Nintendo Switch 2: a hybrid console with Nintendo games
Nintendo’s official specifications list a 7.9-inch LCD with a 1920×1080 resolution, wide color gamut, HDR10, and variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz. The system has 256 GB of UFS storage, Wi-Fi 6, and a custom NVIDIA processor. In handheld and tabletop mode, its maximum resolution is 1920×1080; when docked, TV output supports up to 3840×2160 at 60 fps. Battery life depends on the game
Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours of battery life. The company cautions that “Battery life will depend on the games you play and usage conditions.” Treat that range as an official estimate, not a guaranteed runtime or a result from independent testing.

Use the right storage card
Switch 2 storage expansion requires a compatible microSD Express card. Nintendo says ordinary microSD cards can only be used to copy screenshots and videos from the console; they are not a substitute for a compatible expansion card for game storage.
ASUS ROG Ally X: a Windows gaming handheld
ASUS identifies the ROG Ally X as a 2024 model. Its published specifications include Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, AMD Radeon RDNA 3 graphics, and a 7-inch FHD (1920×1080) IPS-level touchscreen with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Because it runs Windows, the Ally X is a portable PC gaming device rather than a dedicated console. Check whether the games and services you care about work the way you expect on a handheld PC, and whether you are comfortable with its operating system and setup. The available specifications alone cannot establish how it compares with another handheld in real-world game performance, comfort, or battery life.

Portal is a different proposition from a Switch or PC handheld: it is a PS5 remote-play device. Consider it if you already own a PS5 and want to play remotely; do not compare it as though it independently runs the same kind of game library as a standalone console. How to choose without a universal ranking
- Choose the game library first. Identify the specific games you want, then confirm their platform and handheld compatibility.
- Decide whether games must run locally. For standalone play, focus on dedicated consoles and PC handhelds. For PS5 remote play, Portal is a separate category.
- Match the device to your play setting. If you want one system for portable and TV play, Switch 2 is designed for both. If PC gaming is the priority, compare PC handhelds rather than assuming a console-style experience.
- Check battery and storage needs. Battery life varies with workload. For Switch 2 expansion, verify the card is microSD Express before buying.
- Verify local availability and the exact model. Prices, stock, bundles, and regional configurations change. Confirm them with the retailer and manufacturer for your market before purchasing.
What “best handheld of 2024” means now
The title’s year can mean either a retrospective look at devices available in 2024 or a buying guide for today.
