asp51.dll is a Microsoft Internet Information Services file from the IIS 5.1 and Windows XP era, not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 runtime. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load, repair the affected IIS installation or legacy application instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
asp51.dll is the Active Server Pages engine associated with Internet Information Services. Microsoft lists it under the IIS directory:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
%WINDIR%System32inetsrvasp51.dll
Its name points specifically to IIS 5.1, principally associated with Windows XP Professional and Windows XP 64-bit Edition. Microsoft records historical versions for those systems, including version 5.1.2600.1125. A later Windows XP Service Pack 3 security update lists version 5.1.2600.6007.

These records describe historical Microsoft-serviced files, not a universal download package. The correct file depended on the Windows edition, architecture, service-pack level, and installed updates. Microsoft’s IIS and Classic ASP overview explains that Classic ASP was included with older IIS releases but became an optional IIS component beginning with IIS 6.0.

asp51.dll versus asp.dll
The names are related, but they are not interchangeable.
asp51.dllis associated with the IIS 5.1 ASP engine used on Windows XP-era systems.asp.dllis the normal Classic ASP module found in later IIS installations.- Enabling Classic ASP on Windows 10 or Windows 11 does not recreate the old XP
asp51.dll. - Copying
asp.dlland renaming it toasp51.dllis not a valid repair.
That distinction is important. A program requesting the exact asp51.dll name may have a hard-coded dependency on an old IIS installation rather than a genuinely missing Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file.
Common causes of the error
The wording can help identify the cause, but it does not prove that the named file itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found,” for example, can also mean that a dependency required by the file is missing or incompatible.

Before repairing anything
First identify which program is requesting the file.
- Note the complete error message and the executable name shown in its title bar.
- If the message appears while opening a desktop application, it is likely that application making the request.
- If it appears when browsing to an
.asppage, check the IIS site, application pool, and Event Viewer. - Check whether IIS is installed:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Look for Internet Information Services.
- Do not assume the presence of an
.aspwebsite meansasp51.dllbelongs on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Modern IIS may useasp.dllinstead.
If the file exists, right-click it, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. A historical Microsoft file should be verified by its original location and Microsoft signature, not merely by its filename.
Fix 1: Repair or install IIS Classic ASP
Use this fix when the error occurs while hosting a Classic ASP website or when the affected computer is supposed to run IIS.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
text
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Expand Internet Information Services.
- Expand World Wide Web Services.
- Expand Application Development Features.
- Select ASP.
- If the website requires it, also select ISAPI Extensions.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to install the components.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the website again.
Microsoft documents the ASP feature through its IIS ASP configuration guidance.
If IIS was already enabled, clear ASP, select OK, restart, and then enable it again. This refreshes the Windows feature registration, but it does not install the XP-era asp51.dll filename.
Windows Server
On Windows Server:
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage.
- Choose Add Roles and Features.
- Continue to Server Roles.
- Expand Web Server (IIS).
- Expand Web Server.
- Expand Application Development.
- Select ASP.
- Select ISAPI Extensions if the application requires them.
- Complete the wizard and restart if requested.
The documented PowerShell starting point is:

The available feature names vary by Windows Server release. Microsoft provides the relevant Install-WindowsFeature documentation.

Check the IIS application after installation
If the website still fails:
- Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
- Expand the computer name.
- Expand Sites.
- Select the affected site.
- Open Handler Mappings.
- Confirm that the site has an ASP handler.
- Select Application Pools.
- Check that the site’s application pool is running.
- Review Event Viewer under Windows Logs and Application for the matching failure.
If the website specifically requests asp51.dll, enabling current Classic ASP may not satisfy it. That usually indicates an old application or migration problem, not an incomplete Windows feature installation.
Fix 2: Repair Windows system files
Use System File Checker and DISM when the error began after Windows corruption, an interrupted update, a failed cleanup, malware removal, or disk trouble.
These commands are most useful on supported Windows versions. They repair protected Windows files and the component store, but they will not manufacture an XP-only asp51.dll on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
DISM may take time and may appear to pause. Do not close the window while it is working.
Run System File Checker
After restarting:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the original program or IIS website.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
If SFC says it found and repaired corrupted files, test again. If it says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, install pending Windows updates, restart, and repeat SFC. If the exact error remains on Windows 10 or Windows 11, identify the application requesting asp51.dll; system repair will not convert current IIS into IIS 5.1.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows versions and interpreting SFC/DISM results is impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan showing what it finds; repairs are completed with the full version, and it is not required for IIS repair.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a genuine legacy system file, but do not assume every detection is a false positive.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the detection related to
asp51.dll. - Expand it and record the detection name, original path, and date shown.
- Do not restore the file merely because an application requests it.
- Verify that the original path was the expected IIS directory.
- Verify the Microsoft digital signature when possible.
- Run a full malware scan.
- If the detection appears suspicious, submit the file and detection details to Microsoft instead of allowing it.
Microsoft explains quarantine and restore behavior in its Protection History guidance. Restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again, which is a reason to investigate rather than repeatedly restore it.
If malware removal preceded the error, change important passwords from a clean device, preserve useful scan details, and consider System Restore, a repair installation, or migration to a supported operating system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 4: Repair the legacy application or IIS installation
Use this path when the error appears immediately after launching an old program, restoring an old website, or moving software from Windows XP.

On Windows XP or a legacy Windows Server installation
Do not use a modern IIS package to replace an old XP component.
- Back up the application and website files.
- Open Control Panel.
- Open Add or Remove Programs on Windows XP, or Programs and Features on a later legacy Windows Server release.
- Open Windows Components or Turn Windows features on or off, depending on the system.
- Locate Internet Information Services.
- Confirm that the relevant IIS and ASP components are selected.
- Apply the change.
- Provide the original Windows installation media or matching service-pack media if requested.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the website or application.
On Windows XP, Microsoft’s historical file records show different asp51.dll sizes for x86 and x64 systems. Do not substitute an x86 file on a 64-bit installation, or an older service-pack file on a system with later updates. The correct source is the matching Windows installation and servicing media, not a general-purpose DLL archive.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11
If an old application demands asp51.dll:
- Check the application vendor’s documentation for a supported Windows version.
- Install the latest supported version of the application.
- Run the application’s own repair option if available:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair is unavailable or unsuccessful, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official installer.
- If the program still requires the exact XP filename, run it in its supported legacy environment or migrate it to software that supports current Windows.
Installing current Classic ASP can provide the later IIS ASP module, but it does not promise compatibility with a program that was built specifically for IIS 5.1.
Fix 5: Check architecture and dependent modules
Windows error messages can be misleading when 32-bit and 64-bit components are mixed.
Check all of the following:
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether IIS and its application pool are configured for the application.
- Whether the requested file belongs to the same Windows release as the program.
- Whether the file exists in the expected IIS directory.
- Whether the error names a missing dependency rather than the main file.
- Whether a migration copied the application without installing its server prerequisites.
Do not copy a 64-bit file into a 32-bit application directory, or the reverse. Do not place an old system DLL in System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder simply to make the message disappear.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the broader error points there
A graphics, storage, chipset, or other driver is not the normal source of asp51.dll. Updating drivers will not recreate an IIS component. Use this step only when the application also reports hardware initialization failures, crashes after a device change, or a separate dependent-module error.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install the driver if Windows finds one.
- Restart the computer.
- If the problem began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.
For a cleaner repair, download drivers only from the computer, motherboard, or device manufacturer. Outbyte Driver Updater can provide a free scan showing which drivers it identifies; installation is completed with the full version, and it is not required to repair IIS.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why downloading asp51.dll is usually the wrong fix
Random DLL download sites sites create several risks:
- The file may contain malware.
- The version may belong to a different Windows edition.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- The file may be unsigned or modified.
- A dependent module may still be missing.
- Copying it may hide the real IIS or application-installation problem.
- A manually copied file may be overwritten or removed by servicing and security software.
Microsoft’s public documentation provides historical file records and IIS installation guidance, but not a current universal asp51.dll download package. Use Windows Features, matching Microsoft installation media, Windows repair tools, or the application’s official installer instead.
Do not run:
regsvr32 asp51.dll
as a general repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, as described in Microsoft’s Regsvr32 documentation. The IIS ASP engine is loaded through IIS configuration and handler mappings, not normally repaired by manually registering it.

Security and migration advice
Classic ASP is legacy server technology. If you still need it, keep the site behind appropriate network controls, apply supported Windows and IIS updates where available, restrict administrative access, and avoid exposing an old server directly to the public internet.

FAQ
Is asp51.dll a Windows 11 system file?
No. It is associated with IIS 5.1 and Windows XP-era installations. Windows 11 may support Classic ASP through IIS features, but that does not mean it includes the exact asp51.dll file.
Is asp51.dll the same as asp.dll?
No. Later IIS versions generally use asp.dll. Renaming or substituting it for asp51.dll is not a supported repair.
Should I download asp51.dll from a DLL website?
No. The file may be malicious, mismatched, or unable to fix the underlying IIS dependency. Restore the matching Microsoft component or repair the application instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will SFC restore asp51.dll?
Only if the file belongs to the Windows installation being repaired and is protected by that system’s component store. SFC on Windows 10 or Windows 11 will not create an XP-only file.
Do I need to register the file with regsvr32?
Normally, no. IIS loads its ASP engine through IIS configuration and handler mappings. regsvr32 is not a general solution for this error.
Why does Windows say the module cannot be found when the file exists?
The named file may depend on another missing or incompatible module. Architecture mismatches, damaged IIS configuration, and missing handler components can produce similar wording.
What should I do after malware removal?
Run a full security scan, review the detection details, and verify the original file path and signature before restoring anything. If system damage is broader, use backup recovery, System Restore where available, a repair installation, or migration to a supported system.

Why does enabling Classic ASP not fix my old program?
The program may require the exact IIS 5.1 asp51.dll name or another XP-era dependency. Current IIS may provide asp.dll instead. In that situation, update or reinstall the program, use its supported legacy environment, or migrate it.
