asmga80a.dll is an Autodesk ShapeManager component, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Autodesk application that needs it. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy it into System32; restore the matching Autodesk installation instead.
What this file actually does
asmga80a.dll is described as ASM Generalized Attributes. It is associated with Autodesk ShapeManager, Autodesk’s geometry technology used by products including AutoCAD-based applications, Inventor, and 3ds Max.
It is not a Windows system DLL and is not a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file. The filename alone cannot identify which Autodesk product installed it, because several Autodesk products can share components.
Public file catalogs list these builds:
| Build | Architecture | Reported size |
|---|---|---|
| 8.0.4.7009 | 32-bit | Approximately 0.16 MB |
| 8.0.2.7023 | 32-bit | Approximately 0.16 MB |
Those version and size records are third-party catalog information, not an Autodesk download recommendation. A listed version is not automatically correct for every Autodesk product.

The file may normally be stored beside the Autodesk executable or within an Autodesk shared-components directory. There is no single universal path that is correct for every Autodesk installation. Its presence in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 would not prove that it belongs there.

Fix 1: Identify the program calling asmga80a.dll
Before repairing anything, identify the application that fails. Repairing the wrong Autodesk product can leave the original problem unchanged.
Check these locations:
- Read the complete error dialog. It may show the application name or executable path.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties. Check the Target field.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details and look for the executable when starting the affected program.
- Check Event Viewer:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Find an error at the time the program failed.
- Read the Faulting application name and Faulting module name fields.
If the calling program is AutoCAD, Inventor, 3ds Max, or another Autodesk application, use that exact product in the repair steps below. If the failing program is not Autodesk, use its own Repair, Verify files, or reinstall function before changing shared Autodesk files.
Fix 2: Update Autodesk through Autodesk Access
A failed update or incomplete installer is one of the most likely causes of a missing ShapeManager file. Autodesk Access can restore shared components when an update is available.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Start menu.
- Select Autodesk.
- Open Autodesk Access.
- Sign in if prompted.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Look for an available update.
- Select Update.
- Restart Windows after the update finishes.
- Launch the affected program again.
If the update fails, restart Windows and repeat the process once. Close Autodesk applications before trying again. Also make sure the account running Autodesk Access has administrator rights.
If Autodesk Access does not list the product, sign in to your Autodesk Account and check the product’s update or download area. Autodesk Shared Components can also be installed or updated through Autodesk’s official Shared Components installer. Use only the installer supplied through Autodesk channels.
A successful repair normally allows the affected application to start without the asmga80a.dll message. If a different DLL error appears, that usually means the first missing component was restored and another dependency now needs attention.
Fix 3: Repair the Autodesk product from Control Panel
Older Autodesk installations may provide a repair option through Windows Programs and Features.

If Repair is not offered, use the product’s official reinstall process instead. Some newer Autodesk products expose only Uninstall, so reinstalling the exact product is the normal recovery path rather than forcing an older repair workflow.
Fix 4: Reinstall the exact Autodesk product
Use this step when repair is unavailable, the repair completes without changing the error, or an Autodesk update was interrupted.
- Record the exact Autodesk product and edition that fails.
- Open Settings with
Win+I. - Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Sign in to your Autodesk Account.
- Download the installer for the same product and compatible release.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If the Autodesk installer itself fails, repair or update the Autodesk Installer and retry. Do not fill the missing file manually from another computer, because the replacement may not match the product’s other ShapeManager files or dependencies.

A clean uninstall should be a last resort. Autodesk clean-uninstall procedures can remove Autodesk software, residual files, registry entries, licensing information, and shared components. Confirm that you are prepared to reinstall every Autodesk product you still need before using such a procedure.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined the DLL. This is especially relevant if the problem began immediately after an update, cleanup, migration, or security scan.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the Autodesk program stopped starting.
- Expand any entry that names
asmga80a.dllor the Autodesk installation. - Check the detected file path and action.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from a trusted Autodesk installation.
- The path belongs to the affected Autodesk product or its shared components.
- The security product’s analysis supports a false positive.
- You have confirmed that the Autodesk installation itself was not modified by an untrusted installer.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can expose the device. If the origin is uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the Autodesk product from its official installer instead.
After restoring a trusted file, update the security product and run another scan. If the file is quarantined again, do not keep restoring it. Treat the installation as damaged and reinstall Autodesk.
Fix 6: Confirm the architecture and file location
The catalogued asmga80a.dll builds are 32-bit. That does not mean every Autodesk program using ShapeManager is 32-bit. A 64-bit Autodesk executable may require a different component build or may be failing because one of its dependencies is missing.

Use these checks:
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if Windows provides that column.
- Check whether the affected process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also right-click the application executable, select Properties, and inspect the Details tab, although it may not clearly state the architecture.
If the program is 32-bit, it usually needs its private DLLs in the application’s own directory or an Autodesk component directory selected by the installer. If the program is 64-bit, do not copy the catalogued 32-bit file into its directory as a substitute.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not copy asmga80a.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another Autodesk product’s directory
- A game folder
- A random directory listed in an online answer
Windows applications use defined DLL search behavior, and a private application DLL placed in a global directory can create version conflicts or security problems. The correct location is established by the Autodesk installer, not by the filename.
Fix 7: Check whether the named DLL or a dependency is missing
Windows can display “The specified module could not be found” even when asmga80a.dll exists. In that situation, Windows may be unable to load another DLL required by asmga80a.dll.
Check the expected application directory:
- Return to the executable path identified earlier.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Look for
asmga80a.dll. - Do not replace it immediately if it exists.
- Note whether its location is inside the Autodesk installation.
- Check the file’s Properties and Digital Signatures tab, when available.
The absence of a digital signature alone does not establish that a file is malicious, and a filename alone cannot establish that it is safe. The file’s origin, path, signature information, antivirus result, and relationship to the Autodesk installation all matter.
If the file exists but the program still reports a module error, repair the complete Autodesk installation. This restores the dependency set rather than treating one filename in isolation.

Windows integrity checks are secondary for this problem because asmga80a.dll is an Autodesk application component, not a documented protected Windows file. Use them after repairing Autodesk, or when other Windows applications also show loading and system-file errors.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Autodesk application.
Do not close the Command Prompt while either scan is working. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, repeat the Autodesk repair path and review the exact SFC result rather than repeatedly downloading DLLs.

If you want a guided way to identify damaged Windows components instead of repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; repairs are completed by the full version, but repairing or reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for this application file.
Fix 9: Do not install unrelated runtimes automatically
Several common troubleshooting suggestions do not match the evidence for this file.
Visual C++ Redistributable
asmga80a.dll is an Autodesk ShapeManager module, not a Microsoft runtime. Install or repair Visual C++ only if the complete error, Autodesk requirements, or dependency analysis identifies a missing runtime.
If a Visual C++ package is required, its architecture must match the application. A 32-bit program generally needs the x86 package, while a 64-bit program generally needs the x64 package. Installing both does not replace a missing Autodesk component.
DirectX
There is no established evidence that DirectX is the primary cause of an asmga80a.dll loading error. Do not install a random DirectX package as the first response.
.NET
.NET can be required by an Autodesk installer or user interface, but it does not replace ShapeManager. Add or repair it only when the Autodesk installer or the application specifically reports a .NET requirement.
Drivers
A driver update is not a confirmed primary fix for this DLL. Check drivers only when the application also reports graphics, display, or device failures.
If you are manually checking several hardware vendors and trying to determine which of many installed drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the driver installation is completed by the full version, and it does not replace repairing the Autodesk installation.
Fix 10: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help when the problem began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or software removal.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs but normally does not affect personal files. It is not a substitute for backing up important work, and it may not restore an Autodesk installation cleanly. If the error remains, repair or reinstall Autodesk.
Why downloading asmga80a.dll is a bad fix
A separate DLL download can contain malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or a file intended for a different product. It also does not restore dependencies, installer registration, shared Autodesk components, or the product’s expected directory structure.

Even if copying a downloaded file makes the first message disappear, the application may then fail with another loading error. The correct source is the official Autodesk installer, Autodesk Access, Autodesk Account, or the official Shared Components installer.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file. A DLL is not automatically a self-registering component merely because its filename ends in .dll. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. ShapeManager runtime files are not documented as components that should be registered this way.

Collect these details before contacting Autodesk support:
- The exact error text.
- The name and full path of the failing executable.
- The Autodesk product and release installed.
- Whether
asmga80a.dllexists beside the executable or in an Autodesk shared-components directory. - Whether antivirus quarantined or removed it.
- The Event Viewer application error.
- Whether the failure began after an update, cleanup, migration, or uninstall.
- Any Autodesk installer error and its logs.
- The result of the Autodesk repair or reinstall.
- Whether other Autodesk products still start.
If only one non-Autodesk application fails, repair that application first. If every Autodesk product fails, focus on shared components and the Autodesk Installer rather than copying a DLL between product folders.
FAQ
Is asmga80a.dll a Windows file?
No. Available evidence identifies it as an Autodesk ShapeManager application component. It is not a standard Windows system DLL.
Is asmga80a.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe or malicious. Verify its path, origin, signature information, and antivirus status. A copy installed by a trusted Autodesk installer is different from a copy downloaded from an unknown source.
Recommended Free Tools
Which Autodesk product installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the exact parent product. Autodesk products can share ShapeManager components, so identify the executable named in the error before repairing or reinstalling.
Should I install the 32-bit DLL into SysWOW64?
No. Do not manually copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. The catalogued file is 32-bit, but its correct location is determined by the Autodesk product installer and its architecture.
Does regsvr32 asmga80a.dll fix the problem?
Normally, no. This is not documented as a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. Repair the Autodesk installation instead.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Only when the complete error or the Autodesk product specifically identifies that dependency. None is the primary confirmed fix for asmga80a.dll itself.
What is the safest fix?
Use Autodesk Access or Autodesk Account to update the product and shared components. If that fails, repair the product through Control Panel when available, or reinstall the exact Autodesk product from its official installer.
