.
Later Syzygy releases renamed the runtime to SyzyASan_rtl.dll. That means an application requesting the old filename is probably an old testing build, developer tool, instrumented executable, or software package that bundled an earlier Syzygy component.
This is not normally:
- A Windows system component
- A Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A DLL that should be copied into
C:WindowsSystem32 - A COM component that should be registered with
regsvr32
Syzygy was archived by Google, and there is no current Microsoft or Google end-user redistributable specifically for the old asan_rtl.dll filename. The correct repair is therefore tied to the application that installed or shipped it.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program that reports the error
This is the most likely solution. It restores the matching runtime, related dependencies, and expected folder layout together.
Identify the parent application
- Read the error dialog and note the executable name if it is shown.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- Open the folder shown in the target path.
- Confirm that the program’s executable and related files are in that folder.
- If the error appears from a launcher, use the launcher’s settings to identify the installed product.
If you cannot identify the application, open Task Manager, start the program, and watch the Processes or Details tab for the executable that appears briefly before the error. Search the Start menu for the same program name and check its shortcut properties.
Repair a Windows-listed application
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings. For classic desktop software:
- Press
Win + R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Choose the repair option and complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If repair fails, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original vendor installer, launcher, or installation media. Do not use a standalone copy of asan_rtl.dll from a DLL download site.
A successful repair normally lets the same executable start without the loader message. If the program still requests the file, the installer may not contain the old runtime, the wrong build may be installed, or the application may have been separated from its original instrumented package. Contact the application developer in that case.
Fix 2: Verify the files through the application launcher
Games and managed software often have a repair process that is more reliable than copying files manually.
Look in the launcher for menus named Verify, Verify integrity, Scan and repair, Repair, or Validate files. In Steam:

- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Launch the game again.
Other launchers use similar wording. If verification reports damaged or missing files, allow it to replace them. If it reports that all files are valid but the error remains, check whether the failing executable is an old testing build or a separate tool installed outside the launcher.

Antivirus software may remove a runtime from an otherwise legitimate application. Do not restore it automatically. First confirm that the file belonged to the installed program and was not located in a temporary folder, download cache, or untrusted archive.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Filter or inspect recent detections.
- Open the detection associated with the affected program.
- Check the original file path and detection details.
- Scan the application installer and its installation folder.
- Restore or allow the file only when you have verified that it came from the legitimate application and the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft’s instructions for this screen are available in Protection history in the Windows Security app.
If the file came from an unknown archive or a temporary directory, do not restore it. Remove the application and reinstall it from the original developer instead. If Defender removes the file again after a clean reinstall, stop attempting to bypass the detection and contact the software vendor.
Fix 4: Check architecture and Syzygy build compatibility
A missing-file message can hide an architecture problem. A 32-bit executable needs a compatible 32-bit runtime. A different build may exist under the same filename but export different functions or depend on different supporting files.

That does not prove that every copy of the filename was 32-bit, so use the parent executable as the authority.
Check the application architecture by:
- Looking for separate
x86,x64, orARM64folders in the official package - Checking the vendor’s documentation
- Asking the vendor which build was shipped
- Inspecting the executable with a trusted internal diagnostic tool
Do not place a 32-bit DLL beside a 64-bit executable, or the reverse. Do not replace the old filename with the later SyzyASan_rtl.dll name unless the application developer provides a compatible rebuild and instructions.

Messages containing “not designed to run on Windows,” “Bad Image,” or error 0xC000007B can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an invalid dependency. They are not proof that the file is simply absent.
If reinstalling the parent program does not resolve this, provide the vendor with the full executable path, application version, Windows architecture, exact error text, and any status code.

Fix 5: Install Visual C++ only for a separate MSVC dependency
Installing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages does not install Syzygy’s asan_rtl.dll. It may help only when the application separately reports a missing Microsoft runtime such as an MSVC DLL.
If the application vendor specifically requires Visual C++ Redistributable:
- Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Choose the package architecture required by the application.
- Run the installer.
- Select Repair if an existing installation is detected.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
Microsoft provides separate x86, x64, and ARM64 packages. The package architecture must match the application. Installing Visual C++ is not a substitute for obtaining the matching Syzygy runtime from the application developer.
Fix 6: Check Windows Features and drivers only when the symptoms are broader
asan_rtl.dll is not a Windows optional feature, and enabling a random feature will not recreate it. You can still check Windows Features when the failing program depends on an older framework or component documented by its vendor.
- Press
Win + R. - Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review enabled features such as legacy framework components.
- Enable a feature only when the application documentation specifically requires it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable legacy components merely because the filename is missing.

Device drivers are also not a normal source of asan_rtl.dll. Check them when the application began failing after a graphics, storage, chipset, or peripheral change:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver only with a driver supplied by the device manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows and test the application.

For a program-specific asan_rtl.dll failure, reinstalling that program remains the definitive repair.
Fix 7: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when several unrelated programs fail, Windows components are damaged, or the problem began after a system failure. They normally repair protected Windows components, not a third-party Syzygy DLL.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Microsoft documents this order in Using System File Checker in Windows.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, retest the application. If both commands complete successfully but asan_rtl.dll is still missing, return to the parent application repair. SFC is not expected to recreate a Syzygy runtime.

Do not copy asan_rtl.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. That can create version conflicts, interfere with another application, and increase DLL hijacking risk. A runtime should normally sit beside the executable or in the application’s own supported directory.

Manual copying is appropriate only when the application developer supplies the exact file for the exact build and gives placement instructions.
regsvr32 is also generally irrelevant. It is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An AddressSanitizer runtime is a program dependency, not ordinarily a self-registering COM server. Running regsvr32 asan_rtl.dll will not repair a missing runtime and can produce another error.

When to contact the software vendor
Contact the vendor when:
- Repair, verification, and a clean reinstall do not restore the file
- The vendor’s installer does not include the runtime
- The application is an old developer or testing build
- The error names a dependency of
asan_rtl.dll - You see
0xC000007B, “Bad Image,” or “procedure not found” - The vendor supplied a custom instrumented executable
- Antivirus repeatedly quarantines the file
- You cannot determine whether the executable is 32-bit or 64-bit
Send the vendor the executable path, exact error message, application build, Windows version and architecture, whether antivirus quarantined anything, and the results of repair or verification. Ask for the matching Syzygy package or a rebuilt application rather than a generic DLL.

Is asan_rtl.dll part of Windows?
No evidence indicates that it is a Windows system component. It belongs to software using the Syzygy AddressSanitizer runtime.

No. Visual C++ Redistributable installs Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries. It does not install Syzygy’s asan_rtl.dll.
Can I download the DLL separately?
Avoid random DLL download sites. A downloaded file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, export incompatible functions, or hide the real application damage. Obtain the complete matching package from the original software developer.
Why does the error say the specified module is missing when the DLL is present?
The named DLL may have a missing dependency, be corrupt, or be incompatible with the executable. Reinstall the parent application and check the full error details rather than copying another DLL.
Should I use System Restore?
System Restore may roll back system files and settings, but it is not guaranteed to recover a third-party runtime. Use it only when the problem began after a broader system change and application repair has not worked. Microsoft lists recovery choices in Recovery options in Windows.
