Campaign: the narrative option
The campaign is the story-focused mode. The Steam description places you in command of the United Earth Forces in a near-future conflict. It is separate from repeatable skirmishes and competitive multiplayer, so it is the appropriate choice if you want structured missions and narrative context rather than a configurable match.

Stardock says the campaign will support full offline play. That means the single-player story is not dependent on an active multiplayer connection according to the published FAQ. The available material does not specify campaign length, mission count, difficulty settings, or whether campaign progress synchronizes online, so those details should not be assumed.
Multiplayer: PvP, co-op, and mixed teams
Online co-op against AI
The clearest answer to the co-op question is yes: Stardock’s FAQ says players can team up with friends online and fight AI opponents. This is cooperative play rather than a competitive mode, because the human players share the objective of defeating computer-controlled forces.
The announcement does not establish a separate co-op campaign, a fixed mission roster, or a special co-op progression system. Co-op is described as part of multiplayer and skirmish-style play. Stardock has said it was considering additional co-op-focused modes, but no such mode has been formally announced for launch.

Players will be able to create or join games containing only human participants. These matches can be competitive free-for-alls or team battles, depending on the selected setup. The release announcement groups this under multiplayer and competitive play, while the Steam listing labels online PvP as a supported feature.

Mixed human-and-AI games
Stardock’s FAQ also confirms online games that combine people and bots. AI players can therefore supplement a lobby when a full human roster is not available, or they can be included deliberately as part of the match design. The exact lobby controls, replacement rules, and difficulty options have not been published, so the announcement should not be read as a promise that every map or ruleset will support every mixture.
Can Ashes of the Singularity II be played offline?
Yes. Stardock states that Ashes II will support full offline play in both the campaign and skirmish against AI bots. This is more extensive than simply offering an offline tutorial: the FAQ specifically describes complete matches against computer opponents without an online connection.
Offline team games
Offline skirmish can include teaming up with AI in team-versus-team games. You can therefore practice a coordinated army composition with computer allies or set up a battle in which both sides contain AI-controlled forces.

The same FAQ says offline play can include free-for-alls against numerous AI opponents. That gives solo players a way to create multi-sided battles rather than being limited to a one-on-one duel. “Numerous” is Stardock’s wording; it does not establish a final bot count or a universal map-size limit.

What offline play does not mean
Offline support applies to the campaign and AI skirmish formats. It does not turn human multiplayer into a local or disconnected mode. Playing with friends online, whether cooperatively or competitively, still requires the game’s online multiplayer service and whatever connection requirements are specified at launch.
How many players will Ashes II support?
A Stardock report on the Steam Next Fest demo recorded matches with up to eight players. That demonstration included full PvP, co-op against AI, and solo skirmish. It is useful evidence that the engine and multiplayer design have been tested at that scale, but it is not a guaranteed launch cap.
Until Stardock publishes a final specification, treat eight as a documented demo or playtest configuration rather than the confirmed maximum for the retail game. The final number could depend on map, mode, performance target, or later balancing decisions. No larger or smaller universal cap is established by the cited announcements.

Those factions can be used in several structures:
- Solo AI skirmish: one human player against computer-controlled opponents.
- Cooperative teams: multiple human players on one side against AI.
- Competitive teams: human players divided into opposing alliances.
- Free-for-all: several independent sides, including offline games against bots.
- Mixed rosters: online teams or lobbies containing both human and AI participants.
The announcements establish these broad formats, but not every combination of faction, map, team size, or victory condition. Those details may be exposed through the final match setup, yet they should not be treated as confirmed until Stardock documents them.

Instant Action is the quick-start, repeatable battle option described on the Steam page. You choose a battlefield and fight computer-controlled opponents designed by the developers. It is the natural home for solo practice, experimentation with factions, and offline matches that do not require the campaign’s narrative structure.

Which mode should you choose?
If you want a story
Choose Campaign. It is the only announced mode built around a narrative and the United Earth Forces, and it is planned to work offline.
If you want to play with friends against bots
Choose online co-op or a multiplayer skirmish configured cooperatively. This is the confirmed way to form a human team and fight AI opponents together.
If you want a no-internet match
Use Campaign or offline skirmish against AI. Offline team games can include AI allies, and offline free-for-alls can place you against multiple computer opponents.
If you want a fair competitive match
Use online PvP with a human-only roster. Competitive team battles and solo battles are both part of the announced multiplayer scope.
If your group is short a player
Use a mixed human-and-AI online game. Stardock says bots can share a match with human participants, although the final rules for assigning or replacing AI players have not been published.
Release timing and remaining unknowns
Stardock’s latest cited release announcement gives November 10, 2026 as the planned launch date. The Steam product page still uses the label Coming soon, so the date should be read as a plan rather than a guarantee. Steam is the listed storefront and wishlist destination.
Several practical details remain open:
- The final maximum number of players at launch.
- Whether the eight-player demo configuration will be retained for every mode.
- The exact maps, rules, and bot settings available in co-op.
- Any additional co-op-focused modes beyond standard battles against AI.
- Local-network or split-screen support, which has not been announced.
- Cross-play, matchmaking, server, and progression details, which are not specified in the cited material.
For now, the reliable picture is straightforward: Ashes of the Singularity II is being built as both a single-player and multiplayer RTS. You can expect an offline campaign, offline AI skirmishes, online co-op against bots, human-only PvP, and online matches that mix people with AI. The player-count ceiling and any expanded co-op formats should be treated as provisional until Stardock publishes final launch specifications.
