gsdx32-sse2-r5875.dll is an old 32-bit GSdx graphics plugin used by PCSX2, the PlayStation 2 emulator. If Windows says gsdx32-sse2-r5875.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the matching PCSX2 installation rather than copying a random DLL into Windows.
The file is not a Windows component. It normally belongs in the Plugins folder of the older PCSX2 installation that supplied it. The safest fix is to reinstall or restore the complete matching PCSX2 package, historically associated with PCSX2 1.2.1 revision 5875.
What the filename means
The name contains useful compatibility information:
gsdxidentifies PCSX2’s GSdx graphics plugin.32means it is a 32-bit plugin.sse2identifies the CPU instruction-set variant.r5875identifies the historical PCSX2 development revision.
It is not meant to be registered with Windows, and it should not normally be placed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Historical records also associate this plugin with an old PCSX2 build, but current PCSX2 releases use a different architecture and plugin system. Do not assume that a current emulator can use this exact file.
Fix 1: Restore the complete PCSX2 installation
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely solution when PCSX2 stopped starting after a failed update, antivirus action, disk cleanup, or incomplete extraction.
Back up your PCSX2 data
Before reinstalling:
- Close PCSX2.
- Open the folder where PCSX2 is installed.
- Back up folders containing memory cards, save states and configuration files.
- If you are unsure where your saves are stored, search File Explorer for files with PCSX2-related names and copy them to another folder.
Do not delete the old installation until your saves are safe.
Install a matching package
For an old installation that specifically expects gsdx32-sse2-r5875.dll:
- Obtain the complete matching PCSX2 package from the PCSX2 project’s official archive or official download location.
- Do not download the DLL by itself.
- Extract or install PCSX2 into its own folder, such as
C:GamesPCSX2. - Avoid extracting individual files into
System32,SysWOW64or another application’s folder. - Start PCSX2 from the new installation.
- Open the graphics or GS plugin settings.
- Select the bundled SSE2 GSdx plugin only if the processor supports SSE2.
- Save the configuration and start the emulator.
A portable installation is useful because it separates a clean program folder from damaged settings in the old installation. Current PCSX2 documentation also recommends keeping portable builds in their own folder instead of scattering files across Windows.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair worked if PCSX2 opens without the missing-DLL message and its graphics settings can load the GS plugin.
If the same error remains, check whether the newly installed folder actually contains the plugin and whether PCSX2 is launching from the new folder. A desktop shortcut may still point to the damaged installation.
Right-click the PCSX2 shortcut, select Properties, and inspect Target. If it points to the old folder, create a new shortcut from the repaired installation.

If your error names d3dx9_43.dll or another legacy DirectX file, install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from the Microsoft Download Center.
Follow these steps:
- Download
dxwebsetup.exefrom Microsoft. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- Allow the installer to add the legacy side-by-side DirectX libraries.
- Restart Windows.
- Start PCSX2 again.
This package supplies optional legacy components such as D3DX9 libraries. Having DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 installed does not guarantee that these older files are present. Installing the runtime is not a universal fix for a missing GSdx plugin, so use it when the error identifies a legacy DirectX dependency.
Check for a Visual C++ dependency
If the message names a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, install the x86 redistributable because this is a 32-bit application component.
The historical compiler label associated with this build points to the Visual Studio 2013 generation, but the exact dependency manifest for the original binary is not available from an official maintained catalog.
- Open Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ downloads.
- Locate the Visual C++ 2013 section.
- Download
vcredist_x86.exe. - Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if the runtime is already installed.
- Restart Windows and test PCSX2.
Do not install only the x64 package for a 32-bit PCSX2 installation. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit programs, but the application’s architecture determines which runtime it needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have removed the plugin. Do not immediately create an exclusion or restore the file.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving PCSX2 or
gsdx32-sse2-r5875.dll. - Open the detection details.
- Confirm that the file came from a complete PCSX2 package obtained from the project’s official archive.
- Restore it only if the source and detection details are trustworthy.
- Reinstall the complete PCSX2 package instead if the file came from an unknown download.
Microsoft explains the risks of restoring detected files in its guidance for Protection History. If antivirus repeatedly flags the file, leave it quarantined until the package provenance and detection have been checked.
The safer recovery is usually to remove the damaged copy and install PCSX2 again from its official source. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection just to make an old plugin load.
Fix 4: Select the correct GSdx build
Time needed: 5 minutes
Older PCSX2 packages included separate GSdx builds for different processor instruction sets, including SSE2, SSSE3 and SSE4.1.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf the CPU does not support the selected instruction set, the plugin may fail to load or the emulator may crash.
- Open the PCSX2 installation folder.
- Look for the bundled GSdx variants.
- Open PCSX2’s graphics plugin configuration.
- Select the highest instruction-set variant supported by the processor.
- If the machine only supports SSE2, select the SSE2 build.
- Save the setting and restart PCSX2.
Do not replace an SSE2 plugin with an SSE4.1 or AVX build unless the processor supports it. If the old computer cannot run the required plugin, a newer PCSX2 version compatible with that hardware may be a better long-term solution.

Current PCSX2 documentation states that 32-bit support was dropped after version 1.6.0 and that Direct3D 9 support was removed after version 1.4.0. Therefore, a current release should not be expected to use this exact historical filename.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall the graphics driver
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
If GSdx loads but PCSX2 reports unsupported hardware, crashes, or fails when you select a Direct3D renderer, the problem may be the graphics driver rather than the DLL.
Check the installed adapter
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Note whether the adapter is Intel, AMD or NVIDIA.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and review the provider and date.
- Download the current driver from the adapter manufacturer.
- Install it and restart Windows.
You can also right-click the adapter and choose Update driver, then select Search automatically for drivers. Manufacturer packages are generally preferable for older graphics hardware.
If the driver installation is damaged:
- In Device Manager, right-click the display adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct driver from Intel, AMD or NVIDIA.
- Test PCSX2 with another available renderer.
PCSX2’s current system requirements recommend keeping graphics drivers current.
When identifying an outdated driver manually means hunting through multiple hardware pages and guessing which packages apply, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and show what needs attention; driver installation through the full version is optional, and reinstalling PCSX2 remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 6: Repair Windows system components
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use Windows repair commands only after restoring PCSX2 and checking its dependencies. These commands repair protected Windows components; they do not recreate a missing PCSX2 plugin.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test PCSX2 again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its system file repair guidance.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that repair completed, and Windows no longer has damaged protected components. If the PCSX2 error remains unchanged, return to the emulator installation and dependency checks rather than repeatedly running SFC.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows issues and identify repair targets; its full version performs repairs, but it is not required, and reinstalling the PCSX2 package remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 7: Reset PCSX2 configuration with a clean test
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A damaged configuration can make a valid plugin appear unusable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Close PCSX2.
- Confirm that your memory cards and save states are backed up.
- Install or extract a clean PCSX2 copy into a new folder.
- Do not copy the old configuration files into it yet.
- Start the clean installation.
- Select the bundled GSdx plugin.
- Test the emulator with a basic configuration.
- If it works, copy back only your save data and memory cards.
- Recreate graphics settings manually.
If the clean copy works, the original installation or configuration was damaged. If it fails with a named dependency, follow the dependency-specific fix above.

The common causes are:
| Cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete PCSX2 installation | Restore or reinstall the complete matching package |
| Plugin deleted or quarantined | Check Protection History and verify the package source |
Missing d3dx9_43.dll |
Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX End-User Runtime |
| Missing Visual C++ runtime | Install the required x86 redistributable |
| CPU does not support the selected build | Choose a compatible SSE2 variant or newer emulator |
| Graphics driver or hardware problem | Update the manufacturer driver and test another renderer |
| Corrupt Windows components | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Mixed old and new PCSX2 files | Use one complete, matching installation |
Do not use regsvr32 for this plugin
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a self-registration mechanism, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A GSdx plugin is loaded through PCSX2’s plugin interface, not registered globally.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download gsdx32-sse2-r5875.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into a system folder. That approach can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong PCSX2 revision
- The wrong 32-bit or instruction-set build
- A file with missing dependencies
- A plugin that does not match the emulator executable
The safe source is the complete PCSX2 package from the PCSX2 project’s official download or archive pages. Reinstall the program that owns the file instead of treating the DLL as an independent Windows component.
Frequently asked questions
Is gsdx32-sse2-r5875.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a historical PCSX2 GSdx graphics plugin and should not be installed into System32 or SysWOW64.
Can 64-bit Windows use this file?
Yes. A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit PCSX2 installation. The application and plugin must still match each other, and the required Visual C++ runtime is typically the x86 version.
Does SSE2 refer to Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. SSE2 identifies a processor instruction-set variant. It is unrelated to the Windows edition.
Why does PCSX2 say the plugin failed when the DLL exists?
A dependency such as d3dx9_43.dll may be missing. An incompatible CPU, graphics driver, renderer or mismatched application architecture can also prevent the plugin from loading.
Should I install DirectX 9?
Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX End-User Runtime only when the error identifies an older DirectX component or the old PCSX2 build needs those libraries. It is not a universal replacement for the missing GSdx plugin.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. Keep it with the matching PCSX2 installation, normally in its plugin directory.
What if the error started after updating PCSX2?
Do not mix the old GSdx plugin with a newer executable. Restore a complete matching build or move to a current PCSX2 release supported by the computer.
When should I use System Restore?
Only when the problem clearly began after a Windows change and a suitable restore point exists. Microsoft explains the tradeoffs in its System Restore guidance. It is not the first-line fix for an isolated PCSX2 plugin error.
What is the final escalation step?
Back up saves and memory cards, remove the damaged PCSX2 installation, create a clean portable installation from the official PCSX2 source, and test it without importing the old configuration. This separates a missing plugin, dependency issue, hardware limitation and corrupted settings from one another.
