Its seasons and weather can make infiltration feel responsive to the environment. The reservation is that the larger story and some repeated activities have drawn criticism. The game’s current narrative also includes a free final story update announced in June 2026, so launch-era reviews do not describe its complete story state.
Is Assassin’s Creed Shadows worth playing?
For players drawn to historical open worlds, stealth, and action combat, Shadows has a strong central appeal: its setting is more than scenery, and its protagonists encourage different approaches to missions. But that strength does not guarantee an equally compelling main plot or a consistently fresh activity loop.

GamesRadar+ praised the scenery, combat, and dual-protagonist design in its PS5 review, while criticizing the story’s scattered structure and conclusion, as well as Knowledge activities that can become repetitive. Those are that outlet’s assessments, not a universal verdict. Windows Central’s Xbox Series X review was strongly positive overall, though its reviewer also reported glitches and several crashes in that experience. Neither account establishes how the game performs on every platform.

Naoe: stealth and mobility
Naoe is the shinobi protagonist and the more stealth-oriented choice. Ubisoft presents her as suited to sneaking and agile approaches, making her the natural fit for players who want to avoid direct confrontation where possible.

How do the seasons and weather affect play?
The world’s changing seasons and dynamic weather can alter stealth conditions, not just the landscape. Ubisoft’s technical feature gives concrete examples: a frozen pond removes the underwater cover it offers in warmer conditions, while rain at night can muffle footsteps and make enemies less likely to spot the player. These details give environmental changes practical consequences during infiltration, though they do not by themselves resolve the broader criticism that some activities repeat.

What has changed since launch?
Ubisoft announced a final update on June 16, 2026, adding a new story arc and the Domains feature for free. That means the current game includes narrative material beyond what was available to reviewers at launch. The announcement does not establish that the update changes every criticism of the original story or activity structure, so it is best treated as additional post-launch content rather than proof that all earlier concerns have been addressed.

It also lists the game as available through Ubisoft+. Store and subscription availability can vary by region, so check the live listing for your country and platform before buying.
Ubisoft’s US store listing gives March 20, 2025 as the release date and names Ubisoft Quebec as developer. For the PC version sold through Ubisoft Store, the listing says a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect are required.
