aspnet_filter.dll is a Microsoft ASP.NET ISAPI filter, so first record which program reports it, when the error appears, and whether the affected Windows or IIS workload is 32-bit or 64-bit. If the message comes from IIS, an ASP.NET site, or a legacy installer, repair the matching .NET Framework and IIS components rather than downloading a loose DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, answer these questions:
- Which program displays the error? Check the window title, Event Viewer, IIS logs, or the installer name.
- When does it happen? Note whether it appears while an IIS site starts, when an installer runs, or when an ordinary desktop application opens.
- Does the referenced file path exist? The correct location is normally under
Microsoft.NETFrameworkorFramework64, notSystem32. - Is the application pool using the matching architecture? A 32-bit filter cannot load in a 64-bit worker process, and the reverse also applies.
- Did the problem begin after an update, IIS change, cleanup utility, Windows upgrade, or antivirus action?
Microsoft documents aspnet_filter.dll as a Win32 ISAPI filter used by ASP.NET. IIS stores it as an executable path in its ISAPI filter configuration, where architecture preconditions determine which worker process can load it. Microsoft’s ASP.NET HTTP Runtime documentation explains the ASP.NET role, while IIS module documentation describes how IIS uses modules and filters.
Where aspnet_filter.dll should be
Typical framework locations include:
%windir%Microsoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727aspnet_filter.dll
%windir%Microsoft.NETFramework64v2.0.50727aspnet_filter.dll
%windir%Microsoft.NETFrameworkv4.0.30319aspnet_filter.dll
%windir%Microsoft.NETFramework64v4.0.30319aspnet_filter.dll
Framework contains the 32-bit copy. Framework64 contains the 64-bit copy. The exact version directory must match the ASP.NET installation and IIS configuration. Older ASP.NET 2.0 and 3.5 applications may require the v2.0.50727 path, while ASP.NET 4.x applications generally use v4.0.30319.

If Windows reports that a path cannot be found, the matching .NET Framework or ASP.NET component may be missing or damaged. If the file exists, continue to the IIS configuration and bitness checks below.
Fix 1: Repair the application or installer that reports the error
A normal desktop application should not usually bundle or load aspnet_filter.dll directly. If a legacy installer or application requests it, the request may come from an embedded ASP.NET setup component, an incomplete installation, or a damaged application configuration.
Try the product’s own repair path first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps → Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the menu beside it and choose Modify, Repair, or Advanced options, if available.
- Restart Windows and run the application again.
For a setup program, download a fresh installer only from the application’s official publisher and run it with Run as administrator. If the program has a launcher with Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair, use that function.
If the same error appears only for one legacy program, reinstalling that program remains the definitive application-specific fix. If IIS also reports the file, repair the server components instead of repeatedly reinstalling the desktop program.

For an IIS-hosted ASP.NET site, install the framework version the application actually requires. .NET Framework 3.5 supports older ASP.NET 2.0 and 3.5 applications and can coexist with .NET Framework 4.x. Microsoft provides the Windows .NET Framework installation guidance.
Use Windows Features
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Expand .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) if the application is older.
- Expand .NET Framework 4.8 Advanced Services.
- Expand Internet Information Services.
- Under World Wide Web Services, expand Application Development Features.
- Enable the ASP.NET feature appropriate to the installed framework.
- Select OK and allow Windows to install the components.
- Restart the computer or server.
On Windows Server, open Server Manager → Add Roles and Features and select the required IIS and ASP.NET role services. The label may appear as ASP.NET 4.8 on current Server Manager versions. Older Windows versions may show ASP.NET 4.5 or a similar label. Microsoft’s ASP.NET feature installation instructions explain the supported feature-based method.
For supported systems, install or repair the .NET Framework 4.8.1 Runtime, not the Developer Pack, unless you are developing software. Use Microsoft’s official .NET Framework 4.8.1 download page.
On Windows 11 version 26H1 and later, .NET Framework 3.5 and ASP.NET 3.5 feature handling has additional version-specific requirements. Follow Microsoft’s Windows 11 .NET Framework 3.5 guidance rather than forcing an older installation method.

Re-register legacy ASP.NET 4 components
For older ASP.NET 4 deployments, open an elevated Command Prompt and run the command matching the server architecture:
%windir%Microsoft.NETFrameworkv4.0.30319aspnet_regiis.exe -iru
For a server that must support both 32-bit and 64-bit applications, run both:
%windir%Microsoft.NETFrameworkv4.0.30319aspnet_regiis.exe -iru
%windir%Microsoft.NETFramework64v4.0.30319aspnet_regiis.exe -iru
Restart IIS afterward:
iisreset
A successful result is that the ASP.NET site starts without the missing or load failure. Do not use aspnet_regiis.exe -I to install ASP.NET 4.5 on Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, or later. Microsoft directs administrators to use Windows Features, Server Manager, or DISM instead. See the ASP.NET registration guidance.
Fix 3: Correct the IIS filter path
A file can exist while IIS still points to an old framework directory, a misspelled path, or the wrong architecture.
Recommended Free Tools
Check in IIS Manager
- Press Windows key, type IIS, and open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
- Select the server node in the left pane.
- Open ISAPI Filters.
- Find the entry referring to ASP.NET.
- Double-click it and inspect the Executable path.
- Confirm that the path points to an existing Microsoft.NET copy, such as:
C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v4.0.30319aspnet_filter.dll
- Correct the path if necessary.
- Recycle the affected application pool and test the site.
You can inspect the configuration from an elevated Command Prompt:
%windir%system32inetsrvAppCmd.exe list config /section:system.webServer/isapiFilters
The path must be valid, and the filter’s bitness precondition must agree with the worker process. Microsoft documents the physical path and bitness settings in the IIS ISAPI filter configuration reference.
If the entry is stale and no longer required by the application, remove it only after confirming that the site does not depend on it. An invalid filter configuration can produce an HTTP 500.0 error. Microsoft describes this failure mode in its IIS ISAPI filter troubleshooting guidance.
Fix 4: Match the application-pool architecture
A common “could not be loaded” error is actually a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch.
Rank #3
- Open IIS Manager.
- Select Application Pools.
- Right-click the affected pool and choose Advanced Settings.
- Find Enable 32-Bit Applications.
- Set it to True for a 32-bit application and matching
Frameworkfilter. - Set it to False for a 64-bit application and matching
Framework64filter. - Click OK.
- Recycle the pool and test the application.
Microsoft documents this setting as enable32BitAppOnWin64; its default is false in the IIS application-pool configuration reference.
Do not switch the setting blindly on a production site. Confirm the application’s architecture and the filter path first. If the site uses a 32-bit database provider or native extension, changing the pool to 64-bit may create a different failure.
Fix 5: Repair Windows component corruption
If the framework is installed and the IIS path is correct, Windows component corruption may be preventing the file or its dependencies from loading.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test IIS again. Microsoft documents these repair commands in its Windows repair guidance, and explains SFC behavior in the System File Checker documentation.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteRepeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the correct Microsoft component remains the proper fix for an ASP.NET installation problem.
If DISM fails, record the exact error, ensure Windows Update is working, restart, and run the command again. If SFC reports files it could not repair, inspect the servicing state before reinstalling IIS or .NET Framework.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined the file after an update or repair.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
aspnet_filter.dll. - Check the original path before taking action.
Restore a quarantined file only if it is in the expected Microsoft.NETFramework or Framework64 directory and its Microsoft signature is valid. Otherwise, reinstall the official .NET Framework or IIS component and run a full malware scan. Microsoft explains these decisions in its Protection History guidance.

Drivers are not the normal source of an aspnet_filter.dll failure. Do not install graphics, DirectX, or Visual C++ packages as a generic response; they do not provide this ASP.NET/IIS filter. If Event Viewer identifies a failing storage, network, security, or virtualization driver at the same time, update that specific device.

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category named in the error or Event Viewer entry.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and retest IIS.
- If the problem began after a driver update, open Properties → Driver and use Roll Back Driver, if available.
Manually matching drivers across many devices is slow and can leave stale versions behind. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Use this only when a driver is implicated, not as a substitute for repairing ASP.NET.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not start with:
regsvr32 aspnet_filter.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. IIS ISAPI filters are configured through IIS, not normally registered like a desktop COM component. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in the regsvr32 reference.
Likewise, do not copy aspnet_filter.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. A downloaded file can have the wrong architecture, servicing level, dependencies, or signature, and copying it may conceal the real IIS configuration problem.

Collect the exact failure instead of replacing files repeatedly:
- Open Event Viewer.
- Go to Windows Logs → Application.
- Check entries created when the site or application failed.
- Record the HRESULT and any dependent module named.
- Review the IIS log for the same request.
- Run the

- Check permissions on the framework directory and any security-software events.
If the problem began immediately after a known system change and all repair paths fail, System Restore may be considered as a last resort. It can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs to an earlier restore point. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
FAQ
Is aspnet_filter.dll a game DLL?
No. It is documented as an ASP.NET IIS ISAPI filter. A desktop program or game that requests it may have an installer or legacy web component with an unusual dependency, but the file is not a generic game runtime.
Should I download the DLL from a DLL website?
No. Use Windows Features, the official .NET Framework Runtime, IIS role services, or Windows servicing. A loose download may be malicious or incompatible and often leaves the broken IIS configuration unchanged.
Is aspnet_filter.dll stored in System32?
Normally, no. Check the relevant Microsoft.NETFramework or Framework64 directory instead.
Do I need both .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.x?
Only if the applications require them. Older ASP.NET applications may need .NET Framework 3.5, while newer legacy ASP.NET applications may use 4.x. They can coexist.
What if the application is not using IIS?
Identify the process that requested the file. Repair or reinstall that application from its official installer, then inspect antivirus quarantine. If no IIS or ASP.NET component is involved, do not force IIS changes onto the machine.
What is the quickest reliable fix?
For an IIS server, verify the framework path and application-pool bitness, then repair the matching .NET Framework and ASP.NET IIS feature. For a single legacy application, use its repair or reinstall option.
