If Windows says s32stat.dll is missing, the safest fix is to identify the program requesting it and repair or remove that program rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- The executable named in the message, such as
SYSDOC32.EXE. - Whether the error appears when Windows starts, when opening Norton software, or after launching another application.
- Whether you recently uninstalled Norton, Norton Utilities, Norton SystemWorks, or another Symantec product.
- Whether the affected program is old 32-bit software running on 64-bit Windows.
- Whether your antivirus recently quarantined a Symantec file.
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because s32stat.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “S32STAT.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading S32STAT.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because s32stat.dll was not found.”
These are Windows loader messages. They do not mean that Windows owns the file.
What s32stat.dll belongs to
Public file records identify s32stat.dll as the Symantec Drive Status Library, associated with SYMSTAT and published historically by Symantec Corporation. The strongest historical connection is to older Norton Utilities and Norton SystemWorks components, including Norton Disk Doctor and its SYSDOC32.EXE program.
It is generally described as a 32-bit DLL. Public records commonly show a build around version 24.0.0.0 and approximately 31 KB, but older Norton installation records show different builds and sizes. Treat those details as identification clues, not as a specification for every copy.

Fix 1: Identify and repair the original Symantec program
This is the correct path if you still use the Norton or Symantec utility that displays the error.
Find the calling program
- Read the complete error dialog and write down the executable name.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps and look for Norton, Symantec, Norton Utilities, Norton SystemWorks, or an entry pointing to
SYSDOC32.EXE. - Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps and then Apps & features.
- Search for the corresponding Norton or Symantec product.
- If it is not listed, open Control Panel, select Uninstall a program, and check Programs and Features.
Do not assume that the newest Norton product is the same application that originally installed this DLL. Current Norton software does not necessarily replace old Norton Utilities or SystemWorks components.
Repair or reinstall it
If the application offers a repair option:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the matching Norton or Symantec program.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart Windows.
If repair is unavailable:
- Preserve any product key, configuration, or important data associated with the old utility.
- Use the original CD, backup, or legitimately retained installer for that exact product.
- Uninstall the damaged installation from Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the original application again.
- Restart once more and test the program that previously failed.
Use the complete installer rather than copying a single DLL from another computer. Different Norton generations may use different builds, and mixing files can replace a missing-file message with an “entry point not found” or incompatible-binary error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA successful repair means the original application opens without the s32stat.dll message and its normal disk or system functions work. If the same error remains, confirm that the repaired program and the executable named in the message are actually the same product.
Fix 2: Remove a stale startup reference
If you already removed the old Norton software and the error appears only when Windows starts, you may not need to reinstall anything. Windows may simply be trying to launch a leftover shortcut or scheduled task.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old Norton, Symantec, or
SYSDOC32.EXEentry. - Right-click the entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If the error does not return and you no longer need the old utility, leaving the entry disabled is usually sufficient. To remove it permanently, uninstall any remaining related program through Installed apps or Programs and Features.

Check the Startup folders
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
shell:startupand press Enter. - Remove only a shortcut that clearly points to the obsolete Norton or Symantec executable.
- Press Windows key + R again.
- Enter
shell:common startupand press Enter. - Check for the same type of obsolete shortcut.
Do not delete an unfamiliar item merely because its name looks old. Check its target by right-clicking it, selecting Properties, and reviewing the full path.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCheck Task Scheduler
- Open Start and type Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose names or actions clearly reference the removed Norton or Symantec product.
- Right-click a confirmed obsolete task and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If disabling the task stops the error, the problem was a stale startup reference rather than a missing Windows file.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
An antivirus product may have quarantined an old or unsigned Symantec file, but the filename alone does not prove that happened.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry referencing
s32stat.dllor the folder belonging to the affected Norton program. - Review the detected file path, detection name, and action taken.
Restore the file only if all of the following are true:
- The file is inside the genuine installation directory of the Norton or Symantec product.
- You still need that product.
- The quarantine record identifies the file clearly.
- The installation came from trusted original media or an intact backup.
If the path is a temporary folder, a user-writable folder, or an unexpected download location, do not restore it. Run a full scan and reinstall the complete application from trusted media instead.
Fix 4: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit situation
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still expects the DLL build and search path used by that application.
Do not copy s32stat.dll into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. Despite the confusing names, those folders serve different architecture roles. Indiscriminate copying can create loader conflicts and does not repair the application that supplied the DLL.

Instead:
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Open file location.
- Check whether the application directory contains its own DLL files.
- Right-click the main executable, select Properties, and open the Compatibility tab.
- If the software is clearly legacy, try Run this program in compatibility mode for an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK, and test the application.
Compatibility mode cannot create a missing DLL. It is useful only after the correct application files have been restored.
Fix 5: Scan for tampering or malware
A missing DLL is not, by itself, evidence of malware. An unexpected copy of a file with this name in a temporary or user-writable directory does deserve investigation.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan and select Scan now.
- Quarantine anything Windows Security identifies.
- Restart Windows after the scan completes.
Do not trust an unsigned replacement downloaded from an unknown source. The file may have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Norton release, or contain unwanted code.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Because s32stat.dll is a third-party application DLL, System File Checker normally will not restore it. These commands are still appropriate if Windows has broader problems, such as damaged built-in applications, update failures, or unexplained system corruption.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
Microsoft’s supported order is DISM first and SFC second. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but the same application error remains, that result is consistent with a missing third-party file rather than a Windows component problem.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it finds before its full version performs repairs, but reinstalling the Symantec application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the DLL.
Fix 7: Update drivers only if the error is part of a wider hardware problem
A display, storage, or chipset driver does not normally provide s32stat.dll. Do not install drivers merely because the filename appears in an error message.
Driver work is reasonable when the failed Norton utility is also reporting disk or hardware errors, Device Manager shows a warning, or Windows has broader device instability.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, with driver installation handled by its full version; the manual alternative is checking each hardware manufacturer’s current package and matching it carefully.
Do not expect a driver update to supply s32stat.dll. If the application itself is missing the file, repair or reinstall that application.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. There is no reliable evidence that s32stat.dll is such a component.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a general repair:
regsvr32 s32stat.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32s32stat.dll
They may produce an error about a missing entry point, an invalid module, or a path problem. They do not recreate a deleted file or repair the Norton program that needs it.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Do not use an unofficial DLL archive as the primary fix. Public records show differing historical builds, sizes, and architecture claims, so a downloaded copy may be the wrong file even when its name matches.

If the original installer is unavailable
If you no longer need the old program, remove the cause:
- Uninstall remaining Norton or Symantec components.
- Disable the related Startup app.
- Disable the confirmed obsolete Scheduled Task.
- Remove only verified shortcuts from the Startup folders.
- Restart Windows.
If you still need the application but cannot find its original installer, preserve its data and look for the original CD, organizational software archive, or a legitimate backup. Avoid replacing only s32stat.dll; the application may depend on several matching legacy files.
If reinstalling does not solve the issue, record the executable path, inspect the application directory, review compatibility settings, and check whether another dependent DLL fails next. The first missing file is not always the only damaged component.
FAQ
Is s32stat.dll part of Windows?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a Microsoft Windows component. It is associated with older Symantec software.
Which program usually requests it?
Historical evidence most strongly points to Norton Utilities and Norton SystemWorks components, particularly Norton Disk Doctor and SYSDOC32.EXE. The exact product cannot be determined from the filename alone.
Should I download s32stat.dll?
No. Use the complete original application installer or remove the stale reference if the application is no longer installed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I run SFC or DISM?
Only for broader Windows corruption. They normally do not restore a third-party Symantec DLL.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
Usually not. It is appropriate for registerable DLLs, and there is no reliable evidence that this file requires registration.
Why did the message appear after uninstalling Norton?
The uninstall may have removed a shared file while leaving a startup shortcut or scheduled task behind. In that situation, removing the leftover reference is safer than reinstalling an obsolete product.
Can a 32-bit Norton program run on 64-bit Windows?
Often, yes, but it still needs the matching 32-bit application files and may require compatibility settings. A random DLL from another release is not a safe substitute.
