Verdict: MSI’s NX7800GTX was an excellent high-end graphics card in 2005. It delivered reference-class GeForce 7800 GTX performance, relatively quiet single-slot cooling and useful video-input/output accessories. Its distinction was MSI’s bundle, connectivity, pricing and availability—not a unique GPU design or a major factory overclock. Today it makes sense for a period-correct Windows XP build, benchmarking or collecting, not modern gaming.
Which MSI 7800 GTX is this?
MSI sold the card mainly as the NX7800GTX, commonly listed as NX7800GTX-VT2D256E. Regional packaging may use names such as NX7800GTX-VTD256E. These generally identify the same 256 MB GeForce 7800 GTX class; verify the label and PCB when buying a loose card.
The standard retail board should not be confused with the GeForce 7800 GT, the later 7800 GTX 512 MB, the 7900 GTX, the mobile GeForce Go 7800 GTX or a modern MSI product carrying a GTX suffix. “MSI NX7800GTX SLI” means two cards operating together, not a different GPU.

What MSI changed—and what it did not
Reference hardware
Contemporary inspection found MSI’s PCB and clocks effectively identical to NVIDIA’s reference card. At 430 MHz core and 1.2 GHz effective memory, it performed like any other reference-clocked 7800 GTX. MSI therefore sold the platform rather than a substantially redesigned GPU.
Cooling and acoustics
The single-slot cooler was a genuine practical advantage over bulkier high-end designs of the period. Reviewers generally described it as manageable and relatively quiet while retaining space for neighboring expansion slots. A surviving card is a different proposition: inspect the fan, remove dust and consider new thermal paste or a replacement cooler before extended 3D use.
Connectivity and bundle
MSI’s retail package typically included dual DVI, DVI-to-analog adapters, a multimedia dongle for video input/output and component or HDTV output capability. The full package included The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay; the Lite edition omitted the game. Utilities such as Live Update appeared in period bundle listings, but contents varied by market. A second-hand card may lack the dongle, adapters, software, manuals or box.

How fast was it in 2005?
The 7800 GTX was NVIDIA’s flagship desktop GPU and represented a new single-card performance tier. Period tests using 3DMark 2003/2005, Doom 3, Far Cry, Half-Life 2 and Battlefield 2 found a clear advantage over GeForce 6800 Ultra and ATI X800-class competition, especially at high resolutions with antialiasing (AA) and anisotropic filtering (AF). The contemporary results are documented by Digital Trends and HotHardware.
Why resolution mattered
At 1024×768 with image-quality options reduced, the processor could become the limiting factor. Techgage observed CPU limitation even with an Athlon 64 4000+ in some Half-Life 2 testing. High-resolution, high-quality settings better represented the GTX’s intended workload because they shifted more of the work to the GPU.
SLI results
Two NX7800GTX cards produced substantial gains in many benchmarks, but not a universal doubling. Scaling depended on driver profiles, game support, resolution, AA/AF settings and CPU headroom; CPU-bound cases such as Half-Life 2 and Far Cry showed little benefit in HotHardware’s testing. SLI also added heat, power use, cost and troubleshooting. It required an SLI-capable motherboard, two compatible cards, bridge or board support, adequate power and software support.

Price, power and platform requirements
Historical prices varied by date and region:

| Later U.S. retail example | Approximately $479 |
| GameStar European listing | Approximately €530 |
| PC Watch Japanese street price | Approximately ¥68,000 |

Launch reports cited roughly 100–110 W for the card and a 330 W system power-supply recommendation. The 330 W figure is a period system guideline, not card consumption or a modern sizing rule. For a restoration, verify the PSU’s condition, rails and required PCIe connector rather than choosing solely by that number. The card itself is PCI Express; an AGP motherboard cannot use it as a normal drop-in upgrade.

Is 256 MB enough?
For the 2005 games and resolutions tested, 256 MB was normal for a flagship and generally adequate. By current standards it is severely restrictive. Modern texture budgets, operating systems, APIs and game engines exceed the card’s design target, and the 7800 GTX has no modern graphics-API path that makes it a sensible current gaming solution.

Buying or restoring one today
Buy for historical authenticity, not advertised rarity. Before paying, check:
- Exact MSI model, PCB and PCI Express interface.
- Fan startup, bearing noise and signs of overheating.
- Corrosion, damaged capacitors, cracked connectors or previous solder repair.
- Successful boot and 3D-load testing in a compatible system, not merely desktop video output.
- Whether the VIVO/HDTV dongle and DVI adapters are included if those functions matter.
- Period driver availability for the intended Windows XP or early Vista installation.
- Box, manuals and game bundle separately if collection completeness is important.
Video input may not work without the proprietary dongle. BIOS behavior can also vary on newer PCIe motherboards, so a known-compatible period platform is preferable for archival use.
2005 verdict versus 2026 usefulness
| Question | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Gaming value at launch | Excellent flagship performance, particularly with AA/AF at high resolution |
| MSI hardware advantage | Mostly reference design; value came from cooling, I/O, bundle and availability |
| Noise and slot space | Strong for its era thanks to the relatively quiet single-slot cooler |
| SLI appeal | High enthusiast interest, but inconsistent scaling and substantial cost |
| Modern gaming value | Not practical because of 256 MB VRAM and obsolete APIs |
| Retro/collectible value | Good when tested, complete and matched to a period-correct system |
MSI’s GeForce 7800 GTX was worthwhile when new because it made demanding 2005 games playable at settings that exposed the limits of previous single-GPU cards. Its modern value is narrower: a well-preserved, tested example can anchor an authentic XP-era build or collection, while an untested bare board is a restoration project rather than a general-purpose graphics upgrade.
