The ASRock Fatal1ty Z370 Gaming K6 is a full-size ATX motherboard for Intel 8th-generation Coffee Lake processors, with support for selected 9th-generation CPUs when the BIOS is new enough. It remains useful for extending an existing DDR4-based system, but it is a legacy platform—not a sensible default for a new build in 2026. Before buying one, verify the exact CPU and BIOS version, and account for the M.2 slots disabling particular SATA ports.

What the Z370 Gaming K6 is—and what it is not

This is an ATX motherboard built around Intel’s Z370 chipset and LGA1151 socket, originally aimed at gaming PCs and unlocked-CPU overclocking. ASRock’s official specifications list four DDR4 slots, three PCIe x16-length slots, three PCIe x1 slots, two M.2 sockets, eight SATA ports, dual Gigabit Ethernet and Realtek ALC1220 audio.

Do not confuse it with the similarly named Fatal1ty Z370 Gaming-ITX/ac: that is a Mini-ITX model with a very different layout and expansion capacity. The Z370 Gaming K6 is also distinct from the Z270 Gaming K6 and later Z390 boards. Socket naming alone is not a compatibility guarantee: 6th- and 7th-generation LGA1151 processors are not supported on this Z370 board.

Specification Z370 Gaming K6
Form factor and chipset ATX; Intel Z370
CPU socket LGA1151; 8th-generation Intel Core target, with selected 9th-generation CPUs supported by BIOS

Expansion Three PCIe 3.0 x16-length slots and three PCIe 3.0 x1 slots
Storage Two Ultra M.2 sockets and eight SATA 6 Gb/s ports, subject to M.2 lane sharing
Networking and audio Two Intel Gigabit LAN ports; Realtek ALC1220-based audio
Wireless No integrated Wi-Fi

Which CPUs work, and what BIOS do they need?

8th-generation CPUs

The board was designed for 8th-generation Coffee Lake processors. Examples include the Core i3-8100 and i3-8350K, Core i5-8400 and i5-8600K, and Core i7-8700 and i7-8700K. Check ASRock’s CPU support list for the exact model before purchasing.

Selected 9th-generation CPUs

ASRock lists support for selected Coffee Lake Refresh processors, including the Core i5-9600K, Core i7-9700K and Core i9-9900K, subject to each processor’s support entry and minimum BIOS. For example, ASRock’s Core i9-9900K entry specifies BIOS P4.10 for the Gaming K6; the Core i5-9600K entry lists its own requirement. Do not assume every 9th-generation variant or stepping works simply because one model does.

Check BIOS before changing CPUs

  1. If the board boots with its current CPU, enter UEFI and note the BIOS version.
  2. Look up the exact replacement CPU and its minimum BIOS on ASRock’s support list.
  3. If an update is required, install it while the board is running a CPU supported by the current BIOS, and follow ASRock’s instructions.
  4. Do not assume the board can update without a CPU or has USB BIOS Flashback; confirm the update method in the manual.

Updating firmware is not a substitute for checking compatibility first. Never interrupt a BIOS update while it is in progress.

Memory: 64 GB maximum, with overclocking qualifications

The board has four DDR4 DIMM slots, supports dual-channel memory and lists a maximum capacity of 64 GB. ASRock specifies non-ECC unbuffered memory and ECC UDIMMs operating in non-ECC mode. XMP 2.0 is supported. Although the specification lists overclocked memory speeds up to DDR4-4333+, 8th-generation CPUs officially support memory up to DDR4-2666; higher speeds are overclocking profiles, not guaranteed results. Stability depends on the CPU’s memory controller, DIMM count, BIOS and kit.

  • Boost Your System’s Performance: Increase available memory for smoother multitasking, improved responsiveness and better performance when running memory-intensive applications.
  • Matched Specifically to Your Machine: OFFTEK selects the correct memory configuration for the computer shown in this listing, removing the uncertainty from choosing a compatible upgrade.
  • We Do the Technical Checking for You: There is no need to compare memory speeds, voltages, form factors or other technical details, as the upgrade has been matched to the machine’s supported requirements.
  • Extend the Life of Your Computer: Increasing the available memory can help your existing machine remain productive for longer, offering a cost-effective alternative to replacing the complete system.
  • Quick and Straightforward Upgrade: Memory is normally simple to install and requires no software installation; shut down and disconnect the machine before fitting and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Use a matched two- or four-module kit and consult ASRock’s memory support list where possible.
  • First confirm the system is stable at default settings; then enable XMP.
  • If XMP prevents booting, clear UEFI settings, try a lower memory speed and test one module at a time in the recommended paired slots.
  • Keep memory voltage within the kit manufacturer’s documented range. Four modules can be harder to stabilize than two.

Two M.2 sockets, but not eight independent SATA ports

The board provides six Intel Z370 SATA 6 Gb/s ports and two additional ASMedia ASM1061 SATA 6 Gb/s ports. Its two Ultra M.2 sockets accept PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe drives and M.2 SATA drives; NVMe boot and Intel Optane are listed as supported. Intel-controlled SATA ports support RAID. The key installation caveat is that M.2 use shares resources with specific SATA connections.

M.2 socket Shared SATA ports Practical implication
M2_1 SATA3_0 and SATA3_1 Check the manual’s drive-type and configuration notes before using these SATA ports alongside this M.2 socket.
M2_2 SATA3_4 and SATA3_5 Check the manual’s drive-type and configuration notes before using these SATA ports alongside this M.2 socket.

ASRock identifies these resource-sharing relationships in its storage specifications; consult the board manual for the exact behavior for the installed drive and configuration. NVMe and M.2 SATA are different interfaces, so do not assume they disable ports identically. Eight SATA connectors on the board do not mean all eight remain available in every two-M.2 setup. The ASMedia-controlled ports may also differ from Intel ports in RAID and boot behavior.

A PCIe Gen4 NVMe drive can operate in a compatible PCIe Gen3 M.2 slot, but at the platform’s Gen3 ceiling; this board does not provide PCIe 4.0. Choose an SSD for its price and workload rather than paying extra for a newer interface the board cannot use at full speed.

Graphics cards and expansion slots

The three PCIe 3.0 x16-length slots operate at x16 with one card, x8/x8 with two, and x8/x8/x4 in the listed three-slot arrangement. The board also has three PCIe 3.0 x1 slots. ASRock lists legacy AMD CrossFire and NVIDIA SLI-era support, but multi-GPU support is not a compelling reason to buy a gaming board today.

A modern graphics card can generally work in the primary PCIe 3.0 slot, but physical fit and feature support are separate questions. Check card length and cooler thickness, since a large GPU may cover neighboring slots. The board remains limited to PCIe 3.0, and features such as Resizable BAR or modern firmware behavior should be verified for the specific setup rather than assumed.

Connectivity, networking and onboard audio

USB and displays

Rear I/O includes two USB 3.1 Gen2 10 Gb/s ports—one Type-A and one Type-C—along with USB 3.1 Gen1 ports. A front-panel USB Type-C header is available if the case has the matching cable. These launch-era USB labels do not mean USB4. The board also provides HDMI, DVI-D and D-Sub video outputs, which work only when the installed CPU has integrated graphics.

  • 🔺Important Notes: The minimum hardware requirements for upgrading to Windows 11 via TPM 2.0 are as follows: a 1 GHz or faster 64-bit processor (dual-core/multi-core), 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage space, firmware supporting UEFI Secure Boot and TPM 2.0, a DirectX 12-compatible graphics card, and a display with a resolution of 720p or higher.
  • 🔧Purpose a: Resolve TPM 2.0 verification issues when upgrading to Windows 11, enabling it to function as an independent encryption chip, providing secure storage for sensitive data, and enhancing overall security;

Dual Gigabit LAN

Two Intel Gigabit Ethernet ports can suit a lab, storage machine or specialized network setup, but they are not multi-gigabit ports and do not automatically make ordinary internet access faster. ASRock’s Windows 10-era teaming references should not be read as a guarantee of teaming support in every current operating system or network configuration.

ALC1220 audio

The Realtek ALC1220 codec, ASRock Purity Sound 4 and Creative Sound Blaster Cinema 3 provide a feature-rich onboard audio package for the board’s generation. Branding does not guarantee a particular sound quality: headphones or speakers, driver support, system noise and correct front-panel wiring all affect the result. It is not a replacement for a dedicated interface where recording or demanding headphone use is the priority.

Overclocking: capable hardware, variable results

ASRock advertises digital PWM, a 12-power-phase design, 60A power chokes, Dual-Stack MOSFETs and heatsinks connected by a heat pipe. It supports unlocked K-series CPUs and BCLK tuning. A period eTeknix review reported strong overclocking performance relative to its Z370 comparison group; that result reflects a particular board, CPU sample, BIOS, cooling setup and workload, not a guarantee for a board bought years later.

CPU silicon quality varies, and a sustained all-core i9-9900K load places a different demand on power delivery and cooling than an i7-8700K. Phase count alone does not establish VRM quality. Overclocking raises power use, temperature and stress, so provide airflow across the VRM heatsinks and test stability with the workloads that matter to you. On a used board, check BIOS hardware readings, CPU package temperature, any exposed VRM/MOS temperature, memory stability, WHEA errors and behavior under sustained load.

Used-board inspection and test checklist

Inspect before paying

  • Check the socket pins under bright light, and look for corrosion or residue near the battery, VRM and rear I/O.
  • Look for cracked PCIe slots, damaged fan headers, missing M.2 standoffs or screws, and bent rear-I/O shield tabs.
  • Confirm it is the full-size ATX Gaming K6, not the Mini-ITX/ac model. It has no integrated Wi-Fi, so a Wi-Fi antenna is not a missing accessory.
  • Ask whether the I/O shield, M.2 hardware, SATA cables, manual and box are included; missing accessories can affect convenience and value.

Ask for functional evidence

  • A POST or UEFI screen showing BIOS version and CPU model.
  • Memory capacity and stable operation with XMP, if the seller claims it works.
  • Detection of drives on M.2 and SATA, plus tests of both LAN ports, USB Type-A and Type-C, audio output and graphics-card operation.
  • Dr. Debug display operation and stable behavior under a sustained workload.

ASRock’s board manual covers layout, installation and diagnostic references. Informal community listings offer only rough price signals: examples include a 2026 sale post and older example and another older example. These are individual listings, not verified current transaction averages; condition, bundle, location and proof of testing matter more than a historic asking price.

Troubleshooting a no-boot or no-display system

  1. Turn the system off and disconnect AC power before clearing CMOS according to the manual.
  2. Use one memory module, seated in the recommended slot, and leave XMP disabled.
  3. Use the primary PCIe slot and a basic display connection; disconnect unnecessary drives and USB devices.
  4. Confirm the 24-pin motherboard and 8-pin CPU power connectors are fully seated.
  5. Read the Dr. Debug display and consult the manual’s diagnostic guidance.
  6. Check that the exact CPU is supported by the installed BIOS. If it is not, use a CPU supported by that BIOS or have the seller update it.
  7. Once the system boots reliably at default settings, reconnect storage and peripherals, then test XMP separately.

A failed memory profile can prevent startup; clearing CMOS returns settings to defaults. Do not interrupt a firmware update in progress.

Keep it, buy it, or move to a newer platform?

Keep or buy the K6 when

  • You already own a compatible 8th- or 9th-generation CPU and DDR4, and want a tested board at a suitably low used price.
  • You need its combination of SATA ports, two M.2 sockets, dual LAN, multiple PCIe slots or CPU and memory overclocking.
  • You can establish that the board boots and its BIOS supports the intended processor.

Look elsewhere when

  • You are starting a new PC build, or the board and CPU cost approaches a newer platform’s combined price.
  • You need DDR5, PCIe 4.0/5.0, USB4, integrated Wi-Fi 6/7, faster-than-Gigabit Ethernet or a current CPU upgrade path.
  • The seller cannot verify BIOS version or POST, or you need compatibility with a 6th- or 7th-generation LGA1151 CPU.

Alternatives by use case

Option Best fit Trade-off
Z390 motherboard Keeping an 8th- or 9th-generation CPU while potentially avoiding some Z370 BIOS uncertainty or gaining board-specific features Still an aging LGA1151 platform; a newer chipset alone does not justify a large premium.
H370, B360 or B365 board A lower-cost system with a non-overclocked CPU and simpler expansion needs Not the choice for CPU overclocking; I/O and slot provision vary by board.
Current Intel or AMD platform A new build needing current CPU support, connectivity and storage features Usually means replacing the CPU and motherboard, and often the memory as well.

If the K6 is already owned and working, a compatible CPU or storage upgrade may be more economical than replacing the system. If you must buy the motherboard, CPU, memory and cooler together, compare the complete cost with a current platform rather than judging the board alone.
