aspupload.dll is a third-party component installed by Persits AspUpload. It is not a Windows file, so Windows cannot normally restore it through a standard system repair.
Before changing anything, complete this short diagnostic checklist:
- Which application fails: identify the IIS site, Classic ASP application, legacy CMS, COM+ package, or server-side program showing the error.
- When it fails: note whether the problem began after an update, migration, antivirus event, cleanup, restore, or server change.
- What message appears: distinguish “missing” or “module could not be found” from
Invalid ProgID,Server.CreateObject Failed, or “The component has expired.” - Which architecture is required: check whether the application pool and AspUpload component are 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Where the file is expected: look for the vendor installation rather than assuming it belongs in
C:WindowsSystem32.
What aspupload.dll belongs to
aspupload.dll is associated with AspUpload 2.01, developed by Persits Software, Inc. AspUpload is a server-side COM component for Classic ASP applications running under Microsoft IIS. It receives, saves, processes, and manages files uploaded through a browser.
It does not belong to:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Microsoft Visual C++
- DirectX
- .NET
- A standard Windows runtime
- A game installation unless that game bundles or calls an IIS application
The documented default installation folder is:
C:Program FilesPersits SoftwareAspUpload
The actual folder may differ on an older server or during a custom installation. A current Persits download page lists separate 32-bit and 64-bit AspUpload 3.1.0.4 installers. It does not provide a current official AspUpload 2.01 installer, so do not assume that the newest package is automatically suitable for an application built around AspUpload 2.x.

Fix 1: Identify the IIS application and restore AspUpload
This is the most likely and safest repair when the message says that aspupload.dll is missing.
Check whether the file is present
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Check the original AspUpload installation folder, especially:
text
C:Program FilesPersits SoftwareAspUpload - If the server uses a 32-bit installation on 64-bit Windows, also inspect:
text
C:Program Files (x86)Persits SoftwareAspUpload - Search the application’s deployment folder for
aspupload.dll. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and review General, Details, and Digital Signatures if available.
If the file is absent, do not copy a random replacement into System32. Restore the original AspUpload installation from one of these sources:
- The official Persits AspUpload installer
- The original software supplier’s deployment package
- A trusted backup of the affected server
- A known-good server running the same application and approved product version
The preferred repair is to run the vendor installer again. The installer is designed to place and register the component as part of the AspUpload deployment.
Reinstall from the vendor installer
- Download the correct AspUpload installer from Persits Software’s official download location, or obtain the original installer from the application vendor.
- Confirm whether the application requires the legacy AspUpload 2.x build or supports the current 3.x release.
- Close administration tools that may be using the component.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Keep the installation directory consistent with the existing application configuration unless you are deliberately migrating it.
- Restart IIS after installation:
bat
net stop iisadmin /y
net start w3svc
On newer Windows Server versions, use the IIS services or IIS Manager if the older service command is unavailable. - Open the affected application and perform the upload operation that previously failed.
A successful repair normally means the application can create its upload component and complete a test upload. If the same error remains, continue with the architecture and registration checks below.

A DLL can exist and still fail because the process loading it uses the wrong architecture.
You must match:
- The architecture of
aspupload.dll - The IIS application-pool setting
- The process hosting the Classic ASP application
A 32-bit AspUpload component generally needs to run in a 32-bit IIS worker process. A 64-bit component needs a 64-bit process.
Check the application-pool setting
- Press Windows key, type IIS, and open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
- In the left pane, expand the server name.
- Select Application Pools.
- Find the pool used by the failing site.
- Right-click it and select Advanced Settings.
- Locate Enable 32-Bit Applications.
- Record whether it is set to
TrueorFalse.
If the application uses a 32-bit AspUpload installation, set Enable 32-Bit Applications to True. If it uses a 64-bit component, leave the setting at False.
- Click OK.
- Right-click the application pool and choose Recycle.
- Test the site again.
Do not change this setting blindly on a production server. A legacy application may depend on other 32-bit COM components, while a newer deployment may require a 64-bit worker process.

The presence of a file named aspupload.dll alone does not establish that it is the correct build for your application.
Fix 3: Register the vendor-installed DLL
regsvr32 is appropriate for AspUpload because it is a COM component. It is not a general-purpose fix for every DLL error.
First locate the intended vendor-installed copy. Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Press Windows key.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Use the command that matches the DLL and IIS process.
For a 32-bit DLL:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32 "C:pathtoaspupload.dll"
For a 64-bit DLL:
%SystemRoot%System32regsvr32 "C:pathtoaspupload.dll"
For example, a vendor-installed copy might be registered with:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
regsvr32 "C:Program FilesPersits SoftwareAspUploadBinaspupload.dll"
Use the actual path on the server. Do not register every copy found during a search.
A successful command displays a message indicating that registration succeeded. Restart IIS afterward:
net stop iisadmin /y
net start w3svc
Then test the application.
If registration fails
A registration failure can indicate:
- The wrong
regsvr32architecture was used - The DLL is damaged
- A dependent module is missing
- The file came from an incomplete or incorrect installation
- The application is using a different copy
- The process lacks access to the file or its folder
Check the exact error text. If it mentions a module that cannot be found, the named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies does not. Reinstall the complete AspUpload package instead of downloading individual dependencies.
If registration succeeds but the application still reports Invalid ProgID or Server.CreateObject Failed, verify the application’s configuration and the DLL path. A successful registration does not prove that IIS is activating the intended installation.
Fix 4: Confirm Classic ASP and IIS components are installed
AspUpload is used by Classic ASP and IIS. If the server was rebuilt or migrated, the required IIS role services may be missing.
Enable IIS and Classic ASP
On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
optionalfeatures - Press Enter.
- Expand Internet Information Services.
- Expand World Wide Web Services.
- Expand Application Development Features.
- Select ASP.
- Select IIS Management Console if it is not already enabled.
- Click OK.
- Allow Windows to install the features.
- Restart IIS or restart the computer.
- Open the affected site and test the upload function.
On Windows Server, add the equivalent IIS role services through Server Manager:
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage, then Add Roles and Features.
- Choose the appropriate server.
- Select Web Server (IIS).
- Under Web Server, expand Application Development.
- Select ASP.
- Complete the wizard.
- Restart IIS and test the application.
Installing Classic ASP does not install aspupload.dll. It only supplies the IIS platform required by the application. AspUpload still has to be restored and registered separately.
Fix 5: Check for a wrong version or expired evaluation component
A deployment that worked with AspUpload 2.x may fail after someone replaces it with a different release. The current official download page lists AspUpload 3.1.0.4, not an official 2.01 package.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do not replace a legacy deployment simply because a newer installer is available. Persits describes backward compatibility in its version information, but each application still needs testing.
Check the version and deployment history:
- Open the AspUpload installation folder.
- Right-click
aspupload.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Record the displayed product and file information.
- Compare it with the application’s deployment records, backup, or original installer.
- Check whether the application’s ASP code or configuration expects a particular ProgID or AspUpload release.
An error such as:
The component has expired
is not the same as a missing-DLL error. It indicates that the component is present but an evaluation build or licensing state is being used. This can also appear after IIS continues using an old in-memory AspUpload 2.x copy.
Stop and restart IIS after replacing the DLL. If the problem is licensing-related, obtain the correct licensed installation or support from the software supplier.
Fix 6: Check IIS, COM+, permissions, and logs
If the file exists and registration succeeds, the failure may be in the deployment around it.

- Right-click the affected pool and choose Advanced Settings.
- Note the Identity.
- Check that this identity can read and execute the AspUpload installation folder and the application directory.
- Apply the minimum required permissions rather than granting broad write access to system folders.
The application may also need write permission on its upload destination. That is separate from permission to load the DLL.

Check COM+ configuration
If AspUpload is deployed through Component Services:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
comexp.msc - Press Enter.
- Expand Component Services, Computers, and My Computer.
- Open the relevant COM+ application.
- Locate the AspUpload component.
- Review its properties.
- Confirm that Allow IIS intrinsic properties is enabled under the component’s advanced settings when required by the deployment.
- Restart the COM+ application and IIS.
- Test the site.
Review logs
Check:
- Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application
- Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System
- IIS logs under the configured W3C logging directory
- The ASP application’s own error log
Record the exact error, the requested ProgID, the application-pool bitness, the DLL path, and the time of failure. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency rather than the named file itself.

If the file disappeared after a security scan or cleanup, inspect the antivirus history before restoring anything.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
aspupload.dllor the AspUpload installation directory. - Verify the file’s original path, publisher information, and source.
- Scan the installer and the server before restoring the file.
- Restore the file only when its provenance is confirmed and the application owner approves the action.
Do not create a permanent antivirus exclusion merely because the application needs the DLL. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, investigate the installation and security alert instead.
Fix 8: Repair broader Windows components only when evidence supports it
SFC and DISM repair Windows system components. They do not normally restore a third-party Persits AspUpload file.
Use them when other Windows files or services are also damaged.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Restart IIS.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC for Windows system-file repair.
Running these commands repeatedly will not replace a missing AspUpload installation. If the commands report that Windows files were repaired but aspupload.dll remains absent, return to the vendor installation or server backup.
If manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM is obscuring what actually changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling AspUpload remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 9: Update or reinstall related drivers only for a wider system problem
Drivers are not the normal cause of an AspUpload COM registration failure. Do not start with Device Manager unless the server also has broader hardware, storage, or operating-system problems.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories with warning icons.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- If the device is malfunctioning, right-click it again and choose Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows so the driver can be detected again.
- Re-test IIS and the application.
Do not replace unrelated runtime DLLs based on a generic loader message. If driver maintenance involves checking many hardware vendors and versions manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify available updates; its full version installs them, but it is not a substitute for restoring the correct AspUpload package.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download aspupload.dll from a generic DLL-index or file-repository site. A standalone copy may have:
- Malware or unwanted modifications
- The wrong AspUpload release
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing dependencies
- No valid registration information
- A licensing problem
- A path that does not match the application
It may also conceal the real cause, such as antivirus quarantine, a failed migration, a stale IIS worker process, or a missing COM registration.
Use the official Persits installer, the original application supplier, or a verified server backup. Persits documents copying the component to another server followed by registration as an administrator migration procedure. That does not make downloading an arbitrary copy safe.
Do not place an unverified file in C:WindowsSystem32. Keep AspUpload in its intended vendor installation directory and register that specific copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the error is really an IIS upload-limit problem
A functioning aspupload.dll does not remove IIS request-size limits. If small uploads work but larger uploads fail, inspect the application’s IIS request filtering settings.
In IIS Manager:
- Select the affected site or application.
- Open Request Filtering.
- Select Edit Feature Settings.
- Review the allowed content length.
- Compare it with the application’s required upload size.
- Apply a deliberate limit appropriate for the application.
- Restart or recycle the application pool.
- Test with a controlled file size.
Do not treat a request-size rejection as proof that the DLL is missing.
Final escalation checklist
Before escalating to the application vendor or server administrator, collect:
- The complete error message
- The application and IIS site name
- The requested ProgID
- The full path of the installed
aspupload.dll - File properties and digital-signature information
- AspUpload version information
- IIS application-pool name and 32-bit setting
- Windows version
- The exact
regsvr32command used and its result - Antivirus quarantine events
- Relevant IIS and Event Viewer entries
- Whether the failure began after an update, migration, restore, or cleanup
FAQ
Is aspupload.dll a Windows system file?
No. It belongs to Persits AspUpload, a third-party COM component used by Classic ASP and IIS applications.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Restore the correct AspUpload installation and register the vendor-installed copy with the matching regsvr32 utility.
Do I need regsvr32?
Usually, yes, when installing or moving this COM component. Use the 32-bit registration tool for a 32-bit DLL and the 64-bit tool for a 64-bit DLL, then restart IIS.
Why does the error remain after I copied the file?
The DLL may not be registered, IIS may be using another copy, the application pool may use the wrong architecture, or a dependent module may be missing.
Does SFC repair aspupload.dll?
Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, not third-party AspUpload components.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is AspUpload 3.1.0.4 a guaranteed replacement for AspUpload 2.01?
No. The vendor provides compatibility information, but a legacy application should be tested and its required version confirmed before upgrading.
What does “Invalid ProgID” mean?
It generally indicates that the ASP application cannot create the configured COM component. Check registration, the ProgID in the application, architecture, and the active IIS worker process.
What does “The component has expired” mean?
The component is present, but an evaluation build or licensing state is being used. Restarting IIS may remove a stale loaded copy, but licensing or version correction may still be required.
