How does exploration work in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey?
Exploration is a mix of guided objectives and self-directed wandering. Main missions and story side quests give you clear goals, while the open world invites you to investigate beyond them. The map helps with orientation, but it is not a complete checklist of everything worth seeing: Ubisoft’s starter guide says that not every interesting spot or hidden treasure is marked with a question mark.
That makes it useful to treat map icons as leads rather than boundaries. Ubisoft recommends exploring off the beaten path on Kephallonia, the starting island. The guide also describes Orichalcum as a resource you may find while exploring and later exchange with a vendor for epic or legendary gear; it does not promise that every unmarked location contains a particular reward.
Are all locations marked on the map?
No. Some points of interest and hidden treasures are unmarked, according to Ubisoft’s starter guide. Follow quest prompts when you want a structured route, but look around the surrounding landscape instead of assuming that every worthwhile discovery has a question-mark icon.

How do choices affect quests and characters?
Dialogue lets you choose how to approach conversations, from compassionate to forceful, and decisions can affect relationships, alliances, and later events. Ubisoft describes these choices as having consequences beyond the immediate exchange. That gives quests a role-playing dimension: you can make decisions about how to handle a situation rather than simply follow one fixed dialogue path.
Ubisoft’s current game overview describes over 30 hours of choice dialogue and multiple endings. These are Ubisoft’s feature claims; the dialogue-hours figure is not a measure of total campaign length.

What does the ship add to exploration?
The sea is a major part of the setting, not just scenery between land locations. Ubisoft says naval exploration is important to the journey and describes a ship that can be customized and upgraded. You can also recruit crew members, whose perks support the ship.
At sea, exploration can lead to naval encounters. Ubisoft describes maneuvering around enemy ships, boarding and defeating their remaining crew for loot, or destroying a ship for resources; larger ships yield larger rewards. On land, exploration centers on locations, quests, and battles, while sea travel adds ship upgrades, crew choices, and naval combat. Ubisoft does not specify a fixed share of playtime for either activity.

Can you explore Ancient Greece without combat?
Yes. Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece is a separate, conflict-free mode for exploring the game’s world. Ubisoft presents it as an educational tool for teachers that anyone can use. You can follow guided tours or explore Discovery Sites at your own pace, with first-person view, Photo Mode, and exhibits about the game’s production also described in Ubisoft’s feature article.
Ubisoft’s feature article describes hundreds of Discovery Sites. A separate Ubisoft 2019 announcement counted 300 tour stations. These are Ubisoft’s descriptions of the mode, not an independent assessment of historical accuracy.
That feature article said the mode was a free update for owners of the game on PS4, Xbox One, or PC, and was also available as a standalone PC purchase at the time. That historical availability statement does not establish today’s platform support, price, or standalone status. Check the official store for your platform before purchasing or downloading.

It was designed to let players make narrative quests using six objective types, branching dialogue and paths, and cross-platform sharing of player-created quests. These details describe the announced feature; its current access and support status are not established here, so do not assume the tool still works.

Is exploration mostly guided or open-ended?
It supports both. Missions and side quests provide structure, while unmarked discoveries reward curiosity. The ship extends that freedom across the sea, and Discovery Tour offers a combat-free way to visit the setting. If you prefer a fixed route, follow objectives; if you enjoy looking beyond them, the map does not show everything Ubisoft says is worth finding.
